>...I'll regret offering another sidetrack....

To paraphrase Hunter S. Thompason:

The radio business is a cruel and shallow money pit,
a long plastic hallway where good men die like dogs.
There's also a negative side.

And he (Thompson) saw fit to kill himself at the end of the ride.

I was [well—still am] a big Hunter S. Thompson fan. You couldn’t have found a better quote from his vast repository of pop-culture reflection to inject here.

Thanks littlejohn!

middlega... I enjoyed your last post (Reply #39) VERY MUCH. Many of the points you made give any open-minded radio person cause for self-reflection. I’d like to respond fully in time—but someone called and wants to “do lunch” ;)

And there's hardly a radio person in the world that'll turn down an opportunity to eat ;)

You know what might just "save" radio? Compelling content. Like the preceeding half dozen posts.

"Hippo Radio with HR and Middelga"

... I know *I* would listen.

(But only if they also played 4 to 6 titles an hour with a 12 minute/unit commercial limit and top and bottom of the hour news).

And could our six titles please at least include...

“Talk Talk” Music Machine
“Blue Money” Van Morrison
“Hypnotized” Fleetwood Mac
“I.G.Y. (International Geophysical Year)” Donald Fagen
“Hot Smoke and Sasafrass” Bubble Puppy
“Hallelujah” Sweathog

Now THOSE make for a break in “the action”—no bumpers required!

GOD I hope no PDs or consultants are reading this post :D

OK Hippo, you are now hired as morning co-host AND music director. Great music choices--load up Selector and pack your headphones. (And I *am* a pd and consultant!) ;D

Sounds like you’re proposing “Gen-X vs The Radio Geek” with assorted “garage” bands and cryptic titles for musical fill while the co-hosts catch their breath.

News every 30-minutes is OK too—but could we use the old ABC Contemporary News sounder to kick them off?

May I bring my back-issues of Mad Magazine and copy of Lampoon’s “Radio Dinner” (on vinyl of course) into the control room? I’d need an old Technics SP-10 turntable for playback... Audience really enjoys live tone-arm dropping and cut-phishing—adds that “at home human element”.

Now all we need is a “handle” for the station... Ideas?

Gah, so many problems with this.
1) Bottom of the hour news is too big a tune out factor. Traffic & weather on the :10s, news at the top (including sports), but headlines are plenty at the bottom. Keep it moving.

2)And this "music"? WTH? I think I may have actually heard of one of the songs at most (and I'll be 40 by the time we get this on the air, so it's not like I'm in the money demo myself). I won't kick about 'em, I'll just find 6 songs of my own to counteract them. The "conversation" after both ought to make Jane Curtin & Dan Akroyd segments sound like a diversity & tolerance seminar.

3) How could you not mention the obvious inclusion of daily extended segments on the behind the scenes aspects of professional wrestling? Sheesh, talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.

I swear, do I have to think of everything?

(Yes folks, my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek this time around)

MiddleGA... Could you possibly have failed to recognize simple “humorous cynicism”, The “playlist” was PURPOSLY chosen to make that point—although I do enjoy those tunes—but then I’m no longer in the “money demo” (speaking of a phrase begging for serious clarification) ::)

I can assure you, nearly anyone (certain age exceptions considered) with a “radio IQ” exceeding 100 probably “gets it”, and BTW—this IS a RADIO BOARD. Mere comic relief, maybe?

What say you, tcsnrayp?

And this "music"? WTH? I think I may have actually heard of one of the songs at most...

OK MiddleGA... If you're really closing in on 40, (and assuming you're music taste doesn't mirror the pro-wrestling mentioned) you should be aquainted with three of the of the titles for sure... Care to submit your favorite "six-pack"?

I'm almost 50 and I've never heard of ANY of these tunes! And I am awash in radioiotic speak....my thumbs are tired from the unusual and unnatural use of the dictionary.....
Here's six that will put short hairs on your chest......

1. If that ain't country - David Allen Coe
2. It's hard to kiss the lips at night - The Cherry Bombs
3. Dumb-a** Texas - Mike Williamson
4. Panama Red - New Riders
5. Kawliga - Hank Jr.
6. If I could only win your love - Emmylou Harris

Now why can't we have a REAL country radio station?

I'm gonna take a longshot here & guess that "Guinness" isn't the answer you're looking for ;)

Hmm ... 6 songs, how on earth to pick just six? Ah, it's not brain surgery, so in no particular order I'll take:

Midnight In Montgomery - Alan Jackson
Rainbow In the Dark - Dio
The Trooper - Iron Maiden
Man of Constant Sorrow - Soggy Bottom Boys
Ride of the Valkryies - Wagner
Animals - Nickelback

Original 6-pak?

Elvira - Dallas Frazier

Angel of the Morning - Merilee Rush

Six Days on the Road - Dave Dudley

Red Red Wine - Neil Diamond

Shame on Me - Bobby Bare tied with Juses is Coming - Bellamy Brothersa

And one where the cover is better than the original...

Penny Evans - Michelle Shocked (original is Steve Goodman

Alternate to any of the originals, Queen of the Silver Dollar - Dr. Hook

And for spots, anything for B-C Powders, and Dixie Hatfield's then little girl shilling for Farm Bureau Insurance. An awesome sound this would be.

I used to live in Atlanta during the Fox 97.1 years and remember that oldies station. I now live in rual eastern Kentucky and surprisingly not only the oldies but the "Real Oldies" format is alive and well with over 5 stations, one FM and four AM stations playing the music focusing heavily on the 50's and early 60's format. I hate to hear what is happening in Atlanta today and hope something can happen to change that. The only reason I can figure why the "Real Oldies" format is doing so well up here is because most of the radio stations in this market are all private owned and generate their advertising dollars from local Mom-and-Pop businesses. There is also a mass exodus of "Baby Boomers" moving back here to Appalachia to retire that had to leave this area and find work in bigger cities. The "Baby Boomers" here pretty much outnumber us Generation Xer's and Generation Yer's in this part of the country which explains why we only have one FM station playing a mix of today's Pop and Hip-Hop music, one AM station playing a mix of Current and Classic Country, one News/Talk station carrying mainly Cox programming, Boortz/Clark/Hannity Talk Show personalities, one Gospel station that plays a mix of Contemporary and Southern Gospel, and five Oldies Stations. For a rual area that is mostly Appalachian Coal-Mining Towns, that is still a large variety of radio for such a small market
