Stereo Tool V.7.03

I didn't respond because I really don't know why this would happen, I hoped that others would respond. I see a few responses from others now. One question: If you switch to higher sample rates, do the input/output bars turn red? And to confirm that you're really using ASIO, are they green otherwise? (If you're not using ASIO they would be blue).

The other big change is that it allows the angle of clipping detection to be a lot higher. There's plenty of flat-top clipping that's then analog mastered and ends up being 45 degrees. I've also allowed for much more "curved" clipping to be detected. There's also a few tweaks that didn't seem like they should make a big difference, but did, even extremely small changes (0.01%) from where I found optimal.

Breakaway is coming. But what I can't wait for is the next thing after that, because I've had some ideas that'll revolutionize the simplicity of control, the transparency, and consistency of audio processing. Stuff that'll make Breakaway fans wish they had whatever hardware it rolls out on first once again. ;) But the Omnia.9 is still very new and I don't have to tell you how it sounds. (p.s. there's a big update for it that's public now)

As for Stereo Tool, and me doing any presets for it, I've told Hans in the past that I'll make an attempt at one once he's "done" with his new multiband. The declipper preset is a start though, and Hans you're welcomed to publish it. I think I just came up with a name for it, I'll msg you elsewhere. :)
 
I hesitate to repeat anything I've heard as it hasn't held in the past. I will say that the main holdup thus far as been that the copy protection scheme idea we came up with (which is one of two in the world that haven't ever been cracked) is a major pain in the ass to implement. Easily the least fun thing to do for weeks on end (adding it to the new framework), even when Leif has found the time to put that into his schedule (right now).

Jesse, I'm not sure this is the right place or you are the right person to ask, but... why doesn't Leif bring this kind of info to the users?
A lot of them (including me) have almost accepted BBP to be abandoned since no information whatsoever is shared and, frankly, Leif is playing dead on the BBP forum.

I've been lurking on this thread.

First off, congrats to Hans as he's made amazing strides with his work. Also, I enjoy the way he looks at all this. Continued success with your efforts my friend!! :)

Regarding Leif, I know he's been extremely busy with Linear Acoustic stuff. Right now, all of us are in NAB-hibernate mode, as we need to button up stuff for NAB. I'm sure he'll circle back around, when he can.

Leif is brilliant, and I'm sure the O9 is proof of that fact.

I just think that Breakaway was his "public outlet" for his creativity. Not to speak for other Breakaway users, but my gut says now that Leif has a couple of bigger, more commercialized, and likely more profitable outlets for his ideas, Breakaway will have to fall by the wayside out of necessity. He should just make it official.

As to Stereo Tool, it's come a LONG way from the first few times I've tried it - I'm impressed. I wouldn't be afraid to implement it immediately for streams, and would consider it for certain on-air situations after a little more development. Some things in the GUI are still a tad confusing, but once one plays with it for a bit, it's pretty easy to set up. At least it's fully "tweakable", something that Breakaway users have wanted for years.

Just to provide some closure on the 192 issue, I have 2 identical machines and put Stereo Tool on the second machine. For whatever reason, the 192 sample rate works fine on that machine. So while I may never know why the other one wouldn't close the sale at 192K, at least I have a working system. I believe the question of what driver I'm using came up...long ago I found that the newer drivers would not work with BBP and Marian support suggested I roll back to (IIRC) 2.0.1.1 which worked fine. So that is what I have used with my Trace Alpha cards since then. Thanks to those who chimed in on my request for help...life I got in the way for a few days and I didn't have time to bring the topic up to speed. Leif, Hans, Frank and all others involved, all I can say is what an exciting time it is to be alive & playing with this stuff. You're all awesome!
 
BBP and ST are top of the line both in price and performance. If you want the best of the best with all the bells and whistles then Orban PC1101 is your choice -- but the $1,200 cost is a big issue for small market stations and internet only streaming ops.

I'm not sure this $1200 dollar card performs better than Breakaway Live? For streaming you don't even need the Marian Trace, so all you need is a moderate PC (it runs on a P4), a decent soundcard (input) and a $129 online purchase. I loved the fact that the old Orban PC1100 runs solitary and that you could even reboot the PC wthout a hickup in the audio. But unfortunately, the PC1101 lost that edge. So what difference between Breakaway and the PC1101 would justify spending a $1000 extra just for streaming? You could easily setup 2 extra machines for that...

As for ST, it definately is getting there, but I think Breakaway gives a better result 'right out of the box'. There is still a (steep) learning curve for ST.

I completely agree on your Breakaway Live vs PC1101 comparison. And to a degree can carry that argument to BBP or ST vs the Omnia 9. Does the 9 sound better? Of course. Does it sound over $9000 better? That can be debated. At the very least, the cost vs sound quality curve is not linear. As far as the learning curve on ST, it's there and it's real. Hopefully the multiband rebuild will substitute the terms "attack" & "release" for up and down. That alone will smooth out some of the learning curve. But...if you install it and set it to FM Transmitter (US,Stereo) and do nothing else except set the modulation level, it sounds fine. I may have played with ST years ago and walked away in frustration but as the saying goes, "this ain't your father's Stereo Tool" IMHO.
 
Bob, have you played with the beta 040 version yet? It just keeps getting better.Looking forward to a final release version. This software rocks! To my ears,it just sounds more natural than BBP.Still tweaking,though.

I see NO reason whatsoever to replace the terms "attack" and "release". Those are standard terms when talking about audio processing.

...and they aren't "up" and "down."
 
To be sure I was clear, Stereo Tool is not using Attack and release...they're using Up and Down (I may have the Up/Down reversed--each time I have to manually adjust them so I know what they mean).

No oldiesstation, I'm still using 7.03, but will go for the new Beta and play soon. I did pull the trigger today and sign up to register the whole shebang...I want this project to continue forward. There are two areas that stand out as more natural on ST...my dry voice and one liner I run that takes the letter T and repeats the leading edge of it maybe 8X. The rough edges on the "T" are handled more gracefully on ST. Fun times...
