Only you guys could get so off topic that the administrator would move the post to off air.

This is a Pittsburugh radio board gentlemen. Nobody cares about your opinions of what polka music should or shouldn't be called.

"This is a Pittsburugh radio board gentlemen."

And you're proud to own a station in Tennessee. So what?

"Nobody cares about your opinions of what polka music should or shouldn't be called."

It is that narrow minded lack of vision and unwillingness to pursue discussions where they may go that typifies why radio in Pittsburgh is so bad. The only reason why any station in Pittsburgh succeeds is that it only has to be better than the other Pittsburgh radio stations. That's not difficult.

Lash worked in Pittsburgh on the air for a while as I recall; occasionally right after me on Saturdays and Sundays.

He's a good guy and knows a lot about radio.

Just take a deep breath and relax.

Realist. Try and stay on topic! While we would like to reinvent the wheel, its not going to happen. Yeah, I'm proud to have worked at home in Pittsburgh. And yes I'm proud of the station and newspaper we own in Tennessee. Why? Because without the corporate BS, I can TRY and reinvent radio. We do what works, and try new things as well.

Thanks Parttimer, appreciate the post!

If Mr. Lash owns one station in Tennessee, then that's at least one more than you, Mr. Realist. Why must every message from you contain a cheap shot at someone else's qualifications?

Yes, the only reason why "any station in Pittsburgh succeeds" is because it is better than the other Pittsburgh radio stations. Welcome to capitalism! The only reason that any business succeeds is that it is better than its competitors. To quote a punchline from a famous joke: "I don't have to run faster than the lion. I just have to run faster than you."

Also: Before the discussion was moved, you were discoursing on the "Ibo, Bantu, Tutsi, (and) Zulu" tribes of Africa and "Negroes" (to use your word). How do you reach the conclusion that "the unwillingness to pursue" such a discussion "typifies why radio in Pittsburgh is so bad"?

It typifies no such thing --- the discussion was irrelevant! Any businessman who insists upon "pursuing" irrelevant discussions instead of focusing on actual trends and issues in his industry will have plenty of time to "pursue" those discussions from a pub stool or at the labour exchange once he's made redundant.

Not to mention the fact that "Negro" hasn't been in general circulation since President Lyndon Johnson left office, and I suspect if I tried using that term in Pittsburgh or any other American city, I'd get a right punch up the head, "political correctness" be d--ned.

Eventually these threads get to a point I can't follow them anymore and I don't feel like I'm missing anything when they do- but I think I can answer a question here.

In response to "Why does Realist take cheap shots at everyone?"- Realist has never taken a cheap shot at me- nor I to him.

And that's something you might want to remember. If you want to be respected- try treating people with respect.

It's well known 99.9% of Pittsburgh media needs immediate transport to a boarding charm school for intense, intense study.

I am sure I am in this list as well.

Incidentily, Lash, what newspaper do you own in Tennessee? Are you planning on endorsing anyone in the Corker-Ford race?

The Advisor in Wayne County, TN. And we've endorsed Harold Ford Jr.

He's interviewed on the station many times, and is very sharp.

Who's spending more on radio in PA, Casey or Santorium?

"Only you guys could get so off topic that the administrator would move the post to off air."

Actually, the administrator has such a hair-trigger mentality that getting any thread closed or moved that strays even the tiniest little bit off topic often happens for no discernible reason at all. Posts in here are supposed to be like Top 40 radio. No in-depth discussions, just stick to skimming the surface. No comments that wouldn't get high approval ratings in auditorium testing. And never say anything that would evoke strong emotional responses.

Just keep it light and bubbly. Keep it a mile wide and an inch deep. Post nothing that can't be read in less than 10 seconds, or peoples' attention will wander.

And if you do respond (especially if pretending to be a Brit), take what others say totally out of context and pretend you don't understand it. That always gets a chuckle from the gallery without contributing anything to the discussions. But then, this forum isn't about "discussion", is it? It's a place for lightweight happy talk.

In short, it's just like Pittsburgh radio.

PS. Better hurry up and read this. It won't be here long. It's funny, but one of the topics that the Administrator put on the top of the main page was about why so few people participate in here. Yet I'll wager he deletes or moves this post without any sort of response as soon as he reads it.

Darn it, you went and made me agree with you again! ;D

I'll ask again that posts stay on topic. This is supposed to be a discussion about Pittsburgh radio. More and more posts are veering widely offtopic.

With that said, Radiorealist raises a reasonable concern. It's a concern better raised on the Ask Radio-Info board. We try not to relocate whole threads unless a substantial number of them get off the discussion at hand. We're examining this policy more closely in an attempt to be responsive to our users. Keep in mind that the majority of users support our efforts to keep radio topics on track. We have an Off the Air board designed specifically to let non-radio topics have a place to call home. I'm trying to figure out why staying on topic is such a chore for some users.

Ditto for me, Chris. You're doing things down there that I've never even heard of...but they're terrific ideas. I hope you plan to buy more stations...we need more visionaries in the business who have a head for the business end, as well as programming. I'm still trying to find a backer for my own station ownership pursuits.

Casey's spending a lot on Radio...my experience tells me that Rick is spending much of his budget on TV.

Buying your own stations is the only way to really stay in this business.

We fully expect to grow again soon. Bringing another person to the radio and newspaper puzzle down from the north soon.

Recently we did a survey and with those results, we will be tweaking our format, and a new name etc. It won't be "Wilber" however. See other tread.

great endorsement choice, lash...that guy blows me away...i work at a station that targets men, and we are not running one single polital ad...none...its as if they just don't care what a 35 year old guy thinks, and have no desire to influence him in any way...first time i've seen it...
