Storm Coverage

I noticed that someone had posted a take in another thread but thought this topic was worthy of its own thread:

Who won? Who lost?

I thought Joe K. did a really good job as did the KRMG news team.  Over the last two weeks I have become more of a fan.  He was solid.
BUT, when they decided to extend programming after 6pm it was like Karaoke.  I wanted to sign up for a shift.  Todd did a super job on overnights but dear God there was some bad radio in between.

From what I heard KFAQ did a good job of playing off the passion from the botched work in the neighborhood.  In other words politicizing it instead of providing information.  To a certain degree it is really smart... you know you lose the news battle, so go after the talk audience.

Didn't notice too many signal issues so kudo's to all the engineers.  Last Tuesday was an absolute wash and I was amazed that some shows were actually on the air.

The Tulsa coverage was so much better than OKC. KRMG sounded very good. KFAQ just was okay. BUT...KFAQ was better than anything in OKC!

Yup. In many cares, it's best to listen through a bit of static to 740 than rely on no-one's-home 1000 or 1520 here in OKC. There's still one real news radio station in Oklahoma. That's KRMG.

Sorry. KFAQ sucks. Period. Where is the news staff there? There isn't any. KRMG does great. Kudos to Ch. 6.

KFAQ is a lost cause. Michael DelGiorno built the station and backed it up with Fox News. Both are gone. If you don't have Rush and Hannity, you don't stand a chance either. Being stuck on AM is also killing them. KFAQ had their 15 minutes and it ended.

KOTV did a great job during the storm too. All you heard during the two big storms was KRMG and KOTV. I noticed that all the Cox stations were all promoting KRMG and Travis Meyer too. That is a lot of signals promoting the same thing. Maybe KOTV or Cox should buy the TULSA WORLD?

I'm no KFAQ apologist, but I highly disagree with this. Being a historic 50,000 watt blowtorch can never be a negative. Most people who listen to talk radio listen to an AM frequency, even if an FM simulcast is available.

It is a 50,000 watt blowtorch and a tremendous waste of a great signal. I miss the old KVOO-AM. It had great news too. They should have left it THE VOICE OF OKLAHOMA. Anyone under the age of 45 does not use AM radio unless it is the only option to get talk programming or news. If it is on the FM band, they will go there. Now with few options on the AM band in Tulsa, most people never hit the AM/FM button on their radio. Plus, most new car radios have horrible AM tuners. Don't mean to bash them, but they are backed into a corner. There is KFAQ and a few lame sports stations on AM. Like a bad strip mall in a bad part of town. I am not shopping there for any reason.

Too bad Milwaukee didn't leave the classic country station, that was doing JUST FINE on AM alone and start a new talk station KFAQ on the FM on 99.5. In mono, 99.5 would be kick-butt and allow listenership within offices where KFAQ needs the help. The old country guys had their dials rusted on 1170. They could have went years and years before seeing too much errosion. And, if they were really bright they'd get an FM translator for the AM to supliment the 50k signal. Noise these days is a killer for AM, regardless of the station's power level.
