Star 94 Rebrands, Replaces Airstaff

WSTR-FM will be rebranding as, "Star 94, the Station of the Stars." The music will consist of popular songs from movies of the past 25 years. Some examples are "Purple Rain" by Prince, "Superfly" by Curtis Mayfield, "Happy" by Pharrell Williams and "Independent Women" by Destiny's Child. The station has contracted with several movies stars to handle the air shifts.

The new lineup is:

6-10AM - Will Smith With the Hits
10AM-3PM - Liam Neeson
3-7PM - Brad Pitt
7PM-Midnight - Scarlett Johansson

"The Star 94 name has a lot of equity in this market, and it's time we took advantage of that,"commented Brand Manager Jerry McKenna. "Our ratings are going to be as high as the North Star."

The new format is kicking off with a contest to win a trip to Hollywood. The grand prize winner will also get to have dinner and drinks with the director of the Griffith Observatory. Other prizes include telescopes and free downloads of the GoSkyWatch app.

Star 94 also will be giving away money from the Big Dipper Cash Vault. SVP & Market Manager Rick Caffey added, "We had so much success with the V-103 Free Money Kitty, and reaching into the Big Dipper will be a great way to enhance the station's star-studded image."

The new format will start today, April 1.

A different Will Smith I would guess….
Why don’t they bring on the HD2 format with DJ’s …a 70’s 80’s 90’s station, I think, would do well.

No, one and the same. That was supposed to be a joke, i.e. Will Smith With the Hits. Get it?

On the serious side, that's what Star HD2 does now although without jocks.

Probably the FIRST April Fool's joke to ever 'fool' me in my 73 years....But, once I saw who had the 6-10AM shift, I KNEW what it was.
A Good One!

WSTR seems to be finding their groove more as time goes on. I agree they have been sounding pretty good. While they kind of fill part of a format hole (classic hits), that leaves this market's legacy format hole - soft rock - waiting for a filler.

I wouldn't describe Star as Classic Hits. They play both old and current product, and it's all rhythmic. Star HD2 is Classic Hits.

Yes, Classic Hits remains a hole in the market though the 102.1 translator plays a somewhat rock-oriented version of Classic Hits. Soft AC works only in some markets because of its older skew. Audacy, Star 94's owner, recently blew up their Soft AC station in Philadelphia.

Hold on, Audacy owns the behemoth B101 in Philly, whereas iHeart owned the late 106.1 the Breeze.

But yes, Soft AC can work only if the demographics of the market are favorable. See San Francisco, Miami, Chicago.

You are correct. It's iHeart that owns 106.1.

B101 was a behemoth under Jerry Lee, not so much under Audacy.

That is because Jerry Lee ran a radio station, and Audacy just sells spots.

B101’s effort has slipped since Audacy took over, but they’re still massively successful and one of if not the most successful AC’s in the country. Much of that is likely riding on the coattails of decades and decades of the ownership of Jerry Lee that created a ton of listener loyalty and built the station’s brand in to what it is. However, I’m sure Audacy will fumble it over time like they are with Power and Lite in Miami.

Lite is the #2 billing AC in Miami, after WAMR and well ahead of WFEZ. WPOW is in about a 5-way tie for 4th in billing. They are also Audacy's 31 and #2 billers in the market.

I can give Lite that, but that surprises me about Power 96. It was a very fun rhythmic CHR that sounded like the area, but it’s essentially been neutered and doesn’t “sound” like Miami at all anymore. It sounds like what you can get from Audacy across the country. Of course the decline started under CBS who struggled succeeding with a lot of CHR’s.
