Steve Masters back at Live 105

Yikes! You're saying that there's a "hidden secret" to request shows? You mean other than that they're a sham to make the public think that minute-by-minute playlists aren't scheduled days in advance?

Of course, it's ALL smoke and mirrors. When I was growing up a geek I listened to the studly DJs on the Top 40 stations. Then I met some of them. Egads! They were geekier than I was. And many of these guys were just 21 or 22 and hardly the macho studs I'd imagined them to be.

And, of course, the contests. From time to time Clear Channel runs a texting contest where "You can win $1000", except that that $1000 is not per station, but across all stations in the group running the contest. Thus, your chance of winning $1000 by listening to KKSF or KIOI is probably as rare as getting struck by lightning.

The old sayin' goes "The Captain Must Go Down With His Ship". Live 105 is on life support and the only question is when not if will the plug be pulled.

Their ratings suck but they have for some time. The fact that they're sold as a package with Alice is, I suspect, their saving grace.

People posting here have been saying that for at least 5 years. True - the question is always "when" with radio formats...no format lasts forever, but I bet most of you 5 years ago would have said Live 105 would have been long gone by now.

In the era of big corporate radio, formats seem to be staying around much longer. Codgers like me who post here like to reminisce about The Big 610/KFRC, which lasted about 20 years with the Top 40 format, but how long has this version of KMEL been around (with evolution and adjustments, I grant you) - from the end of the "Camel" album rock format , and beginning the "All Hit" format? 29 years, according to Wikipedia, and still going strong.

KIIS-FM in LA has logged about 38 years with the same basic format, easily twice as long as the exalted KHJ.

Granted, Live 105 is hardly KIIS-FM or KMEL, but the big media corps these days seem to grab onto a format - especially if it's unique in the market - and hold onto it much longer than in the pre-deregulation days.

I remember L.A.'s Hit Music 64 KFI, I felt the format was very similar to 610 KFRC. Flipped to 640 KFI NewsTalk, has been very successful for many years!

Thoughts on Masters' performance so far? Doesn't seem like anything special.

I stopped listening about 6 weeks ago, when what was originally interesting -- genuinely rare "lost" tracks from back-in-the-day -- gave way to the same-old same-old. When your idea of Throwback Thursday is to play warhorses like "Under Pressure", you've lost me. Masters' show seemed to change every week. (Let's do weather. Let's not do weather. Let's talk sports. Let's ignore sports altogether.) Dunno how their demos break down at this point but their overall ratings never seem to change significantly.
