Steve McCoy in Denver

Star has been through 3 PD's and is on the 2nd morning show since McCoy left. B98 has had internal changes in management and the jury is really out on the morning show change. But it'll all work out. It's just radio.

McCoy's ratings were dropping for a pretty extended period before Star 94 fired him. Pretty much from the day the Bert Show came on. The downward trend of Star didn't start the day Steve McCoy left either.

It's been downhill at Star ever since Superphat Mikey left.

Shannon was a finalist to go hang out with Regis. Too bad they didn't keep her - she was the best "clapper."
I wonder what happened to SuperPhat?

Ok I guess when it comes to McCoy every thought is micromanaged and commented on like a Bob Neal staff meeting. Sorry. Since this is just a board post and not a corporate presentation or a term paper I didn't throw out the ratings and anticipate every argument heard before coming back at me.

You know we put a lot of emphasis and blame on and short change personalities who have no control over a playlist or marketing. I'm one who at times can't fully understand the River or B98 s when the playlist feels redundant. We all watch Star PD's go through mood swings and changes and in their case a few PDs were held accountable along with the customary blame of talent who had to execute new playlists that altered the station. Star was trying to go younger fast and it was just...a...mess...

But in my haste to type and post I failed to put up one of the key points and I'll blame it on not taking my A D D medication.
You don't have to read far to see everybody agreeing on a frustration of the big 3 C's messing up the market: Cumulus, Clear Channel and Cox.
The station McCoy joined is a small group. The owner lives in Atlanta. The story here, whether it gets bigger or blows up, is basically one small independent operator not afraid to take on group owners in Denver is showing success. All I had was morning show numbers. I've not studied nor really care about the history of KOOL FM but I am very happy and should have pointed out earlier the station is making progress with a new mornings how, without reams of research and overpaid consultants or big money giveaways or heavy tv buys. It's like the old days when people heard, liked and listened.
Just because a guy has VP or PD title after his name doesn't mean he knows his audience, or competitor, or what his market will absorb in yet another change. Now we have the career body count and disappointing radio product to prove that last statement. I just like when the underdog does ok. Atlanta doesn't have a "small operator" to root for anymore.

So sorry to mention this again, but is Steve responsible for the last 3 nightmare months at KOOL? Looks like the bottom fell out of the station.

Just wondering.

Not at all. This thread started as an accolade to Steve and the job he was doing. When I saw in All Access the ratings in Denver had been dive bombing, I recalled this thread.

Not sure exactly how that's a fixation since those don't usually involve 3 months of lag time but whatever.

Please now return to the firebombing of Q100.
