STATION PICKS ---- YOU DECIDE THIS TIME!!!!!

Sorry, but I listened to WAYS on the cable tv hookup. There were a couple of AM stations that were carried in addition to the FMs.

Also, sorry WHSC wasn't to your liking. Sure, maybe it doesn't stack up to radio now, but it was a great learning station and plenty of good talent worked there at one time or another.

And you're right about WSDC. I worked for Harold Bledsoe there after I left WHSC. Nothing beat getting up at 5 am to drive thru Lincoln Village to sign the station on at 6.

When I was in high school (in Hartsville) I could plug my cable tv cable into my Marantz tuner and pick up WKZQ and Big WAYS in Charlotte (another nominee for another time). After that, I always LUSTED after a job at the Q.

Come on Scott, 61 Big WAYS was not available on Cable TV of Hartsville, since it was an AM station. However, Cable TV did have a very popular FM service, which included WROQ, WBCY, and WSOC from Charlotte, WQDR from Raleigh and about 5 other FMs. FM on cable was very big in Hartsville due to the horrible selection of radio available in the Pee Dee in the 70s and 80s. Certainly, WHSC led the pack---one of the worst I ever heard. At least Hartsville had WSDC, also known as the "projects station" since it was located in the middle of a housing project.

Hi John,

You're probably gonna wish you didn't speak up. I remember hearing a story about you in the old 'TGR building behind the 'Q. Apparently, it was something to the effect of you running out into the lobby and, for some reason, jumping as you went through the door. As I recall from the story, you cracked your head pretty good when your head hit the top of the door frame. I think I mentioned it almost every time I saw you...so I guess you'll have some Brian Phillips-like adjectives to toss my way...lol. Sorry, dude.

Scott,
Not meaning to semi-hijack this thread for a personal reply but it's only been about 25 years since we last spoke. Don't worry, I've told the story of knocking myself out cold many times. It's never advisible to leap through a doorframe when you're 6 foot 3.
Luckily I had an LP on and came around with about 30 seconds before the endgroove to stagger into the control room and get something else on the turntable. The Sales Manager Dave(something) rang the front door that night. I brained myself right in front of him but he was powerless to help as the door was locked. He thought I had killed myself since I was out like a light for a while.

I remembered Bob Chase's name about 5 minutes after I posted. Remember how satin tour jackets were the rage in the 80s?. Man, I was so proud of my KZQ jacket. I still have it.

I'm doing the morning show in Charleston, SC on a new start up Classic Country station, AM 950 WJKB.
I hope you too are doing well.

Yeah, it's been a while. I have one of those patented "off-kilter" senses of humor, so the "John is dead" story(I get the Beatles reference in your screen name...I'm a Beatle freak, too) always cracked me up. I do remember the satin jackets. I had two, and, like you, was very proud of them. Good luck in Charleston. I know you'll do well. I'm up in the Outer Banks now selling cars and keeping my fingers in radio a little and doing voice work.

Scott, I'm sorry, I know my comment was rude to a person who worked for WHSC. Regarding 61 Big WAYS on Cable TV of Hartsville, after thinking about it, I remembered that the Big WAYS morning show was simucasted on WROQ for at least several years---I used to listen when I lived in Hartsville. Regarding the cable FM service in Hartsville, the cable company had a separate FM antenna, reciever, and modulator for each station they carried. The antennas were very near the top of their 500 ft tower, so it was pretty high quality. They struggled with WQDR and WKZQ, but after trying several different antennas finally got WQDR right. WKZQ always had issues. I think they also carried 104.1 from Conway in their pre-WYAV days. I'm trying to remember what other stations they carried---maybe WCOS-FM and WNOK-FM, maybe WPUB? More "local" statons, such as Florence, Darlington, and the Big DM were also on there, but not modulated (transmitted on a different frequency) like the ones listed above.
