Question: At the time of this stunt, was Star 101 performing as badly in the ratings as Star 98.7 currently is? If I'm not mistaken, at least in terms of 12+ numbers, Star 98.7 is the lowest-rated (or one of the lowest-rated) full-signalled FM stations in the Los Angeles market. That's why Star 98.7's stunt seems to imply a format change...but of course, you never know.

FM TALK. Mancow is currently on CC's poorly rated sports station. Look for him to do mornings, Jamie middays (up against her former partners Frosty and Frank at KLSX) and Phil Hendrie afternoons (arch rival of Tom Leykis and also relegated to the lame sports station).

As for the Fresno Star, where are they today? Oh yeah, they changed format.

Star is part of Clear Channel's "wall of women" combo, thus what is important is how well Star does in that demo, 25-49, and how it performs in combination with KIIS, KHHT, KOST, and KBIG.

I don't know why anyone tries to base discussions on 12+ numbers anymore. They have no bearing on the realities of the business.<P ID="signature">______________

Very true K.M. - although they are way off in demo as well. This is a station that used to be among the top 5 women 18-34 and 25-54...
 
Am I allowed to make a post being a newbie and all? It might sound like a stupid question but I don't want to step on anyone's toes. :) I was directed here by a friend of mine, she said it might give me some answers as to what happened to Star.

Everyone is talking about a format change or format flip, I have one question regarding that change. Wouldn't it be wise for Star to tap into the Modern Rock format since we only have KROQ right? I don't know of any other Modern rock stations in LA. I don't get KROQ very clear in my car, so I listen to Star. I like Star, but their playist was getting a little old. Then they started playing stuff KIIS FM would play.. What does the Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani, and Outkast have to do with Hot AC? Aren't they more R&B then Hot AC?

When I am at home I listen to 100.1 the Edge which is a Modern rock station and it's very popular where I live. So wouldn't it be wise like I said earlier for Star to change the Modern rock format? If not please tell me why? I would like to understand why a Radio station would change a format out of the blue.

Out of about 73 stations in the metro, Star is the 7th higest biller. It has incredibly good demos which are concentrated in 25/39 and 25/34 women. With Mike there now, it can only improve, but it is a very good, successful station.

Read K.M.'s comment as to the cluster strategy, which is critical to understanding Star.

Way to go keeping those demos happy this weekend. Stoping the music apruptly. Mixing in weird sound effects over the music. Mixing two songs together. Skipping on purpose. Strange calls from the phone lines... The Radio Geeks love it but The Wall of Women? Their tuning out in droves this weekend.

The Wall of Women doesn't get this is a stunt for something. As of Monday night, we don't know what that something is but if its just to reimage Star theres better ways of doing that. I'm hoping Star goes to Spanish because lets face it... Star is TIRED. It hasn't been good since the early 90's. But it probably will be just a reimaging and we will find out Tuesday.
 
You can step on toes around here without even trying - and believe me, they will let you know. Posters and moderators have a way of letting you know what the rules are in a very direct manner - post at your own risk!

I'm going to stab in the dark and said this is probably a publicity stunt. Think about it. The website is delibrate. Everything is "flipped" and the songs are whacked with hidden messages. Look at how much postings are there here about this. STAR folks are probably all enjoying their long holidays (all the jocks are off!) and laughing the entire time. Moreover, they are getting the attention. A win-win situation if you ask me. If there isn't a format change (we'll find out tomorrow), I'll say whoever came up with this idea is pretty "clever". (not sure how the ratings played out. Personally, all the crap was so annoying and I end up not listening to them at all for the entire weekend.)

I doubt it will finish anywhere near 7th this year in billing. KROQ, KPWR, KIIS, KLSX, KFI, KNX, KOST, KTWV, KKBT, KBIG, and possibly KLOS and KCBS-FM will all outbill KYSR this year. It may be able to sneak into the top ten - which still is extremely strong - but my guess is KSCA and KLVE - and maybe KLAX could outdo it as well.

If you actually look at the music on Mediabase - it is painfully obvious what they are up to. The station is down to about seven currents, a dozen or so recurrents, and about 125 gold titles that actually spun more than once (also note only 40 of them or so are pre-1990). Mr. Marino has tightened it up considerably and made it ULTRA familiar - just as he did when he took over KHHT.

Most likely, this is just part of a reimaging. Although repetitive if you spend a lot of time listening to Star - they are clearly trying to drive some cume here.

This weekend did create some buzz - obviously more with radio geeks than anyone else.

Yes, I am well aware of that, thank you.

I just recall the 12+ numbers being much higher in years past. Assuming that the station's target demo hasn't changed over the years, a drop in 12+ numbers would seem to imply a drop in the target demo numbers as well. That was my point.

And according to radioresearcher's response to your message, my suspicion was correct.
