Star 93.7

How did Star begin its format? Stunt? Outright flip with barely any announcement? I've found that it started on April 1, but don't know a time.

They did play 1999 for a time then launched the new format (IIRC) with the Gap Band's "You Dropped the Bomb On Me" right after the lyric "Mommy? Why does everybody have a bomb?"

Wednesday night March 31, 1999 at 10pm Eagle played "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Then "1999" began playing until 3pm the next day, Thursday April 1st. You Dropped A Bomb on Me was the first song, then Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan, Cher, and the Bee Gees.

It launched jockless.

I wish they had this station, or even change 97.7 to "Funkytown" with the addition of "Steve Harvey Morning Show" and "Doug Banks Show" and go up against "Amp 103.3", see which one wins, and stays longer

It had a particular format of playing an even balance of dance, oldies, and older Adult R&B back in the beginning. Then much to their surprise, their audience turned out to be much younger than originally intended.

can anyone tell me what lead to the downfall of this station?? i remember turning it on and hearing mike 93.7 and wondered what happened. I would like this to be 96.9's new format or something like it.

Two reasons for the downfall of Star 93.7:

1. Lack of musical direction - throughout the station's life, the actual format varied from Jammin' Oldies to contemporary dance to hot AC. There was also a poorly-planned trek into Christmas music one year. Every six-months, the station would seem to have a new angle on what it was doing. It was like the WBOS of rhythm.

2. The adult hits phenomenon - If Entercom didn't take the plunge, CBS was about to the next day. That's why a quick announcement by a startled Fast Freddy led to the launch of Mike FM.

Does anyone think a station like this could survive in todays radio??
