Great news! But--what happened to Mike Manion? He certainly didn't last long, and I thought he did a decent job!

Regardless, a warm welcome to Steve O'Brien!

Mike Manion was given the heave-ho on Friday. Without warning from what I hear.

Mike had a pleasant voice and sounded like a pro, but he didn't do much except read the liner cards. Obviously with a music-intensive AC format, that's the primary duty for the DJs, but there is still room for any of their DJs to have a more exciting and energetic style, and the difference on Steve O'Brien's first day was immediately noticeable... for example, Steve actually talks up a song and hits the post, rather than just using the station's jingles to intro and outro all the music.

Nonetheless, WMGQ's two prevous morning show hosts (Lou Russo and Joel Katz) have both reappeared on other NJ stations, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mike Manion does the same.

I am in complete agreement about Steve's style. It is MUCH better than Manion's and is much more entertaining. I've found myself tuning to Magic 98.3 in the morning instead of 106.7 Lite-FM. Although the music is, in my opinion, not nearly as good on Magic as it is on Lite, the personality makes ALL the difference. If Steve keeps up what he's doing on the show right now, I will definitely be tuning in every morning. I am glad that the management at Magic is giving Steve the opportunity to talk up some of the songs. Talking up the songs really makes a difference for me. Because it sounds less automated and more "freestyle" it makes for an enjoyable morning program.

Congrats to Steve and to Magic 98.3!

Another good "interactive" DJ on WMGQ is Matt Newman, who hosts their Saturday night '80s show. Actually, it's a "mostly '80s show" because he will regularly accomodate listener requests to play songs from the '70s or '90s as well.
