Star 101.3-Your Happy Place

Radio billboards should never regurgitate the station's slogan, unless it's a truly powerful statement.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Why have an on-the-air slogan, then? If the billboard says something you NEVER say on the air, you're confusing people.

Because the more things you can CLAIM, the better. So just use a different slogan in different places and get everyone listening to your station. Duh.

</ sarcasm>

I completely agree that using a slogan on a billboard only is a stupid, wasteful campaign. There is no advantage in taking no advantage of slogan reinforcement between media. Duh, yourself.

I believe..."Go to your Happy Place" is also printed on Prozac Bottles.

Or was that? "Sit on a happy...." Oh never mind.

KIOI Total Stereo Radio. Forever!

Gabbert was an innovator who knew that if the product was good, that the audience would follow. That's why he likes working at KGO.

You mean, it's not because he needs the money?

I was meaning to salute the man, not just the station. I am hard-pressed to think of a single individual who has guided one station to success to the degree did in his time.

Oh, okay. You were talking about KIOI, so I began talking about other unique stations, including ones that continue to be unique today.

I guess the names of individuals who are single-handedly associated with a successful radio station elude me at the moment. Many of the station you list have, indeed, been some of the best in Bay Area radio history, but give me the name of one big fella at each that towered above all else at his station.

Well....Pat Henry at KJAZ (the first all-jazz station), Knox LaRue at KSTN (one of the first Top 40 stations and later one of the first Drake stations -- and on the FM side, one of the very first to go to a Spanish language contemporary music format), Ed Davis at KDFC (one of the longest-running commercial classical stations in the country). And, let's see...I guess we should include Lew Hill, founder of KPFA. And then there's Lorenzo Milam, who brought non-comm radio into the communities they serve with such stations as KTAO, KPOO (and outside the market KRAB, KPOO, KDNA, etc.), and Jeremy Lansman with KFAT. Oh, and let's not forget Richard Eaton whose United Stations specialized in programming aimed at black and Latin audiences (KVEZ and KSOL 107.7, KALI, etc), and Sherwood Patterson, whose KSAN 1450 was the early leader in R&B programming. Then maybe we should honor Clinton Churchill who owned KYA during its early glory days.

But indeed, for programming, engineering, marketing, and chutzpah combined, there is no equal to James Gabbert. None.

Indeed agreed. I know this is a radio board, but consider his ownership of TV20. To revise an old cliche: with KOFY-TV, Gabbert managed to make lemonade from rotting lemon rinds.

Been thinking of "Your Happy Place". 2 things keep popping in my thoughts.

1) The movie, "Happy Gilmore". In order to focus on his golf game, he was advised to go to his 'Happy Place'

2) McDonalds. That's right Mickey Dee's. Anyone remember their old theme song a long time ago? McDonalds is your kind of place, a
clean and snappy place, a hap hap happy place....

K101 had a lot of baggage that needed to be dropped. So, when they made the change to Star it was for a good reason. Gary S was indeed the PD when that happened...but, he certainly had no more control than the average PD in a large market. And don't think for a minute the change was made at his behest...Michael Martin had his fingers all over that.

I think the main reason that Star has never settled on a true identity is because that station has been researched to death. They'd change the music frequently based on auditorium music tests.

Switching to 'MY FM?'. I saw a billboard today on 101 south. It was Star 101.3. Had pictures of three current performers, with the slogan...My Music. HHHhhhmmmmm My music, MY FM Coming soon

"My Music. HHHhhhmmmmm My music, MY FM Coming soon"

So let me understand - they're changing imaging in stages? Is that like how they're going to make KOIT into "Fresh 96-5?" A carefully choreographed image makeover. First, you say "Fresh" or "My" occasionally so people get used to the new word, then you spring the entire slogan on them a few months later?

Isn't "My" an exclusive News Corporation trademark for "My Network TV?" Won't Rupert Murdoch get angry and have Fox News do an expose on Clear Channel...or worse, have them exposed as liberals?

Is "Your TV20" the opposite?

Star 101.3 has always thrown everything together. They do not seem to have a master game plan. But CC has been chaning images at other stations. LA's, KBIG became 104.3 MY FM. Sacramento's Y92.5 became MY 92.5. All owned by Clear Channel. I believe the possibliites are there. They will do it if they believe they can make one more dollar. This is no April Fools either. I got that out of my system earlier today.

In which I did not like - Y92.5 flipping. It was a good sounding station except for Delilah which didn't really fit the format.
