Steve & Vikki to Join B98.5

It's true...starting on July 1. It was just announced to the station staff.

It's hard to believe Bob Neil is willing to deviate from the little-talk, more-music format, but he is.

I'm still a little stunned.

Will they be doing overnights or replacing Delilah in the evening? There is no way they will replace K&A. Say it ain't so.

Well let the AC games begin. No wait, Star 94 is no longer AC. The winner in revenue and adult demos is B98.5.

Hey Mark and Dan, the name "Morning Mess" has turned out to be prophetic.

Bob Neil sends sincere thanks for spending millions to make his new morning team an established brand.

Do we think Vickki's reason for leaving STAR holds up NOW? Some of us do not.

What you're saying is true, but Star 94 was in a bind. Star trying to be a CHR station appealing to a slightly older demos has paid big dividends over the year. But now that Star has competition coming at them from the younger end, attempting to be a state-of-the-art CHR but appeal to slightly older people has become much more of a challenge.

And while Star did hand a legendary show to B98.5, I don't think Star had much of a choice but to cut bait. They didn't want their audience getting a lot older than their (women) 25-44 target audience.

Personally, I think the Morning Mess is a good show, but it's a CHR show and drastically different from S&V. The younger morning show, new hot imaging and jingles, same older-skewing playlist...hard to say how they'll do.

Steve & Vikki are a great fit for B98.5. And they'll probably help B98.5 discourage any possible format flips of other stations to AC.

This board has certainly done its share of beating up on Steve & Vikki over the years, but anyone who's an armchair radio strategist, despite their personal tastes, has to admit this is a glove-like fit for them, for their audience and for B98...one that's going to last very profitably for years and years.

The other companies that left the upper demos sitting by the side of the road have no one to blame but their slumbering selves.

I never believed it for a second. If you have a medical condition and quitting your job will help you get better , do you wait another 5 - 6 months. If Star wanted them to stay I am sure they would have gladly given Vikki 6 - 8 weeks off. I am not denying her medical condition just it as the justification for her leaving. Star had to figure though that someone was going to snap them up this summer.

The jury is still out on what they will be allowed to do. K & A were a very different morning show when they were in Colorado. Let's wait and hear what happens.

This should be the real thread topic: When is STAR 94 going to change formats?

They seem pretty S.O.L. since:
- Q100 shot up to 100,000 watts with a powerhouse of a morning show
- the "Morning Mess" is truely proving to be a mess
- they let B98.5 take their biggest asset out from under them...

Yea, Star could definitely be in some big trouble. They should flip to active/classic rock so we can see more crying from the 7 99x mourners in ATL all on this board! I keed I keed

This is kind of a surprise...Although Cox has been taking risks at the station over the past year.

I wish Kelly and Alpha the very best of luck in their future endevors. I am surprised they will be allowed to stay on the air until the end (especially since Cox pulled the personalities off the air when they flipped Fox 97 to Jamz in 2003).
------------

When Steve and Vikki was at Star 94, they played 6 songs an hour. I suspect music will be a part of the show. The only difference would be no more 98@9 (Commercial free block), with the normal music sets (12/hour) beginning at 10 AM when Jordan Graye takes over.

What format changes Cox will make to the station also is unclear. There is no incentive to change, but B98.5 might go more in the hot AC direction (maybe even a full flip to hot AC), even putting in more currents to get the old Star 94 audience. That could leave the door open to another AC (or hot AC).

I suspected all along Steve and Vikki were fired from Star 94 under competive pressures (not only with Q100, but with the now called off sale of the station by Lincoln Financial). They are a good fit with the B98.5 audience, unlike at Star where they were a 25-54 show on an 18-34 station.

We will just have to wait and see what happens.

I don't see any reason for them to flip, they already have better ratings than Star, what good would it do to be more like them? Steve and Vicki were getting too old for the Star crowd and they wanted to get younger. Now their age can be useful, since B98 targets slightly older women than Star does anyway.

Q has to love this. Not only do they have the more powerful signal now, but Star fans who stayed around to listen to Cindy and Ray might get pulled over to B98 now. It may not be long before Q100 takes them in the ratings as well..

Let's attempt to set the record straight here guys....

1.] Vicki was ill. She had a potentially deadly problem that required treatment over a period of several months and during that
time anything could have happened. She has a clean bill of health and needs a little more time to get herself back on go to get
up and start competing. STAR did not fire her.

2.] The demo was aging at Star, but they could have evolved into a little younger music and not lost a lot of the demo that was
aging. To lower the demo, Star has made a HUGE mistake. The $$$ demo is female 25-54. Which side of that demo you choose
to pick is vitally important to successful billings. The 25-30(34) is a tough and less loyal demo segment, who will still tend to listen to other stations than Star even after what they have evolved into. Personally, I am glad I ain't one the morons that have allowed a once proud 100kw station to flush their revenues and image down the toilet in such a short time. Certainly, the MM cannot fill the shoes of S &V, not many (if anyone)
could. To put your trust in an untried morning show, after trashing out one of the most female friendly, high revenue making shows is
about as crazy as I have seen. Look at all the bad will! If they get the younger demo, perhaps, PERHAPS, Star will climb .5. Who cares. The revenues are not going to be as good. I wouldn't count on any better ratings.

3.] The fact that Crumulus actually cleared the fog out of their ---- eyes and saw a major opportunity to win and then got smart
and brought back a Rock station that should have never been blown up in favor of a format of the month is startling enough. That
Cox would boldly see a way to increase revenues 33%, freshen their format and increase their edge and keep competition at bay
is exactly what Lincoln Financial's mental giants assumed would never happen. AC is the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. What a powerhouse
this will be.

STAR has blinked, their eyeball has stuck and their going down. The Morning Mess is old news, forgotten in the shuffle and the
old guard C-corps have actually made some bright decisions despite themselves.

What is left at Star? Wait til the afternoon show goes, the music gets stale and predictable and the blame game costs everybody
their jobs that didn't make the real decision to ruin Star.

The good news, there's always Dave FM to keep them from being at the very bottom of the food chain.

What is Star going to do right and when???

I've got a great idea. Add S&V to the AM and K&A to the PM and run Cindy & Ray, and thus Star 94, right out of business!

Wow, and if Kelly McCoy moves to middays under your scenario ... B98.5 would have two personalities with "Kelly" as their first names, and two with "McCoy" as their last names!

Maybe they could have a wedding and no one woul dhave to change their names. The least they could do would be
to put them all on the air from 9-5 and play no more than three songs.
