Star 94

Nope. And they won't. Personality-driven radio is almost dead, and Star has been floundering for 15 years now so they'll never catch up.

Or perhaps the new programming leadership is simply getting the music right first (which seems to be helping in the ratings) before rebuilding its lineup.
Hopefully that's the case. The change in the music happened before Emily Boldon was brought in. And the jocks who were let go were top notch as was the PD.

Ratings are up slightly since the music change and consistent since then. So the station could be thinking one of 2 ways: 1) Our ratings are as high without jocks so why spend the money?, or 2) The new music mix is increasing the ratings. Just think how much they would go up if we added jocks.

Time will tell.

Reminds me of the NEW 97.1 The River every time they tried to add a morning show.

MrRadio, have faith! Kevin and Taylor, from the Fish in Atlanta are going to do mornings at Star starting September 15. I'd like to think Star will go more AC route because of this because not sure how their music will match these two new personalities.

This gives me hope indeed. I hope 94 will go more AC/80s/90s. Maybe satisfy some of us that are looking for pop hits and not just classic rock.

From the AJC article they appear to adding midday and pm drive hosts in the near future.
And hopefully they will be live and local.

Emily Boldon, the PD, has been doing mornings this week. Perhaps having her do a shift, even if voice-tracked, would be a way to get someone in middays and save some money. After listening to her, I conclude that her talent must lie in the programming area. Even so, she would be far better than the automated music they’ve been running.

I'd like for them to add a music identity.

This is so true! Funny how, for DECADES Star has ALWAYS ended up in some sort of identity crisis, no matter what they call themselves. All the years they reported as a Top 40/CHR, they wobbled between CHR, Adult CHR and Hot AC. Next, and for a very short time they went full CHR. Then they shifted back to Adult CHR. Then, it seems they finally went full on Hot AC (and even identified as such).

Finally, they decided on Rhythmic-AC. But, IMHO, they played way too much urban/hip-hop. What's worse (and even tho they called themselves "The RHYTHM of Atlanta") they only played the original... "rock-ish" versions of P!nk, Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5. Even to this day, they still identify as Rhythmic-AC, still play quite a bit of hip-hop (which I get) but now, they've recently added even more Hot-AC songs by Jonas Brothers, Shawn Mendez and Ed Sheeran (non-dance versions of course). So now we have a Rhythmic-AC/HotAC/Old skool hip-hop/AC mess! o_O

So yeah. For people like me that have been here for more than 20 years.... Star94's multiple identity crises are more expected than laughable at this point. There again, Atlanta will always be the strangest major radio market I've ever lived in.

I think if you look at the streaming behavior of most people, you'll also see a lack of consistent identity. The game for a radio station today is to provide the right mix (there's that word) of genres and tempos to keep people listening. If a station gets too consistent in either of those areas, it stands the risk of becoming stale or boring. You also don't want the branding to alienate anyone. The great thing about KTWV (which may be the template for Star) is that it's able to bridge genres and tempos. If they can do that in Atlanta, they have potential for being a Top 5 station.

Radio Insight reporting that Brian Moote will join for afternoons.RadioInsight
That is a GREAT move. He is very talented.

What I’m still not getting is why they dismissed Skye Smith (now at B98.5) and Kannon, both excellent jocks; and Jerry McKenna, who was doing a very effective job as PD. Perhaps they had to get down to a budget figure mandated by Audacy and then were able to justify some spending. Who knows?

I hope they at least voice-track middays instead of being just a jukebox. That said, the music and formatics now sound terrific.

The most consistent non Urban Music station in Atlanta is 97.1. Last time I checked, they had less than 500 songs in their playlist. This "job" is on air. Form past experiences, unfortunately what a lot of folks on this board consider stale wins ratings. Streaming is an after thought*. I am not sure exactly what format it really is. Last time I listened (September), they were a lot less rhythmic than July.

The actual "name" of the format is not be as important as their ranking in the money demos.

*I am not discounting streaming revenue, but I believe most people stream OTA radio stations because of some kind of tie to that market. I have never heard of someone on an OTA radio station getting fired because of bad streaming numbers. The local ratings is what has gotten folks fired in the past.
