Steve Slaton in 95.7 KJR FM??

I heard rumors Slaton might be back on the air soon.. afternoons in 95.7 KJR FM????

Word from sources on Elliot Avenue confirm the rumor. The new Afternoon Drive Host and Music Director is indeed the above mentioned and he takes the reigns of KJR VERY soon. Does this mean more Beatles and Allmans and less Bee Gees and Abba for Oldies? Cant see Slaton playing some of the same songs he took such pleasure in blowing up back in the disco destruction days. Dancing Queen and Stayin Alive spun by the Godfather of Seattle Rock and Roll ??? That would be one of the seven signs.

Clear Channel isn't likely to be changing their recently researched music strategy for any former KZOK disc jockey. They didn't change it for Bob Rivers and won't do it for Steve Slaton either.

I'll be happy to hear Steve back on the air. It was really very sad what happened to him at OK 102 and a half..But, that's show biz. It wasn't just the music but what Steve added to it from a personal knowledge and trivia base that made him a good listen. Most jocks today just punch it up, play it and once in a while back announce..

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I am sick and tired of hearing the same people in this market like Slayton. Heidi May was the exception as she is a newer voice as compared to these geezers. This market is sick. There is no innovation and no new, exciting voices on the air. Instead we are treated to old-timers Rivers and Slayton on a station that was once female tilting and thriving at a 6.3 share.

You're not gettin' QFC money, you're not gettin' Top Foods money, Safeway and the rest. You blew it, CC. KJR will end up being just another male-dominated tired ole station like KZOK.....well la dee dah.

Hmm. Old timers on an Oldies Station. Travesty. Perhaps Ricker would be the bolder fresher choice. Or maybe Monty, or some kid that wants to be in radio. Whoops. There aren't any!

Seriously, KJR has had some good PPM months, but has never cruised along at the top of ratings and billing. Now it will have two if the longest running highest revenue generating talents in the market in adults. Live and local. Could be worse.

Heidi May has been on the air in Seattle longer than Bob Rivers.

Crap (maybe). I love Slaton and welcome him back with open arms but I hope to God they don't touch Casey Kasem's American Top 40 The 70s. It's a Sunday morning tradition for me and I don't know where else it could go in this market.

At the same time, I'll definitely be tuning in to hear Slaton whenever he's on. Kinda hard to imagine Steve and AT40 on the same station but I don't think I'm the only one who's a big fan of both, so hopefully...

Sunday morning tradition

The only Sunday morning tradition I'm interested in keeping is Resurrection Sunday with Jim Keller on KNDD. Best radio show of all time in Seattle next to Stephen Rabow's Dance Party.

Glad Slaton is back on. Heidi May? Gimme a break. ::)

Bob Rivers tomorrow morning (Friday) at 9am with a VERY special guest.

- an email from KJR FM.

hummmmmmmmmmm......I wonder who.

The smart thing would be to take all this amazing classic rock jock talent and turn KJR-FM into a serious, full blown classic rock competitor to KZOK. Only makes sense, KZOK has been NEEDING it......

Whoops! Scratch that. I see the onslaught of naysayers coming on like Mongol hordes why it will "NEVER" work on the horizon.....

But KJR-FM leaves me confused and a bit annoyed. First, they became "Oldies 95.7" - which really seemed like a knee-jerk reaction to KVI's flip to oldies. KJR-FM could have continued very well with it's "Seattle's Greatest Hits" (now a KVI slogan......Hmmmmm....) sound, which in KJR-FM's case was already classic rock-leaning, yet not quite the truest definition of classic rock (deeper album cuts, closer to the AOR sound of years past.) It essentially was a classic rocker with jingles. Only in Seattle and with the KJR heritage does something like THAT work

Now listen up folks. Because this is important. You remember the 7.7 ratings KJR-FM got with their all-Christmas music format last year? Do you seriously think Clear Channel is going to sacrifice that kind of sales department porn next November? Now get this: Bob Rivers and Steve Slaton, playing CHRISTMAS music* for two months in a row.

If you think KJR-FM sounds bizarre NOW........

*Not to say these guys don't enjoy holiday music. But their hardcore fans may have serious problems making that mental transition.......

... though Bob HAS done those Twisted Xmas albums!!

I have become so cynical I don't even look for a strategy on Clear Channel moves. I look for the BALANCE SHEET motivation. In my mind, the station could have a 40 share and they would flip some part of it if it meant moving out a PD who is overpaid, leveraging tracks from another market, simulcasting, using generic imaging (like "Oldies ##.#") or whatever. I don't look for a move based on "format hole" or "audience identification", etc. as I think they really stopped caring about those things years ago.

No reflection on the talent choice being discussed on this thread hiring market vet's is great ... but ANY move happening right now I would think is PD-du-jour tweaking something so it feels like he owns SOMETHING on the station he is tasked with leading. I no longer know if it's "95.7" or "Oldies Seattle" or "the Bob Rivers station" as the imaging has changed so many times since right after Xmas. Unfortunately, I no longer care because I know if I invest any connection to a facet of the programming ... it could be gone tomorrow.

We once compared radio management to Costco management ... now I'm going to draw on Costco inventory analogy. You can find a great deal there ... you just don't know if they will be stocking the same merchandise on your next visit. Same deal with the 95.7 frequency.

Oh god. They threw the baby out with the bath water. Let me ask you this.......why are they referring to the station as "95.7"? Why does it say on my HD radio "Classic Rock" when tuned to this frequency? Can you explain that?

I'm listening this morning and nearly everybody that is calling in is male, about 52 years old. I guess that's gonna be their P1.

I believe this is strategic. Get rid of their call letters and reimage and re-format the station. Then KJR resurfaces on 104.5 as Sports Radio.

They are doing at good job this morning at KJR FM.. even FM Steve is listening

Yeah......listening to this train wreck, I can't help it.

FM Steve, I couldnt have said it better myself..Their IS a serious absense of new blood and motivation in this market. It's been that way for some time. And, that's the reason stations have a tendency to go to "what works", and Steve and Bob etal work. Except for perhaps the "Radio for Guys" bit, much in the on-air personality catagory thats been tried out in the last 10 years has not stuck. It's been proven nearly every place they work that the gray beards still have somthing significant to offer to the bottom line. They attract the audience that buys the high end ticket items and those are the advertisers that pay the bills and YOUR paycheck... Their's a good reason that so many stations have basically gone to more rock no talk formats, and your opinion spells it out very well..I think the shock-jock format pretty much burned out any innovation. What's left to try in the P.S. market? We've mostly gone full circle...back to time and temp, traffic reports by young screechy girls and news breaks at the top and bottom..

KJR FM HD has used Classic Rock as the format identifier since the HD was installed years ago. there is no choice for classic hits and at the time someone else (97.3) was using the "oldies" moniker so that was not a good choice.

Don't read too much into that, nobody has paid attention to that detail in YEARS!

KMPS, The Wolf, The End, KISW, KUBE. Those are all stations who got new morning shows over the past 10 years, and have hung around for awhile.

Every market has their hits and misses. Plenty of flops such as Howard Hoffman, Arnie Rob & Dawn and Bryan Johnson in the market. But like it was yesterday, I remember people saying that Bob Rivers would never be able to bring his east coast shtick from Baltimore and make it work in Seattle. Same thing was said about Kent & Alan when they made it here from Portland.
