Streets, 96.5 urban pirate station

Does anyone know anything about this pirate? They play hip, hop and come in very strong on the westside of Manhattan from downtown to Inwood.
I believe they're out of NJ but bill themselves as a New York station.
They have spots with Wendy Williams and info. on local concerts/clubs, etc...

I heard them the other night with a very strong signal in Fort Lee, NJ, near the GWB. No success in getting them in Queens though.

I have heard a spanish-language pirate on 94.5, which was especially easy to get for a couple of days when WFME was off the air on 94.7.

I think I heard this once When I used to live in Elizabeth NJ.I think it's off and on(Since it's a Pirate) but when it's on it Plays Uncensored hip-hop. I think it has a different Format Depending on which day you hear it.

I'm in NY for a weekend next month. Given that I'm involved in some pirate activity hear in the UK, I'd love to check out how its done in the big apple!

Any particulat frequencies to keep an ear on?

agreed...very strong signal near Fort Lee and the GWB but their signal travels far beyond that.
I had at first mistaken them for Wired, 96.5 out of Philadelphia until the clarity of their signal was far superior to what Wired could have possibly been.

Locally Brooklyn would be your best location as far as hearing pirates. Most New York pirates tend to be ethnically based with the most prominent being caribbean/urban programming. Many of the pirates are on again off again and Brooklyn has by far got the most pirates I've ever heard in this country. The FCC seems to be almost non existant in Brooklyn......
That being said perhaps some other posters could give us some help with a general list of local pirates...
I know I saw a list on this board once upon a time.
If not, go to Brooklyn and move slowly up and down the dial, especially late evenings...you will hear at least 4.

Off the top of my head:

87.9
88.1
89.3
89.7
90.1
90.5
90.9
91.9
94.3
94.5
95.1
95.9
96.5
96.7
97.5
99.9
101.5
102.3
103.1
103.9
104.7
106.3
107.9
Most of these seem to come out of Brooklyn, with a few from the Bronx or New Jersey. They don't cover the whole city, though some (especially 95.1, it seems) put out quite a signal regardless. They've chosen frequencies that are either first-adjacent to licensed stations, sometimes broadcasting right on top of the IBOC hash of some stations, while others broadcast on second-adjacent frequencies to licensed NYC stations, on the same frequency as suburban stations which would otherwise have a poor to moderate signal in parts of NYC. Most of them don't broadcast 24-7 either.

On Long Island, I also know of 100.9 and 89.3 in Central Suffolk County, those do seem to broadcast 24-7, both with rock music and fairly large coverage areas.

Out of curiosity how did you remember all of them and would you know their monkiers and formats?

Heh, I take notes more than anything, and I like to play with my car radio. I don't pay enough attention to them to wait around for station IDs or anything of the sort though, but I believe many of them have websites and toll-free numbers. I think the one on 95.1 is called Caribbean Power and the one on 104.7 is Fire 104.7. 106.3 used to be Royal Radio but I don't know what they are now, they seemed to be off the air for a while.

There's also the station on 87.75 which is actually the audio of Channel 6 VHF, a tv station except that the audio and video portions are split, so 87.75 is basically a stand-alone radio station, broadcasting in Russian 24-7. They even have dance mixshows on weekend evenings ;)

The Streets is a new station and I think they are out of Newark. They are getting a lot of support but they are a spin-off from what I now of another NJ station Roadblock Radio which is 90.3. The Streets plays a bit of everything Hip Hop, Reggae, Dancehall, Club, R&B, and unsigned artist which is real big in my opinion.

although I'm not a fan of their genre I like pirates for that particular reason, their ability to think outside the box and giving unknown artists airtime.
seriously...more power to them.

I believe 87.7 is a real station that was allowed to come on the air. It's really really powerful in the Newark Area

87.75 is a real television station that was allowed to come on air. It's the audio carrier of Channel 6 VHF. The interesting thing is that the audio and video carriers are aired separately...if you manage to get Channel 6's over-the-air TV signal, which seems to be much weaker and more directional than the audio signal, you either see test bars or infomercials while hearing the same audio that you hear in a radio on 87.7 (87.75 to be exact).

87.7 gets out pretty far...covering all five boroughs, Nassau county, lower Westchester and much of Northern NJ. They're FCC licensed but as a television station.

They do air some interesting dance mixshows on Saturday and Sunday nights, commercial-free, for dance fans.

yes they do....dance, in Russian. It is a Russian station.

Yes, I know they are a Russian station.

However, I have heard them also playing non-Russian dance music on some of those mixshows. A lot of stuff without vocals/lyrics of any kind.

I've heard some dance shows w/out lyrics, etc. but since they are a Russian Station I always assumed it was Russian based dance.
That being said with the demize of WKTU I suppose in reality they are New York's only dance station....Russian or not.

I can hear 87.7 pretty good, but I can't recieve the television station at all. I can hear 96.5 pretty clear from my home in Bloomfield, NJ. I don't like rap, but I was impressed with the audio output, it didn't sound bad at all.

I believe 91.9 is still "Promo Radio". They actually sell airtime.

Heard 96.5 with a fair signal at EWR last night - sounded very good.

Tried recording a minidisc worth but it didnt pan out. Shame :(
