Well I would ask people why they like it so much. I honestly have listened to the entire One Republic CD and regret buying it. There are lots of other songs that would do so much better if they were just played more often. What about Gavin Rossdale's "Love Remains The Same"? Metro Station's "Shake It"? Those are just two examples.
Once again, you are not in the demo and your likes and dislikes are irrelevant when it comes to Hot AC. Flawed or not, the research shows that the women who prefer the Hot AC format like Stop & Stare, a lot. The Gavin Rossdale song has been taking a while to callout...if it breaks top 10, I doubt a lot of stations will power it. Metro Station is anotherone of those polarizing songs, it sounds young for for some Hot AC's and good for others.
And this is one of the larger problems facing Hot AC as a format today. There is very little "middle ground" music lately which was the meat and potatoes of the Hot AC format for so long. We end up with many "polaring" songs, as you put it, which makes programming the format somewhat difficult. People just don't seem to take to that middle-of-the-road kind of new music anymore...and that is substantiated by the fact that most PD's lists of HAC "core artists" still include bands like Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty (pre-2007), Sarah McLachlan, and the like. There have been very few acts to add to that list since about 2003.
Music is somewhat cyclical in overall style, and the current popularity of synthesized urban/dance music in the Top 40 world is not unlike the surge in popularity of synth beats in the 80's. We will see it come back around for Hot AC, we just have to give it time.
