STARS IN...COWBOYS OUT??

Can CBS give Jerry Jones a better deal then he would have if he decided to stay under the Cumulus deal. Remember it's Jerry's opt out, he left CBS cause they wheren't willing to give him a deal that he was wanting and The Ticket stepped up and did. So why would CBS be in a position to give him what he wants now. Especially now when the economy is crap and budgets are massively getting cut. Remember the bottom line is the bottom line. I just have a feeling that Jerry is not going to trade in a lucrative deal for stronger signal.
The deal that CBS used to offer was rights fees (like 6-8 million a year), and they sold the inventory. The current deal with KTCK involves no rights fees, but Jerry has the inventory. The story I hear is that Jerry has 99% of the inventory in game, most of the pre and post game inventory, owns the weekday show inventory, etc etc.

I think what it will come down to 2 things.
#1 Whether CBS will offer more stuff that Cumulus won't. Like some form of rights fees AND Jerry still controls all the inventory. Or inventory on other stations to promote season ticket sales, etc.
and #2, if Jerry is willing to go with an untested, unsuccessful station for the most popular sports franchise in America. Best case scenario, The Fan does well, and come Septemeber they're at least making inroads against ESPN and KTCK. Worst case scenario, come September The Fan is a train wreck, they're getting no ratings, losing money hand over fist and the cowboys are seen as a joke for being on the #3 sports station in the market.

If I were Jerry, I'd think about going with the Ticket for one more year, and see how the Fan shakes out...Because what would be funnier than agreeing to move to that station and that station failing miserably before your games ever get on the air?

I think you hit the nail on the head here. Jerry's not going to put the games on The Fan unless he's convinced they're a contender in the sports radio game. Right now, they could just as easily fail and flip to another format. The only thing that would soothe Jerry and make a flip less likely is if the Rangers games somehow moved to The Fan. This seems HIGHLY unlikely to me given the fact the reach of 1080 and the widespread Rangers fan base.

People that want to listen to the Cowboys game on the radio are going to find it no matter what station Jerry picks. Do you think it matter when he put it on KVIL, a female targeted AC, or KLUV a marginal rated oldies station? A large majority of the game day listeners tuned in for the broadcast and never thought about visiting those stations during their regular programming.

I don't think it mattered when Jerry was getting a check for 8 million dollars from CBS. At that point he had his money and didn't care where it ran. But now that he's selling it, higher ratings help generate higher ad rates. Which directly translates into more money for Jerry.

Even though it is National ,keep in mind what happened over ten years ago. An upstart network, with only two hits ,neither in the top 20, and financially struggling, made a bold move and wrested the NFC games from CBS which had them for almost 35 years (approx) . They made a tremendous offer pkg and even hired CBS personalities. It was an instant success and saved the network. The same on a local scale with The Fan could happen, if they studied the history right on that deal, and Jerry practically runs that station.

Saw this one coming a mile away. I'm with other posters not buying the "ticket opts out" bit.

As long as who ever ends up with the broadcast if they can sync up the signal with an over the air or a dish broadcast I'll be forever thankful. That was something KTCK was never able to do. KDBN's signal didn't make it to Big Sky Country and I don't have a TIVO. Maybe now that can be fixed.

I will admit I was wrong...but I think this may have something to do with the Stars as well. If the Stars have Monday and Tuesday games, then the Cowboys hour would be pre empted. Who knows, but I think Cowboys radio should be on a station without any other sports play by play. So now 105.3 can make a run at them, but it still factors if The Cowboys want a straight rights fee or the barter deal.

I couldn't agree more!! I thought I was the only one who was annoyed by this!!

We're all annoyed by it, but I traded emails with one of the cumulus types over this- and the problem is that you have these sources:
1. Over the air TV (usally channel 4)
2. Time Warner cable
3. ATT Cable
4. Charter Cable
5. Direct TV
6 Dish Direct

And 2 stations to try to sync with those 6 different sources. Not to mention that if you have a TIVO or DVR, there's another slight lag evident with those (Drives me crazy when the TV in one room is a second or so behind the other and I get an echo as I go from room to room)

The email I got basically said that they tried to sync each station to something (I wanna say Bone to cable and Ticket to over-the-air but I really don't remember) but the problem is they can't make everybody happy....

I totally agree with little1 on this. It's just not easy to accomplish such sync these days. There are too many variables. I personally would rather the radio broadcasts be in sync with the action on the playing field. That way anyone at the game with a radio, will not notice much delay. Of course on an HD Radio broadcast, there will be more noticeable delay.
