Stations at Milwaukee Zoo a la Carte

I was really surprised to see the small number of stations attending the Milwaukee Zoo a la Carte this past Thursday thru Sunday. I was also surprised at the condition of the set-ups and the lack of "live" broadcasts.

Our set-up, WEZY, broadcast with a vector everyday for 4 hours from a custom tent set-up.

I heard WMCS do some cell phone cutaways, but they stayed inside their enclosed unit so they had no public contact.

WKTI's lodge unit looked really good, but I don't think they were broadcasting.

WJZI: Nice tent set-up.

WQBW: cheap looking tent set-up with am uniterested person sitting there.

WMYX: Nice kiosk with van.

WOKY: Huge unit with intern-like person sitting there.

WXSS: Tent & van with overmodulated audio playing.

WKLH: Truck with nobody present.

On Saturday afternoon, that is all I noticed. It's sad that such a golden opportunity for radio to shine is missed at one of the biggest family events in Milwaukee.

Yes, but Don that would require many of the Milwaukee stations to have someone (live) on-air over the weekend or be willing to pay OT to someone to sit out there.

Wasn't this event supposed to be about food...at the zoo? Then I would understand if every food vendor was there. So really this event wasn't about radio. Summerfest & music, I see the connection. Bon Jovi & radio, I see the connection. Food & the Zoo...and radio - not so much the connection (IMO). Personally I think its ridiculous that every radio station have to (BLEEP) itself out to every event that happens in this city. Although I realize a lot of this is driven by the big advertisers (Miller, Potawatomi, etc). Even though I didn't attend this event, wouldn't it have looked really stupid if every radio station had a booth set up...at a food event? I think so. Or, if a radio station will be at an event, at least have someone present to represent the station. Here's a question - why does radio feel they need to be at all these events and not local TV stations? TV may report on it later, but why don't they ever have booths set up too?

There were music stages throughout the zoo grounds.

Any radio station that doesn't take advantage of promoting themselves at a "major" event like Milwaukee Zoo a la Carte is missing an opportunity. Let's see...73,708 people (official figure)...and, unlike Summerfest, there is no charge for the station to be there...if you ran a station, would you be there?

We were at State Fair for several years, broadcasting everyday from the fair. One year, our entire tent set-up was stolen when we went to get it on Monday morning after the fair ended. Also, State Fair requires you have personnel at your booth 8am-10pm. It became too much for us.

Not quite! Were you at Summerfest? We were there with a big tent and a Tieline. Same for State Fair.

I think Kent's point (and mine) is that you go out of your way to "critique" the other stations, to the point of questioning their priorites when most of us just got done doing two weeks worth of live broadcasting (from, as you noted, 8am-10pm). It's easy to do the "best" job at a second tier event when you have nothing else going on!<P ID="signature">______________

Let's review. State Fair, over 800,000 people in ten days. Saw the Brew, KLH, TMJ, FM 106, WSSP ... no sign of Don. Third of July fireworks, 500,000+ down there. Saw a bunch of the Empire's children there ... no sign of Don. Summerfest, I don't know the attendance figures at this time, but, no sign of Don. All major events that I attended and, no sign of Don. I am a radio listener and if it wasn't for the fact that I read these radio boards I wouldn't know that WEZY exists. I have NEVER seen them at any of the events that I attend.

Just my observation.

Lets see, the State Fair was too much for you, but yet you critisize us for not having the showing that YOU think we should have had at ala Carte??

At State Fair, we had SIX stations, 3 ISDN lines, 3 Vectors, 2 martis, back up equipment, and the people to man them (actually we had people there until 11PM and did some LIVE broadcasts until midnight), then dove right into Miller and did ala Carte on the side (get it??? a reference to food). I feel like I am doing a "Mine is bigger than yours" comparison here. I am not too sure I am so keen on your critisisms of other stations when you finally decide to show up at ONE event with a SINGLE station, just because they dont line up with YOUR priorities.

In regards to your tent being stolen, we have not had any issues with State Fair. Perhaps your people didnt pack things up properly. Anyways why would someone want to take a WEZY tent, or was it just a non-descript tent?

Toughen up. If you are going to be in this business learn how to handle "observations" and stop whining how tired you are. For goodness sake, if you are with Clear Channel or Saga, look at your resources...lots of people and equipment.

Sounds like you are bigger. We're just a pair of local Racine stations, not Milwaukee giants.

Um Don, You are WAY out of line here! There is a difference between OBSERVATIONS, and self promotion. No one WHINED about how tired we are! We, and others did great, and we arent tired! Other stations just had different priorities...different than yours. Do YOU have a problem dealing with that? Perhaps it is YOU that should toughen up. If you cant play with the big dogs, stay off of the porch!

As Don stated before, events outside of Racine & Kenosha Counties aren't priorities for his 2 Racine stations as they're run to serve the Racine/Kenosha areas. May not necessarily be a bad thing. It's true there are some listeners in Waukesha & Milwaukee counties as there's no interference from 92.5 in most of those 2 counties, but those counties are more than well served by the big corporations while Racine & Kenosha Counties tend to be underserved by the Milwaukee stations. But I don't want to criticize Don too much, but he might want to be careful about some of the audience that is outside of his stations' listening area. While some listeners are outside of the area the stations serve, some of those listeners might do business in some way with the advertisers, so a Racine station like his might want to take something like that into consideration. I know when I go up to Milwaukee, I always stop off at some business in Kenosha or Racine County just before going to Milwaukee. Even when I eventually to Milwaukee, Racine county will be one of the first counties I'll think about for business simply because sales tax is 5.1% compared to 5.6 in Milwaukee & Ozaukee Counties with Kenosha county 2nd, and Racine & Kenosha also have Shopko, which is one of the stores I like to stop by too, which neither Milwaukee nor Waukesha Counties have, or a Woodmans, which is around Pleasant Prairie.

What you say is true. With limited resources, we do some Milwaukee events like Zoo a la carte and Festa Italiana. If we feel it's our audience, we will go outside the Racine-Kenosha area.

"Toughen up"? Boy Don, what a pro. Listen, be proud of what you did at the broadcast. There's the pat on the back you were looking for (since, face it, the whole point of the post was self-promotion...and that's OK). You know, though, there isn't anything classy about criticizing others to make yourself look good.

It's also interesting to note that you're the first one to make noise when someone "observes" something about YOUR station.

Would we all love to give 110% at every event? Sure. Since it's been a while since you went to Racine because "you wanted to" let me clue you in. We do not have unlimited resources. We have limited budgets and staff that we have to spread out and use wisely. If we could pick and choose, like you, it would be easy. Instead, we have to prioritize where we go. The Zoo event, though worthy, drew the short straw.
