Live 105 music director in the 80's & 90's. Will do mornings starting April 1. Pretty cool someone can come back to a station after 15 years.

Wow, that's a blast from the past! Good for him!

This is very interesting. Could they be planning to lean even more heavily on "classic alt" and less on new stuff? Masters is a legend and I'll certainly tune in on Monday morning. But he's nearly as old as Tim Jeffries on competitor KFOG. A year ago both stations were trying to "go younger".

Unless this is a lavish April Fool's stunt...

Masters is a legend and if they're going for a "classic alt" skew, they've made the right choice. Good point about April Fools, hope that's not the case.

Do any stations still do April Fools stunts in SF?

I remember an old stunt at KSOL where they pretending to go all Disco as an April Fools stunt.

and don't forget Live 105's "K-Gay" stunt in 1998, which was so popular they started doing it every Pride Weekend in June for a number of years.

The great thing about radio is that you can't SEE the DJ. So if listeners in their 20s and 30s tune in, and don't know Steve, they will have no idea if he's 25 or 55. We're decades past the era when rock DJs had to be young because they did TV dance party shows, and I doubt the Live 105 jocks do many personal appearances.

Bring back a retread -- great idea!!! Worked so well when Sean Demery came back. 1.5 share...here we come!

Wasn't KOME kicking Live 105's butt during much of the 1990's?

About a month or two ago they had an all-gold weekend (with more than just the usual Bizarre Love Triangle/I Ran/Don't You/Personal Jesus/etc) and they've been a lot more gold heavy since, especially on the weekends. Their playlist also has become noticeably more diverse.

I wonder what kind of shakeup this means for the rest of the DJs. (I wouldn't mind too much if half of them were replaced.)

It would be awful of them to pull something awesome like this as an April Fool's joke...also who starts an April Fools Joke almost a week early.

Yes, so much so that CBS had KOME's management take over Live 105! Can't say that's who's running it still, but neither can we say that KOME would be doing it better.

KITS has been horrible ever since they dumped "Hot Hits ;D

Another logo change as well. I believe they are also the markets lowest rated commercial music FM? And its been like that for several years I think as well. Does the station bill well?

I think you're forgetting 92.7...

While it's nice to have Masters back, and it's been fun hearing the occasional forgotten alt-radio nugget ("Dominatrix Sleeps Tonite", etc), the show itself is pretty dull. Today they were having people call in to tell Steve what their favorite TV show is. Wow, how original. I guess they're treading the line between too much talk and not enough, and you gotta figure those of us who remember him from 25 years ago would love to hear him tell "back in the day" stories, while the younger demo doesn't really care.

I was as excited as anyone when Live 105 brought back Masters and started playing older stuff -- not just obvious alternative "classics" but some genuine haven't-heard-that-in-ages tracks from back in the day. But after a couple of months they cut way back on the obscurities. The format of Masters' show has seen more twists and turns than Highway 1. One week they're talking sports; the next they're ignoring sports. His morning Modern Mix slot was great and then they dumped it. Now they're back to playing currents 90+ times a week. I like that Daft Punk song but jeezus.

Yesterday they promo'd today as "Throwback Thursday" and solicited requests. Well.. so far that has amounted to one or 2 songs an hour -- one of which, around 6:30am, was "Under Pressure", which between KFOG, K-FOX, The Bone and Oldies 103.7 you can probably hear 87 times a week in this market. Are you really telling me somebody requested that song because they hadn't heard it in ages? Good gawd. Lucky for Masters he has a full-time gig at that video game company.

This is one of the hidden secrets of request shows. The requests have to fit the existing format, and in the rotation that was already planned. Often the requests are promoted not to build a play list but to check on the demographics of who's listening. The old Bill Drake credo was that the music a person heard at age 16 is the music they like all their lives. Thus, you can fairly accurately guess the age of the majority of listeners at any given time by asking them to phone in their requests.

Yikes! You're saying that there's a "hidden secret" to request shows? You mean other than that they're a sham to make the public think that minute-by-minute playlists aren't scheduled days in advance?
