Star 94's Big 90's Weekend

Now we have both the Big 80's Weekend on B98.5 and the Big 90's Weekend on Star 94. I'd been hoping Star 94 would get a little more adventurous with its music, and I'm looking forward to listening this weekend.

I thought this was a little more predictable than adventurous but I know what you're saying. I'm surprised it took them this long to pull the trigger. But better late than never.

Finally..............somebody in town willing to try something new. People have been
suggesting this for at least 5 years!!! Look out B-98 and Caller10, this is probably
gonna work.

Flip the calendar back about 15 years, and B98.5 was doing all-70s weekends (or Friday nights, or Saturday nights, etc.) and Star 94 all-80s. Time marches on.

Star did Friday Night 80's from around 1999-2004 or so, but I don't recall them doing all-80's weekends.

90s music is red hot right now. This will work, and work well.

IIRC, they were doing Friday Night 80s as far back as 1992-1993, and possibly Saturday nights too. You are correct--they did not do all-decade weekends like B98.5.

I wish they played more of it during the week.

Not a bad concept weekend. I am noticing some songs they've played which (if I'm not mistaken), Star 94 didn't play during the 90's on a regular basis. Those songs include Better Than Ezra "Good", Imani Coppola "Legend of a Cowgirl", & Jamiroquai "Virtual Insanity". Maybe Star should consider a special weekend once a month (80's, movie songs, SB halftime artist songs, etc).

On a related note, Rock 100.5 had an all-80s weekend last weekend, but it hasn't returned for this weekend...

At first I liked the idea, but the thing about 90s pop/alternative music is that it's already being replayed everywhere (especially Dave-FM and 99X)

Just seems like most of the songs they're playing have already been played to death

This is a topic where the opinion of this board means less than nothing. It's targeted at Women 35-55 and I'm fairly certain we don't have enough here to even come close to a scientific sample.

The people who love Star and pull for it will dig this and those who hate anything not current based will dislike it.

And the shout out to last weekend's Rock 100.5 80's weekend...I am certain the playlists between these B and Rock are 100 percent different. But the concept is the same.

It's also my original point. This is a long way from original programming. It's Star going back to tried and true methods instead of being some weird CHR/Hot AC hybrid. And they will have some success in that.

Wouldn't one of the best 90's songs every 1 or 2 hours during regular programming help Star 94 stand out? I realize they already do this but with the same several songs.

Star came in 6th 18-34, and 15th 25-55, so not sure why they're targeting the older demo with this 90s weekend (if that's what they're doing)

Many people in the business know that the songs of one's teenage years will forever resonate with them. A 34YO was 14 in 1990, and 23 in 1999. An all-90s weekend would be received favorably by 22-34YOs, most of the former demo you mention.

Similarly, that's why B98.5 keeps hammering the 80s, and why Rock 100.5 gave it a whirl, as both of those stations have older target demos.

The problem with the younger demo focus on 90's is they are still more interested in today's music. 35-40 is when people generally decide "all new music is crap." The younger demos will tune in...and get sick of the second time they hear "Groove Is In The Heart."

Also, this is worth checking tomorrow but looks like some of these 90's songs have gotten 5-7 spins already this weekend on Star. Tub Thumbing, Unbelievable and a lot more according to Yes.com.

I think that would be great. I'm 24 and a lot of 90's music is "nostalgic" for me and other people my age as well. Yeah, 99x and Dave FM have been mixing in 90's rock/alternative, but nobody is playing 90's pop which could be a way for Star to stand out. Maybe they are testing out songs this weekend to add to the playlist?

Wait...a 22-year-old was 1 year old in 1990 and 9 years old in '99 - but yeah I'm assuming they're targeting people in their 30s, especially with a tagline like "Your Life Your Music"

And whoever posted that they might be testing out 90s songs for their playlist, I wouldn't be surprised if that's true (actually seems like a good idea)

They should do a 2000s weekend sometime soon, and test out a lot of those songs too IMO

You don't test music by playing it on the air. You think DJ's write down responses from the request lines? Come on guys. DJ's don't take requests and actually play them either. Even when they say they do. It's all planned and approved in advance.
