Star 98.7 changes.....

Star 98.7 Changes To 'L.A. & Orange County's Modern Adult Station'

WOW! ANOTHER jockless slush station! Just what L.A. needs! THREE jockless rock juke boxes (counting Jack)!
Greggie baby is saving THOUSANDS in salaries every week by eliminating TWO stations' staffs!
The bean counters must be having an orga$m!

Not to mention that their processing sounds like $**T!

We are seeing less of an emphasis on personalities and more on the music. In most cases the jocks are button pushers who get to talk once in a while. A carefully imaged voiced over station probably sounds not much different than one with "live" jocks, at least to the average listener scanning the dial in his car.

Management realizes that Personality = $$$$$$ so it works for them. People like Rick Dees, Charlie Tuna, et al are a dying breed for now. Maybe that is why Seacrest works so hard for a TV career. I remember as a kid back in southwestern Ohio scanning the dial to hear my favorite jocks from all over, and at night getting The Wolfman on skip as well as Dick Biondi.

Oh the good old days (sigh)!

Expect both stations to have air staffs. MyFm should be populated by next week at the earliest.

Pretty sad isn't it?

If your reference includes Myfm, look for them to have jocks soon. The liners on 98-7 do suggest that they intend to go without personalities.

Wonder what happens the the "Star Lounge"? (I've been to the CCLA building a few times..it looks nice)
Looks like they may not need the jock lounge either.

Actually its official name is the Guitar Center Performance Studio. It's used by all the stations at the Pinnacle Building. The signage inside is removable and can be reconfigured for whichever station is using it at the time. It's cleverly done and you would never know that it's not permanent. I believe it's held on the walls with Velcro.

So they're keeping the Star name but just tweaking the format? I'm listening online and it sounds pretty much the same.

KYSR (98-7) most noteable change is the addition of quite a few modern rock 90's Gold titles - and some of them have an active rock harder edged sound. For example, I heard KORN, Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson overnight. You can go to yes.com and see their station logs.

What's interesting is that their currents haven't changed too much. They even played Pink during the 5AM hour as noted on yes.com.

Does Marilyn Manson, KORN, and Nine Inch Nails belong on a Modern AC/AAA "Adult" station? Are the additions of these artists a sign of more changes to come - or is it compatible to play these titles next to artists like Pink, Maroon 5, and The Fray?

Is all of this just a stunt - perhaps the PD is on vacation away from the rain and putting the automation system on shuffle.

They're also airing quite a bit of 2 sets of the same artists and they are playing quite a bit of Pearl Jam and other 90's modern rock core artists in heavy repetition.

I curious to hear everybody else's thoughts on my interpretations.

LARadio.com has just spilled the beans that Lisa Foxx will solo mornings on STAR beginning next week, and Valentine will shuffle over to helm the all new MY FM Morning Show. Everyone else (durning the week anyway) goes back to their original time slots.

Personally I think they're going about it half-a%$@d. If you're going to make these changes, blow it all up and start fresh, uh, no pun intended.
It's an odd mix of music to say the least, but not totally un-listenable. We'll see. From what I've been able to find out, the PD is not on vacation. She's right there, but like MyFM is not calling the shots.

I wanted to modify my last post, but I ran out of time, so here it is:

So, the only changes in weekday personnel are Valentine going to MY, and Charlie Tuna is off air? All the rest of them are on at their regular times? If this *is* stunting, then what kinds of music are these stations going to end up with? Maybe the whole thing is a stunt, and Charlie will be back on Monday.

IMO, the logo for MY is creepy. It looks like the letters were made with recycled Gumbys. (As in "How many Gumbies had to give up their lives just so....") And the colors, blue, yellow and orange, are making me queasy.

CC has its hands full. Really bad trend for WLTW, so they re-fixed what they had "fixed" which wasn't broken in the first place. What insanity will CC perpetrate next?

I thought it odd yesterday that although it appeared they changed direction and name, they continued to promote the Star website on air and didn't have a new one. Also noticed that Pink and other non rock artists were still being played next to the heavier music. Don's column does appear to confirm that it was all a stunt. Too bad. Although I love KROQ, I would especially love to have a great adult alternative leaning station...and Star just does not cut it. Bad presentation, bad music mix.

Stunting can generate listener interest and talk, but if they are not adjusting their direction toward men, then what was the point of yesterday's stunt?

they need to dump the currents, atleast the ones my plays, they need to drop
Nickelback
John Mayer
Daughtry
the fray

By the way, while I'm ranting, why in the heck would Star stunt with a heavy load of voicers making fun of and belittling jocks, with full intention of putting them back on the air, which they've announced they'll be doing on Monday?

Once in a while CC does something right....the switch to Myfm (logo aside) was done well. They flipped it low key in way that showcases the new music mix and it was done without a ton of clutter - which KBIG suffered from. The way they let Charlie graciously say goodbye was a classy touch.

But then, as happens most often with Clear Channel, they do something half way. If Star does evolve into something on track and focused, then I'll eat these words, otherwise It just suggests that often they still have their head up their.....

Hunter:

Yes, I noticed that with the exception of a few minor changes, the Star website is the same, and the things that went away could be very easily brought back.

It would have made more sense for CC to blow up KBIG and have a heavy rocker, if they were going for the 18 - 34 male demo, and left Star alone at this point.

I guess the only thing we can do is wait until Monday, and see what CC throws at us. If everyone is going back to work then, whatever is on air should be the real stuff.

Oh wait a minute! I just thought of something: tonight begins Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Maybe enough people wanted to start the weekend early/ have off tomorrow, that CC decided that a jockless stunt would accomodate both staff and publicity considerations.

Talk about things that make you go "Hmmmm." LOL!

I think the branding of the station simply as 98-7 and this change being in the middle of the week is a sign that this is just a stunt.

And...don't forget the music mix. It's definitely all over the place - who are they targeting? Has anybody noticed the changes that were made after 6AM? They were adding heavier artists like Nine Inch Nails, KORN, Alice in Chains, Toadies, etc.. and these artists seem to be absent after 6AM today. It's almost like Clear Channel reads these boards and is just messing with our heads inviting massive speculation until the real switch...perhaps later today or Monday???

Most of the Clear Channel format changes I have heard of changed formats on Fridays or Mondays and I just can't see the Clear Channel marketing team being content with a branding as simple as 98-7.

You bring up some good points, but I do feel that they did the right thing with 104.3 - given the need for AC to have a strong signal. Although Star was/is a hot AC, it is the one they should turn into a rocker.

I just think with three ACs, they'll have to keep Myfm a little softer which will cannibalize KOST.
