STATION CALL LETTERS

And how many call letters are W_NC to indicate a location in North Carolina

WCNC--Elizabeth City (perhaps to indicate Coastal)
WDNC--Durham
WENC--Whiteville (I'm guessing Eastern)
WFNC--Fayetteville
WGNC--Gastonia
WHNC--Hendersonville
WJNC--Jacksonville
WKNC--Raleigh (it's State's station, so maybe some could help with what the "K" means)
WLNC--Laurinburg
WMNC--Morganton
WNNC--Newton
WPNC--Plymouth
WQNC--Harrisburg (not sure what the "Q" is)
WSNC--Winston-Salem
WUNC--Chapel Hill (indicating the University of North Carolina)
WXNC--Monroe (not sure what the "X" means)
WYNC--Yanceyville

WHNC, the former little "Big 89", is actually in Henderson, just to the NE of the Raleigh/Durham area. Hendersonville is closer to Asheville.

Wonder if that WKNC call sign could be WolfpacK North Carolina?

The WCNC call leters are also used on channel 36 in Charlotte. Another W_NC call sign:

WWNC, Asheville: Wonderful Western North Carolina

This pattern is followed in other places as well:

WDVA, Danville, Va.
WEVA, Emporia, Va.
WMVA, Martinsville, Va.
WLVA, Lynchburg, Va.
WRVA, Richmond, Va. (there's an FM by this call sign in Wake Forest, NC, 100.7 the River)
WWDC, Washington, D.C.
WLSC, Loris, S.C.
WCSC, Charleston, S.C.
WAGA, Atlanta, Ga.
WWVA, Wheeling, W.V.
WCKY, Covington, Ky. (Original location..now in Cincinnati)

WKBW Well Known Bible Witness
WBEN Buffalo Evening News (newspaper owner)
WFTL Fort Lauderdale
WGBS George B. Storer (owner)
WRBD Rockin' Big Daddy (R&B Station)
WCKT Cox-Knight Television
WCKR Cox-Knight Radio
WIOD Wonderful Isle Of Dreams
WSRF Surf
WSHE She
WPLG Phillip L Graham (Post Newsweek Founder)
WLBW L.B. Wilson owner

WIS - Wonderful Iodine State (South Carolina)
WMUU - World's Most Unique University (Bob Jones U, Greenville, SC)
WMDV - Wonderful Martinsville, Danville, Va
WSPC - Students of Pfeiffer College (former student station, now an AM in Albemarle, NC)
WGTL - World's Greatest Textile Land (now dark)
WLCM - World's Largest Cotton Mill (now dark)
WLTC - World's Largest Textile Center (now WGIV)
WTIK - Where Tobacco is King

I don't see a one of those stations that was worth a "hoot"! with maybe the exception of WIS at one time!

1240/WRNC, Raleigh--a damn good little Top 40 (unfortunately operating in the shadow of the The Big 85) back 40-or-so years ago. Too bad the calls got tossed aside--now on some college station up north...

WRNC was 1600 in Reidsville for a while, but I think they went silent in the 80s. The building was up on a hill in the early 90s, with some equipment still inside when I happened by it one day.

This is quite an interesting thread...here are some contributions, some of which are dark stations or former calls of existing stations. I won't provide a slogan or description for calls which represent the COL:

1450 WHKP Hendersonville - Where the Heavens Kiss the Peaks
1600 WHVL Hendersonville - currently WTZQ
590 WCAB Rutherfordton - Country At it's Best
1480 WLTM Franklin - We Love These Mountains - currently WPFJ
1160 WTYN Tryon - currently WJFJ
1580 WUIV Icard - Unifour Radio - represented the 4-county area of Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba where this now-dark station was located.
760 WCIS Morganton - Western Carolinas Inspiration Station
1130 WECR Newland, 102.3 WECR-FM Beech Mountain - We Care About the High Country
970 WWIT Canton - Where the Wheels of Industry Turn - currently WYSE

This reminded me of another defunct station...WMBL in Morehead City, 740 AM, which fell silent 11 years ago. Where Morehead and Beaufort Listen.

Another Morehead City station, FBN flagship WOTJ 90.7 FM, stands for Winning Others To Jesus.

Up the coast in Manteo, WVOD, 99.1 FM, stands for Voices Of Dare, while WOBR in Wanchese (95.3 and also once 1530 AM--now WOBX) Outer Banks Radio.

In my "younger" days when I lived in Lumberton, the two AM stations and the two FM stations there had interesting call signs. One of the AMs is now dark and that call sign is now on a station in the Triangle.

WTSB - Where Tobacco Sells Best (call sign now on a station in the Triangle)
WAGR - Agriculture (original owner was the owners of Southern National Bank - now BB&T)
WGSS - Where Great Sensual Sounds (played elevator music, now WKML country)
WJSK - Jeff Steve Kahn (names of the then owners sons - now WFNC-FM)

WHBQ, Memphis-We have better quartets.
WHB, KC-World's Happiest Broadcasters
KLIF-Dallas- (station was in Oak Cliff, TX, so it was KLIF in Cliff)
KHJ-LA-Kindness, Happiness and Joy
WLAC-Nashville-Life and Casualty (insurance company owned it)
WSM-Nashville-We Shield Millions (another insurance company owned them)
WBNS-Columbus, Oh-Wolfe Bank, Newspaper and Shoes (the family businesses)
WBBM-Chicago-World's Best Battery Maker (Mallory Batteries owned it)

just a few off the top of my head...

I understand this station is now 25%-owned by Charlie Sheen... can you guess which part? ::)

Originally the Newland AM'er was WJTP, the initials of the owner, James T. Parker from the Tri-Cities area of Tn.

Also there was The Childress Group of stations mostly all in NC that at one time included:

WMSJ - Sylva: Mickie, Sylvia, Jimmy (Childress - Wife, Daughter, Owner) Now WRGC (Ronnie G. Childress) who was killed while working on the stations transmitter.
WKRK - Murphy (partially owned)
WKYK - Burnsville, Owned for many years by Ardell Sink (a former manager for Jimmy and one of NC's finest broadcasters) and still kept the same call letters.
WKSK - West Jefferson, Owned for years by Jan Cadell, (also a former manager for Jimmy and one of NC's finest broadcasters), kept the call letters.
WCOK - Sparta, Partially owned by Jimmy's Father in Law, Sid Comer, a former Sheriff of Surry County.
When I worked there I was told it stood for Wonderful Carolina OK Country.
There was a station in Saltville Va that he put on the air, but I don't remember those call letters.
I believe there were a few others with the WK_K format but I don't remember them.
I always wondered where the WK_K came from.
At one time WKYK used the slogan We Keep Yancey (County) Kickin'
