Stop the presses: WXRV fires yet another PD

Music selection is being outsourced to an outside consulting group.

Reduce costs even more, try something radical - allow the on-air talent to select the music.

That's what nearly killed the radio business fifty years ago, and did manage to kill the careers of some very highly paid air talent. It's not going to be tried again on any station that cares about keeping its license.

Given the new threat to music radio listening from iPods and the like, I think the idea of talent selecting their own music is worth revisiting, but (1) everyone would need to be on the same page, and (2) the talent would have to be truly talented.

I do think music radio needs to get back to its show business roots if it is to compete effectively going forward.

They'd also need to be paid well enough to make the idea of payola unthinkable. I think that's what the thing that "nearly killed the radio business" is supposed to refer to, not just jocks playing their own favorite tunes.

You also don't have to allow them FULL control. You can schedule slots where the DJ picks a track or two within the parameters of your library, which allows for some variation but keeps the overall format consistant. Some stations still do this once or twice an hour, and it's a great fit for AAA if you've got good air talent.
