streaming player built into website

Nay, for two reasons:

#1 - Listeners at work or listeners in the middle of the night at home with their speakers turned all the way up will NOT thank you when your page loads and either the boss yells at them or the baby starts crying from the other room.

#2 - If it's on your domain, YOU are paying the royalty fees: ASCAP, BMI, SESAC & SoundExchange. Even if it's a stream of a broadcast station already paying, you have to pay AGAIN for the web stream (and the rates are different, so it's not just like sending two checks).

My recommendation? Get an attorney familiar with audio streaming law; he can keep you from digging yourself a deep financial hole.

I look at a lot of station websites. It is obvious that there are many different philosophies at work as to what we expect a website to do, what we expect a website to be.

If you are a music-centered station reaching a very enthusiastic audience for certain genres of music, and the website's only purpose is to grow and make loyal that audience, then having the music automatically streaming makes a lot of sense.

If your station management assumes that one of the purposes of a station website is to make the station visible to ad agencies and public relations folks scheduling tours by people to be interviewed about their new book, automatic music may not be appropriate.

If your station management assumes that new merchants and retail managers just moved to town by their company want to look up various local stations and evaluate them for advertising purposes, automatic music may not be appropriate.

If your station focuses on local news coverage and takes the posture: We are a bit more mature than the other stations which a just jukeboxes, automatic music may not be appropriate.

Having the streaming player built in and automatically play when you log onto homepage for a radio station.

yay or nay?

If you are a control freak - YAY.

If you have any respect for your listeners - NAY.
