Stephanie Miller's Station Scorecard

After two years on the air the Stephanie Miller Show can now be heard on 51 stations M-F across the country including 4 of the Top 10 Markets and 11 of the Top 20 Markets. On the West Coast (6am-9am), she's on live in Morning Drive in 14 markets

OK, she is hyping things a bit (this is radio here). To get four top 10 markets you have to include Detroit; actually she is cleared on a station in Ann Arbor (a separate market outside the Detroit metro) which puts a listenable signal - maybe - as far as Metro airport. And a couple of the others are weekend "best of" clearances. But all in all, she's not doing badly and she keeps picking up live weekday clearances steadily. Her numbers are not spectacular but solid. She is emerging as the top performer in the progressive talk format. Fortunately for her, Seder and what's left of Jerry are nothing to worry about.

WDTW's site may be wrong. I do recall that they were carrying Miller's show, but now it shows Springer. Might be a recent development, since I do recall her being on there, but I don't live in Detroit, so I don't know.

She's on in these top markets:

2. L.A.
4. San Francisco Bay
8. Washington
11. Boston
12. Miami
13. Seattle
16. Minneapolis/St. Paul

I'm probably missing a few here. And there could be some peashooter in a Top 20 market carrying her on weekdays, otherwise, many do carry weekend best-of's, like KQKE in S.F. where she just moved in to the morning slot.

And syndicators often count weekend 'best-of's'. It just sounds better. Everyone does it, okay? Hell, Mike Gallagher hypes up affiliates where he's delayed and buried in the middle of the night.

As far as the West Coast, she is on a lot of smaller stations, some of them aren't even progressive talkers. KCMD in Portland and KJLL in Tuscon are hot talkers.

Detroit always carried Jerry - even before AAR picked up the show.
The Detroit station is on the far West side of Detroit (it was the legendary rocker Keener 13). It's COL is actually Dearborn. There is a good deal of signal overlap between it and the Ann Arbor station (COL is Saline), which may account for Clear Channel's decision (CC owns both the Ann Arbor and Dearborn stations) to put Steph on one and Jerry on the other. Ann Arbor's website schedule has not been updated since recent schedule changes but it looks like other than Steph/Jerry, the two carry the same shows otherwise.
AAR really doesn't get a decent signal to the East Side and much of the Northern burbs (the new center of population and growth in the region). Despite that, Keener could make it to Number One but that was then (mid 60s) and this is now.

Stephanie nows owns the Liberal Talk early AM slot. These are the markets where I have found her. She dominates all other early AM lib talkers.

You might want to double check Phoenix.
They do a local morning show in the Stephanie's time slot, according to their website, and don't even carry a weekend "best of" Steph.

Jerry apparently gets Cincinnati and Chicago.

Seder gets New York and the turn-keys.

Looks like Phoenix just changed their program schedule. This is Stephanie's first lost affiliate. Interesting. They also downgraded Peter B. by moving him to the 12a-2a slot. Sounds like the lunatics arranging the furniture in the Asylum. Like I said "she dominates all other early AM lib talkers."

Amen. Mostly because she's good. Partly because she lacks meaningful competition in the pre-luncheon period (except for a few local shows).

You may be thinking of KXXT, which was the original Phoenix libtalker. They were sold to a religious group.

As far as I know, KPHX has always had Mike Newcomb in mornings. He helped Nova M get the LMA at the station.

I stand corrected. KPHX just revamped their schedule:

New Line Up - New Schedule

What the heck does that mean?
Technical hurdles? Running a live local show in the same time slot is a "technical hurdle?"

Well, most MDs are incapable of straight answers any way.

Stephanie owns the AM market (i.e. before Franken) on Lib Talk stations. She's getting about half of all listeners in this daypart

Avg Listeners (per 15 minutes)
Miller 473,404
Seder 182,010
Local Host 168,834
Springer 138,862
Total 963,109

%/All Listeners
Miller 49.2%
Seder 18.9%
Local Host 17.5%
Springer 14.4%

Wow! How The Mighty Springer has fallen.

Assuming that Jerry's numbers before Seder moved to mornings were about the total the two of them have now, Stephanie was cleaning up in the morning before last month.

The fact Seder is (a weak) number two suggests a lot of turnkey progressive talk stations have automation systems which are not equipped to switch satellite channels - or some cluster managements just are not paying attention to or bothering with their progressive talk station.

Add Boston! (wkox/wkxs) and New Haven (wavz)

Strange her webmaster would miss THAT one! ???

Interesting how I heard the "talk master" the other day take a swipe at O'Reilly, something she seems powerless to resist like doing every 15 minutes.

In giving her listeners last week "some inside broadcasting information," she told her listeners that O'Reilly's show "was having trouble selling spots" and that advertisers weren't buying the show.

Oh my gosh.

A host who's near the bottom of the ratings "telling on" a major competitor.

Like there's a ton of national spots airing on her show? I hear a lot of PSAs and music fill, much like Rhandi Rhodes' show.

Kind of like the pot calling the keetle black.
