"I have no objection to the MD being on the air. In fact used to be that a DJ would add MD to his/her duties. The point of my post and others was that doing an air shift has almost become an after thought..a small irritant in a person duty statement."
You're right - even before radio de-regulation, MDs and even PDs often pulled on-air shifts. And from what I understand, using voice-tracking technology, a 4 hour VTed show with DJ content - some back announcing of songs, entertainment news or gossip, etc. is less than one hour's work. The fact that Star 101.3 doesn't even do that isn't a testament to Clear Channel's cheapness, in my opinion - it's a testament to the fact that they just don't care. Or perhaps they believe that DJs actually detract from the content, and cause tune-out. For all I know, they have research to back it up.
What bugs me is - why bother to pretend to have a DJ when he only cuts in maybe once or twice a hour for ten seconds each? Those recorded Jack-FM cut-ins take up more air time than Darren McPeake.
So why not stop pretending, call it "More Music for the Drive Home" or something, and run jock-less?
