STOCK OUT AT KXNT

I had hoped that the new PD at KXNT would make some programming moves, but ditching Alan Stock wasn't what I expected. Stock was quoted in Norm's article as saying that the new mangement wants to "change the direction of the station"...does that mean a format flip?

I hope Alan finds a new home on Vegas radio and I wish him the best of luck.

Sean Hannity made a refrence to this on his show today. When he got a call from Las Vegas he asked "What happened to my buddy Alan Stock?"

What do you flip a 50kw AM to? Other than talk and sports, nothing else works on AM. (OK, black gospel works on AM too, but there's not enough audience for that in Vegas).

Where's Alan Stock going to go? There's so little local talk radio in Las Vegas! Heidi Harris does local in the morning at KDWN and I doubt she's going anywhere. Unless CC has plans for 95.5?

What does CBS want to do with KXNT AM and FM? ???

Time-brokered works but I can't see CBS doing that. Maybe they should quit the simulcast. Keep the AM talk and go back to music on the FM since being on FM hasn't helped the talk ratings.

It's not so much what band talk is on as it is the programming. Well done news/talk works on FM as has been proven in other markets. :)

I thought about Alan Stock going to KDWN AM 720. Give me a chance to explain. KDWN no longer carries Glenn Beck, after he left Fox and started his own network, on line. That leaves the 9 AM to Noon slot open. What has KDWN done? They now have the overnight Dennis Miller show on. Boring... He is so laid back and quiet, sounds as if he is smoking a reefer... I like his humor, but I doubt he will make any ratings, being on twice a day.
Heidi Harris used to work with Alan Stock together in the morning before she left for KDWN. It would seem a logical follow up show for KDWN. ALan could help the ratings of KDWN and hopefully kick KXNT's butt. He would be up against Rush, but again, I prefer local talk. He would have to swallow his pride, but if he needs a gig... I wonder if he has to sit out for a year, for a non-compete clause in his former contract?
Alan could go to AM 670, they now have a syndicated morning news show from Washington DC, on in drive time, competing with KXNTs news block. Problem is AM 670 is a weak signal. KDWN is 50,000 watts. Nobody really knows AM 670 exists.
KDWN could emphasize LIVE & Local talk. Heidi, Alan and followed by Jerry Doyle, who is syndicated, but based here in Las Vegas. Comments?

Comments? Did he ask for comments?

OK...Here's one, or a few....

Opportunities like the one provided to KDWN from KXNT happen so rarely because everyone loses....

  • KXNT loses because the 12 years of really well-done market equity simply vanishes.
  • Alan Stock loses because he now must start over at a new station, if one chooses to hire him...
  • And, the Las Vegas Listener loses because someone in the front office of the Big-Gun News/Talker in town believes the station can do better with something else.

When KXNT was NUMBER 1 in the market what, two years ago....? Many saw that as the culmination of years of hard work by an solid cast of professionals. The station featured a near-perfect blend of local and national talent...and with finally enough equity-time in the Listener's Mind, stood to become the Las Vegas version of KFI, WGN, WJR, KGO, etc....

Then Tom Humm left...Heidi Harris left...now Alan Stock is gone. Instead of seeing a future full of profits, KXNT management could only see the opportunity to take fewer profits in the present...a present that existed only for a moment...and in the world of "OK...how far will we drop our pants to make this month's budget..." that was ancient history, and evaporated into the mist of the next budget reality.

Speaking of the future, where's KXNT's future talent? Where's Casey & Heather? Gone long ago...to save money. Freelove & Olson? Buh-Bye. Same reason. Who's available in the free-agent market....No one less expensive than any of these people...but saving all that money sure did make for a fleeting entry on a management resume that moved that genius up the ladder...

Did they replace Heidi? No. They turned to the foolish ideal of a "...definitive Las Vegas News Block for Morning Drive"...a 3-hour excursion into illuminating a town that only generates 20-minutes of news per day.

"Let's see...4 people making 9-bucks an hour for 40 hours is....Heidi Harris made....MORE!! That IT!! (Echo...echo....echo....)

Has it ever worked? No...but made for a fleeting entry on a management resume that moved that genius up the lad...Wait...Where's Agnew? Landreth? Spittle?

"My decision to go with Agnew was perfect!! It's these dumb Las Vegans....These idiot rubes just can't appreciate real news radio!! That's IT!!" (Echo...echo....echo....)

"My decision to blow out Landreth was perfect!! He was hard to deal with! The staff hated him! And...after he got the station to Number 1...The company owed him a FORTUNE IN PERFORMANCE BONU...Uh....Wait!! The staff hated him!! That's IT!!" (Echo...echo....echo....)

"News/Talk just won't work in Las Vegas....Is Alan Gray still in Radio? Where's that Cruisin' Oldies thing...? That was CHEAP!!" (Echo...echo....echo....)

(OK...Enough.)

This leaves the entire Las Vegas News/Talk market in the hands of KDWN...Last I heard, they were planning to sell brokered-time in the middle of the day, Monday through Friday. They already blew off Glenn Beck. Why? Lousy ratings....OK.

Worse than....Purity Products' Ultimate Prostate Formula?

(Again...OK...Sorry.)

So now...KDWN has the opportunity to reconstitute most of the personnel from the former Number 1 Radio Station in town...In News/Talk, no less...and begin the process of acquiring the "future of profits" left on the table by the annointed members of the Sahara Avenue Echo Chamber...for roughly half the investment in time and money.

Seems like a no-brainer, huh? Not so fast....

"....How much are we paying Heidi? Alan would cost how much...? What was Bob Massey paying an hour at FOXNews 1280...? That's IT!!" (Echo...echo....echo....)

(OK I admit it...I can't help it....Listeners/my former neighbors...do mean more to me than working in....Las Vegas....radio.)

It's interesting, I pressed my INFO button on my car radio today, Wednesday 7/27/11, after 3 PM, and the Information display still says the Alan Stock Show. I pressed the button because I was wondering who it was that was on the air... I always thought somebody monitored the display information and it would be updated. I guess that it is pre-programmed and overlooked... I have also seen at the top of the hour break, the display flashes KXTE and then later it is corrected to say KXNT. Sloppy state of radio over at KXNT.

Afternoon drive on KXNT reminds me of mid-mornings at KDWN... Both seem to have gone the route of different talk show hosts every day. You don't know who will be behind the microphone. I wish these stations would make a decision and put somebody on that you can tune into and follow regularly. Under previous management, KXNT would say they had a contest and would be "auditioning talent" . How do they expect to have any ratings with a revolving door. I'll hit the music button on my radio, until they decide. :-\

I heard KLUC's Chet Buchanan was on KXNT afternoons. Any chance CBS would move him there?

I think cbs is looking for a younger demo.

I wonder if going from 3 hours to one hour against Limbaugh after brokered programming is a good career move?

Also, I guess that means he did not have a "non-compete?"

Kcbs does well in SF, Reno has a talk station that does well and in SOCAL. KFI does well. Vegas does not seem to do that well for news or talk radio. I noticed the KXNT google listing still shows "Alan Stock" , you would think they would take it down.

I did not understand the JD stuff, although maybe he is saying Vegas is not that good of a place for news talk radio and stations should understand that?

I thought the TV tie-ins had potential.

I did catch about 30 minutes of Chet on KXNT yesterday. He did a good job, kept it flowing and interesting.

He talked about politics, He mentioned that the KXNT audience is much more informed than the general population who make political decisions based on image, looks, and marketing (was he thinking of the KLUC audience lol). That was a good point. But I also got the impression that Chet himself is an apolitical guy, it's not a subject that especially interests him. But he's able to pull it off plus there are other topics to discuss.

As for Alan Stock, I'm glad he found another gig so quickly but one hour a day doesn't seem satisfying enough. Why not 9a-noon and go directiy against Rush? I guess KDWN is set on daily infomercials? I know it's easy money but still.

I wonder if Stock is buying the slot and getting his own sponsors? I believe he said his wife was in Real Estate and I assume he owns a home, probably does not make sense to move to another market at his stage in life.

Much of talk radio seems pretty negative and gloomy. The world is going to end because of Harry Reid and Obama, so I think I'll go out and buy a car and then go out for dinner and a show? or buy a house? doesn't make sense. If things are so bad why buy anything? except food?
