Strong May for WEEI

Re: Boston Arbitron Radio Ratings: May 2012

http://www.radio-info.com/markets/boston

Publicly released age 6+ overall rankings for the May 2012 survey period covering Thu. 4/26/12 - Wed. 5/23/12.

The next survey period will be for June 2012 covering Thu. 5/24/12 - Wed. 6/20/12 with the report release date being Wed. 7/11/12.

Mark of BRW noted it wasn't so much that WEEI rose (maybe a little bit) but Sports Hub..fell. Comments to Globe story mention it

It must have killed Chad the Sports Hub cheerleader to write that article. And now I know why we haven't heard from kalendar.

What leaps out at me is the cume numbers where EEI is showing a lead of 300K.

I would think that is Red Sox play by play driven as there are still many who would never listen to sports radio but will listen to a baseball game. But WRKO did not show a spike on days they carried the Sox on overflow so maybe not. That said I still think baseball and football are much bigger radio properties than hockey and basketball.

EEI did not have the option under Arbitron rules to put the Sox on 850 when the Celts were playing as to have both 93.7/850 to be reported as one signal it must be 100% simulcast.

Felger's bashing of the Celtics didn't help either. WEEI made the same mistake with the Bruins for years and it burnt them last spring but Glenn bringing Jack Edwards in appeased the hockey crowd.

its the Celtics plain and simple the sports hub will be back where they belong next ratings period!!

That argument would have more credibility if WEEI had seen a large gain and WBZ-FM had seen a large loss... Instead, WBZ-FM just saw a loss and WEEI held its ground.

Most of the Sox and Celtics games are played at night. The ratings show 'EEI leading during the daytime shows (I still maintain that T&R isn't a sports show) along with evenings. Why are the games given as the main reason?

As far as being condescending to callers, I think that if you are one of the weirdos that call radio shows that you are fair game. I cannot imagine being anthing but condescending to Danny from Quincy or Steve from Fall River or Tony from Bridgewater or a dozen more of the usual suspects. I find it entertaining when they get humiliated. How many times has Steve from Fall River been blown up? Yet he keeps calling back, doesn't he?

EEI's cume is 300K higher which I am guessing is game related. (Red Sox )

I'm not sure I know what "cume" means, but until now the winner in the ratings as reported by Chad Finn and someone named kalendar has been 98.5 based on the show by show ratings. I don't see how that the games affect the shows. I don't listen to Celtics games because I usually watch and I can't stand Grande and Quack-Quack, but I listen to the talk on WEEI. I don't listen to 98.5 shows during football season just because the game is broadcast there. I listen to quite a few Sox games, but I would no matter what station they were on. It has no effect on the talk shows I listen to.

On the other hand, the Bruins helped 98.5 because they won for the first time in 40 years and 'EEI had always ignored them. All of the people who jumped on the bandwagon flocked to 98.5 because they talked about them. 'EEI also removed their most knowledgeable hockey guy and replaced him with a nerd at the same time............the perfect storm. I suspect that 98.5 dropped in ratings because the Bruins are becoming irrelevant again and 98.5 are no longer the new kids in town. It won't be long before people hate them as much as they once hated WEEI. From what I read on other message boards, Felger is becoming the DB again, where he was once admired.

Cume means cumulative right? Added up thru the week etc.

Cume Persons
The total number of different persons who tune to a radio station during the course of a daypart for at least five minutes.

If the games are doing well, it's good for the shows through content, guests and overall excitement/interest in that team, I would imagine.

I agree that the performance of the teams affects overall interest in sports radio, but why one show over the other? I think the shows rise and fall on their own merit/shortcomings. Total listenership may go up or down, depending on which station is broadcasting the games in season, but most football games are on weekends or nights and the other three sports are primarily at night. The games themselves shouldn't affect the shows from 6:00 AM to 6:00PM.

Looks to me like market-wide, CBS has a 13 share, maybe more, among adult men. Still, EEI had to get better after they snatched the reigns away from McCann.
