Star 1013 Afternoons?

A

Forgive me if this was brought up before. Does anyone know if Star 1013 is live for afternoon drive? It just seems like you never hear interaction with the traffic reporter. And you never hear any sort of mistake....If it is tracked is there a board op.?

You mean the Darren Mc Peake afternoon "show?" Last time I listened for awhile, he opened the mic probably 3 times in the entire hour. It's got to be tracked, or it's the most serious waste of a live jock in the Bay Area. Darren is apparently the Music Director, and I'm sure he's a busy guy, but that entire show can't possibly take more than a few minutes out of his busy day.

Isn't there something wrong with this picture? Doing an afternoon drive show on a major station in the #4 market is an interruption to the Mds busy life.

Last time i checked his show was doing pretty darn well.

"Last time i checked his show was doing pretty darn well."

That may be, but it's not doing well because of the content..beyond the music, of course.

If Darren's show is doing well, it may prove that the suits are right, and jocks mean almost nothing these days in regard to how popular a show is. I say this because the show isn't even voice-tracked well. There's no reason a station can't do a VTed show with content, but Star doesn't bother.

Maybe this proves that Clear Channel is making the right moves by cutting staff so deeply and voice-tracking so much. I believe Don Bleu and Sylvia Chacon are the only live shows on the station, which means the station is either tracked or automated for two-thirds of the program day.

I would think afternoon drive is too important to just run voicetracked. I think it would be pretty embarrassing if the wrong traffic reporter were introduced...

Ideally, I agree - afternoon drive shouldn't be tracked. As for introducing the wrong traffic reporter - that happens frequently on live radio, not to mention the live traffic reporters themselves who give their wrong name (since they sometimes go by different names on different stations), and also occasionally ID the wrong station. Besides, they can get around that in voice tracking by just saying "Now here's Star 101.3 Traffic."

Call me out of touch, but I'd just be happy if these stations would provide a little DJ content - live or tracked. But there's less interest than ever in doing so these days.

I've been streaming some different stations out of the SF market and I can't help but shake my head and wonder what happened?

Even St John on Wild 94.9(who at one point was one of the best CHR jocks hands down) was doing some pretty straight forward "That was, this is, coming up" breaks....what happened to entertaining the listener?

St. John is now VT on LA's MY 104.3 FM. That show is on at the same time as he is on WiLD 94.9.

Yeah and that show is also blah...I know he use to be Productions Director...does he do any part of his shift live?

Welcome to the state of radio today. Jayn who does Middays on Alice is also the MD. She was hired as MD, and they ultimately got rid of their midday jock, putting her in that place and saving a salary and benefits package. Such a shame!

I just had Star 101.3 on in the car for about a half-hour...about as long as I could stand. This was through about 6 songs, and a long stop set. At no point was there a single peep out of Darren McPeake...voice-tracked or otherwise. Not to mention the music -nothing but those easy rock ballads that are the staple of the station. James Blunt's "You're Beautiful," etc.

In my opinion, a truly crappy radio station.

I have no objection to the MD being on the air. In fact used to be that a DJ would add MD to his/her duties. The point of my post and others was that doing an air shift has almost become an after thought..a small irritant in a person duty statement.

This attitude is one of the differences between the launches and success levels of WCBS and KFRC. With WCBS the Air Personalities were and important part of the whole package and there almost from day one. With KFRC it was something they eventually got around to.

You're right - even before radio de-regulation, MDs and even PDs often pulled on-air shifts. And from what I understand, using voice-tracking technology, a 4 hour VTed show with DJ content - some back announcing of songs, entertainment news or gossip, etc. is less than one hour's work. The fact that Star 101.3 doesn't even do that isn't a testament to Clear Channel's cheapness, in my opinion - it's a testament to the fact that they just don't care. Or perhaps they believe that DJs actually detract from the content, and cause tune-out. For all I know, they have research to back it up.

What bugs me is - why bother to pretend to have a DJ when he only cuts in maybe once or twice a hour for ten seconds each? Those recorded Jack-FM cut-ins take up more air time than Darren McPeake.

So why not stop pretending, call it "More Music for the Drive Home" or something, and run jock-less?

If you all wait a week or so, you won't have Mr. McPeake to kick around anymore. Another victim of CC Clear Cutting.

I don't think anyone was picking on him... It was more about Clear Channel. I think we all know that music directors have very little influence these days...
