SUMMER 07 RATINGS

Who HEARS these HD2 stations?? Berlin, if you listen, how 'bout a rundown of what's out there? I have not heard one of the HD2 channels anyplace. The folks at the local Best Buy/Circuit City have never even heard of HD radio!!! Go try it and see the response you get.

I'm with you Sniff..Nobody has any idea what HD radio is. There are none available and I don't think anyone would buy them in the Triad if they would..Smells of AM Stereo..What a bomb that was...Back in the Day, When CD's came out..We would say.. "From the Q-CD>< here's Blah Blah Blah..and all the time it was straight from cart.. Nobody in the world could tell the difference between a cart and the CD on Air!..and I'll argue that point 'til the Cows come Home!!!.

I spun the wheel and it landed on Top 40. I think 105.7 will attempt to go after 107.5 KZL. Before they do this they better get some local announcers and get out into the public and be seen.

I'm with ya JStone! I think Entercom has the Urban market wrapped up. I heard Brent Milar say that CC would never beat him in the Urban arena because they are living, eating, and breathing urban at Entercom. They're all over the streets, etc. CC doesn't have a chance in that arena. BUT...somebody needs to go after KZL. They're sitting there all fat and happy. It wouldn't conflict with any of CC's other stations, either. With WMAG, they're reaching the older females, MKS could reach out and grab the younger ones (no pun intended). Lots of $$$ there. But, then again, not sure CC would make a decision that smart. Think about it, KZL and JAMZ are the only two stations playing young contemporary music in the market (unless you want to count Country in that category). The Beat was actually making some headway. I know several women in the 25-34 age group that loved that station. The signal just sucked. They need some personalities, then go back after that market.

HD Offerings

Here's a breakdown of the HD-only offerings that I've been able to hear on my Accurian. With this brand, you have to have a strong signal to get the HD broadcasts. Word is that the other CC stations will fire up HD when they relocate to their respective new transmitter sites (WDCG and WKSL in Apex, WRDU at the Garner Antenna Farm, I think). All the Radio One stations save for WQOK (which is moving from Berea to the WFXC tower in Durham) are broadcasting in HD, only without HD sub channels; the same is true for local non-comms WSHA, WNCU and WUNC. NC State's WKNC was supposed to be firing up HD in the near future according to a thread a while back. None of the Curtis stations are broadcasting in HD and press indicates they won't do so anytime soon.

Raleigh-Durham

WCMC-HD2- Classic Rock (this used to be Positive Country-formatted)
WRVA-HD2- Underground
WRAL-HD2- Adult Album Alternative

Greensboro (the ones I've been able to receive anyway)

WPAW-HD2- Oldies..only received it once
WMAG-HD2- Smooth Jazz
WVBZ-HD2- Classic Rock
WJMH-HD2- Old School Rap

Nah, it was more than the signal that killed The Beat. The personalities were too restricted and the music mix didn't fit the market. The only headway they were making was against KZL. As was pointed out, Jamz completely laid The Beat out. Go back and look at the ratings... they reflect that.

But I do agree with you that WMKS should go against WKZL. It's unfortunate how lax 107-5 has become, but they're at a point now where they're ripe for some competition. There was a time that I considered them one of the best CHR's in the country. Today, they're nowhere near that list. If there's one format Cheap Channel has proven they can at least put some effort into and make work, it's CHR. WMKS already has the calls and the name, it just needs the format. If they do it, and they do it strongly, they can overtake KZL in short order.

I don't understand how anybody could have never heard of HD radio. I hear the commercials all the time on the radio--- not just the ones for HD Radio tuners themselves, which are offered at places like Best Buy, but also carmakers like BMW, GM, and Ford are jumping on the bandwagon, offering HD radios in their cars. On many, if not all, of the CC stations in the area, they run an HD-radio commercial as the last one before returning to the music. Some of the channels may not yet be online, but there are channels out there, and in some cases--- mainly on stations who stream the main channel online, such as CC stations and the two Capitol stations here (I don't know about 99.9 since the formats of both channels changed, but WRAL I know does)--- the HD2 channels stream online as well as the primary channels. On the websites of CC stations that stream multiple channels, links will usually direct you to the channel you want to stream, be it the regular station or the HD2 channel.

quoting Berlin...

Because stations advertise the "technology" and not the "content". Maybe a KISS listener would be compelled to buy an HD radio if they advertised that KISS HD2 featured current Dance music (just an example).

Most people think their radio works fine. They haven't been told about specific formats, in their town, that they're missing on HD. It would be like a car dealership saying, "come here because we have cars".

Radio does a bad job advertising itself.

There aren't many "A" students left in the radio business, even at the top.

The issue isn't even listeners knowing/giving a hoot about HD radio, it's the retailers. They don't know that they have them on the shelves!

It doesn't take an "A student" to see the problem with that, and it ain't radio's fault.

JStone - If CC has done this format successfully in other parts of the country, you can count on the fact that they're considering it right now. There's nothing they love better than to duplicate the identity of a successful station in another market and I have no doubt that they are looking at the Miller Kaplans and thinking this would be a good move. My guess is they "might" give WMKS one more book then it's guillotine time! I never thought the moniker "Kiss" fit this format. Much better for a CHR. Won't it be ironic to have a "Kiss" CHR again in the Triad along with 94.1's "Majic".

HD radio? Yep- just exactly what the industry needs...a whole new generation of voicetracked ho-hum jukeboxes (but wait!- these are DIGITAL voicetracked ho-hum jukeboxes!) ...yawn...

Has anyone considered or given thought to the programming genius of Bruce Logan? An unbelievable mind at work looking at the available points of entry and the potential angles. I'm especially in awe of Rooster, hopefully no one has broken the mold.

That would be nice to see Kiss as a CHR station along with Majic and in addition to that I wish 97.1 WQMG would bring back Power 97. They dropped it years ago but people still call WQMG Power 97. I think it is a really cool name.

I completely agree. Whenever I mention that station it's always as Power 97. A great moniker that they should not completely abandon. I still can't bring myself to call 94.1 Majic. Everyone I know still thinks of 99.5 as Magic. It's just way too confusing!

By the way, going back a ways to a post I apparently missed, as long as I get production director duties, I'm on board for the CHR flip of WMKS!

Said, I wouldn't do this but...Neither one of them are "MAGIC"! BIG APE! and I mean BIG!

HD radio will go the way of AM stereo and Beta . It doesn't generate revenue, and there's presently no way to measure audience. PLUS, it's not creating jobs. So what's the purpose????
