Does anyone know why Sunny 104.5 doesn't stream? Most other CC's stream online. Also, how early do you think Sunny will go all CHritsmas. ive been reading about how early stations may go all Christmas this year.

Sunny usually goes all-Christmas the second week of November. They usually have a "preview weekend" the week before. This year, I expect the preview weekend to begin on Friday the 4th, and the all-Christmas music to start on the 11th on 104.5. B101 will probably flip within a few hours of Sunny.
______________

Re: All-Christmas

I wouldn't be surprised if the preview weekend didn't happen this year. Last year, it tipped off B101, who went all-Christmas as soon as Sunny went back to their regular format. If I'm remembering correctly, Sunny's all-Christmas format started about 15 hours after the preview weekend ended!

Sunny's probably going to want to beat B101 to the punch this year since B got most of the listeners last year.

Re: All-Christmas/Yeesh!

It doesn't matter who "goes first" ....B101 owns the Holiday music station
image in the market. Just look back at the Fall/Winter ARB's over the last few years. Ironic, since it was Clear Channel in Philly (104.5) who started this whole thing 4 years ago. Both stations have their holiday library ready to go at any time. Last year, Sunny "went" a day or two ahead of B101. B101 still took the fall book.
When is this topic going to stop coming up on a bi-weekly basis?
My guess is when things return to a normal holiday schedule.

Re: All-Christmas/Yeesh!

The topic stops coming up when the second shoe drops--in other words, when the second of the two goes all-Christmas. This happens every year since Sunny started the tradition. No big surprise.

And even though B got the ratings last time around, I don't think they own the holiday music station image in the market at all. I feel pretty strongly that Sunny's the one with the reputation. We'd have to have an actual opinion poll to find out for sure, but most people I talk to about it mention Sunny; not B101.

I don't remember Sunny going a day or two before B last year. I thought Sunny did a preview weekend, then returned to their normal format--at which point B went all-Christmas. Am I remembering this incorrectly?

Re: All-Christmas/Yeesh!

I guess it all depends upon how you measure....if you talk about ratings for the peroid in question, B101 soundly is the winner, that is more people hear holiday music on and choose 101. If you put 10 people at random in a room and asked which station do you listen to for Christmas music, based on ratings, 7 out of 10 would say the Bee.
As far as last year's launch, yes, I'm afraid you are not recalling it correctly. Then again, I can't remember what I had for lunch today!

My memory is a bit hazy on this also. I think E.Gill.Civil may be right, that Sunny had the preview weekend, then B went all Christmas. With the possibility of many stations going all Christmas on November 1st, I wouldn't be surprised if B and Sunny will be playing all Christmas music by November 2nd! I guess we'll see.

Re: All-Christmas and marijuana

Seems no one can remember exactly when the "switch" happened. Could it be that in order to listen to two months of slow, agonizing Christmas music one would have to be stoned out of his mind?

Maybe that's why no one can remember. I know if I had to listen to two months of this stuff I would smoke pot to the point of seeing visions of sugar plumbs dancing with Michael Jackson while imagining the shock and horror felt by Jerry Penacoli's gerbils.

Unless it's The Moonglows HEY SANTA CLAUSE...I don't want to hear it!

Guess who will BENefit from both of these stations going All Christmas this year? You got it... 95.7 BEN-FM. They'll be the only Philadelphia FM playing regular adult contemporary music during the holiday season. Correct me if I'm wrong. This should be interesting.

Your post used to be called "TMI", over-sharing, etc.

Re: All-Christmas/MIX 95.7

MIX 95.7 didn't benefit from not playing Christmas music. So why would Ben-FM?
It's possible, but not probable based on history of listening habits between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Mix 95.7 was Hot AC with not much overlap between them, B101, and Sunny 104.5. Now that 95.7 has expanded their playlist to include music from the 70s through today, there is a lot more overlap. For example, Mix wasn't playing Billy Joel, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Chicago, Rod Stewart, and other AC favorites. All of these artists are popular on B, Sunny, and now BEN-FM. Mix was too busy playing Dave Matthews Band, Creed, John Mayer, Sister Hazel, and other Hot AC type groups and ignored the 70s and for the most part, 80s. Because of this overlap, I think BEN-FM will stand a pretty good chance of garnering numbers from B and Sunny listeners who want to hear their AC favorites.

Re: All-Christmas/MIX 95.7

Who's to say BEN-FM won't go all-Christmas as well? Ha ha.

BTW, on the NJ board, someone mentioned that Equity's WTTH went all-Christmas already. I thought the person was lying but I checked and it appears they are actually playing holiday tunes!

Like someone else said, Mix didn't overlap that much with B and Sunny. This year may be different. It will be interesting.

On the subject of Mix 95.7, did they mix in a few holiday tunes during the season and did they go all Christmas for the actual holiday? Just wondering. Thanks
______________

My Guess: November 1st (Was: Re: All-Christmas)

I don't think there will be a "Christmas Music Preview Weekend" this year on either WSNI-104.5 or WBEB-101.1.

I think both stations will flip to all-Christmas within minutes of oneanother on Tuesday morning, November 1st.

Yes, it will be quite early this year. But ABC Radio will start broadcasting a satellite-fed all-Christmas format on November 1st, so the fact they're doing that so soon indicates to me that there is much interest in the industry for starting the 24/7 all-Christmas wave early. Last year, KOSI in Salt Lake City went all-Christmas on Novemebr 1st.

And WTTH/WDTH in southeast New Jersey has gone all-Christmas at this writing (October 18th) although I don't know if it's a stunt (given that they've started it yesterday, October 17th).

One thing seems certain: While I don't expect the number of all-Christmas stations to be much (if at all) above last year's total of about 300 stations, I think around 100 stations will take plunge on November 1st and anywhere between thirty and fifty other stations will follow suit by the end of that week.

I thought KOSI was in Denver, but whatever.

Joseph, I'm sure most people on the boards know about your holiday music philosophy.

Now, I think November 1st is way too early to go all Christmas. It is ridiculous, and I'm sure some people will wait a while until flipping on the holiday music stations that go all Christmas very early this month. I know that the advertisers have the power though.
