Stations slow to update (used outdated equipment for YEARS)

I don’t have an answer for this one…….but somebody out there does. Tell us about stations that were stuck in the past and were slow to accept new technology and update studios/equipment. How cheap were they?

I was once told there was a station that was still using carts, specifically because they felt it was the only way to keep jocks from sneaking in off-format songs. Supposedly they would switch to computer automation during unmanned hours, and only one staff member had control of that system. That's an interesting way to control the jocks...

When I worked in Great Falls, MT (2009-2011) the on air playback system for the newscasts was an Apple Mac G4 and a final cut pro timeline. The director literally punched the video clips by pushing the space bar (a play shortcut) and hitting the "up" arrow to jump to the next clip (in the case of a vosot or wipe vo).

We still shot video on prosumer dvc-mini and dvc pro cameras.

And when I first got there, graphics were manually typed and keyed on an ancient Chyron machine. About a year later they invested in a Harris company graphics system that interfaced into ENPS.

Basically, owner Max Media would buy stations, invest a bit to upgrade them to the bare minimum then sell them off after a few years for a profit.

They just recently sold the Montana cluster to Calkins Media of Spokane (KHQ-TV) and from the looks of things, Calkins had actually made some significant upgrades.
