Star Announcement at 3PM

I actually like much of Jeff Berlin's work - he sounds great on rock radio - but he's probably not the best fit for a Rhythmic AC voice.

I heard a sweeper by Rachel McGrath this morning so apparently they are easing her back into the mix. That will give Star a male and a female imaging voice.

Neil Wilson and Rachel had been doing the Star imaging prior to the flip.

I listened for a bit to the new "Star" on the RADIO.COM app. <yawn>

Did the old Star use jingles or only voices for imaging? These new images sound SO boring, but if they used jingles before, maybe that's why they switched. Some really cool, upbeat jingles might improve the sound a little, but the music isn't that great either. I wouldn't necessarily think Maroon 5 should be considered "rhythm."

Depends on the song. For example "Moves Like Jagger" charted at #9 in the Rhythmic chart in 2011. Also got high numbers in Dance.

Maroon 5 did a number of duets with artists who are familiar to Rhythmic listeners.

I'm interested in how deep in the Gold they're going. It's been a while since Atlantans have heard Kool & The Gang on Star.

Star before and after uses that 4 note tune that they’ve been using for several years. It’s like their trademarked 4 note tune. I heard it during traffic the other day. I did hear 3 back to back Summer 1986 songs the other night - Jermaine Stewart “We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off,” Bananarama “Venus,” and Nu Shooz “I Can’t Wait.”

94Q burned the hell out of "I Can't Wait" when it came out.

I heard "I Feel for You" by Chaka Kahn, which was a hit in 1984.

One of my personal favorites. Written and originally done by Prince in 1979. Redone by the Pointer Sisters in 1982. But none of them could capture the magic of Chaka and the great producer Arif Mardin. The unforgettable harmonica riff was supplied by Stevie Wonder. Amazingly the song only made it to #3 pop, but it was #1 in the R&B and Dance charts. Perfect for this station. BTW the Prince estate released his original acoustic demo of the song last year. Yes that's Prince singing in falsetto:

Prince has long been at or near the top of my list for creativity.

Mine too. One thing I'll add is the reason I Feel For You didn't go #1 pop is because Purple Rain was at #2 and "Wake Me Up " by Wham! was at #1. All the same week. Which means Purple Rain peaked at #2 in the Billboard Hot 100. And it's viewed as his biggest hit.

Yeah but the other day I heard, "Set Fire to the Rain" by Adele and "Please Dont Leave Me" P!nk both are NOT so rhythmic by any means. Now, a true rhythmic-AC would've played the club remixes of either song. If an artist or song is (outside) the rhythmic format, then they should DEF play the club remix for those. That also includes current music as well. If you're going to play "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles at least play a dance remix! Jeez… I've always heard that Entercom had a great track record for this format. But nothing sounds all that different so far, IMO. Except for 80's pop and hip-hop added to the mix. The station, per usual just lacks any sort of wow factor.

I don't know about that. I'd give CBS Radio the credit for what they did in LA. Entercom inherited it.

Adding 80s hip hop is a pretty big change for a station that was currents-based. To me, it's about context. How does this station fit in the market?

Didn't When Doves Cry hit #1?

Yes it was his first #1, followed immediately by Lets Go Crazy, which was his second. Then Purple Rain peaked at #2.

Prince only had a handful of Billboard Hot 100 #1s. But he still gets a ton of airplay 30 years later.

He also wrote a number of songs that became big hits for others, such as Chaka Kahn

KTVW in LA was adrift musically for a long time as Smooth Jazz faded, before they found a new formula that worked. Probably 8-10 years, but other posters probably followed their evolution closer.

It was closer to 5 years. They changed PDs in 2010, and drifted around for two or three before settling on Rhythmic AC on 2014.

But it probably felt like 10.

#1 song for entire year of 1984.

The complication was that The Wave billed enormously, well in the over-$20 million annually. So they did not want to change, so they drifted with the current flow but did very well economically. As some of the music came together, they solidified the format and, of course, they are doing better than ever.

I am actually enjoying listening....Brilliant move ...I have heard others in ATL saying the same thing..

Agree. Especially when Q and Power are playing EDM on Saturday nights. I have only caught repeated songs twice since they started. Similar to B98.5. Very large playlist.
