When I worked in Great Falls, MT (2009-2011) the on air playback system for the newscasts was an Apple Mac G4 and a final cut pro timeline. The director literally punched the video clips by pushing the space bar (a play shortcut) and hitting the "up" arrow to jump to the next clip (in the case of a vosot or wipe vo).
We still shot video on prosumer dvc-mini and dvc pro cameras.
And when I first got there, graphics were manually typed and keyed on an ancient Chyron machine. About a year later they invested in a Harris company graphics system that interfaced into ENPS.
Basically, owner Max Media would buy stations, invest a bit to upgrade them to the bare minimum then sell them off after a few years for a profit.
They just recently sold the Montana cluster to Calkins Media of Spokane (KHQ-TV) and from the looks of things, Calkins had actually made some significant upgrades.
