From AllAccess.com:

Rumors become reality as CLEAR CHANNEL AC KEGL (SUNNY 97.1)/DALLAS will flip to Regional Mexican as 97-1 LA PRECIOSA focusing on hits from the 70's , 80's, and 90's on THURSDAY morning at 6a (CT).

97-1 LA PRECIOSA will be 100% Spanish language and broadcast the format "live" utilizing the LA PRECIOSA NETWORK and have ANNA DE HARRO in DALLAS with local news and information. ALEX LUCAS will host the morning show "live" and is the program director of the format. JAMIE ALEJANDRO will be joining us as Operations Manager and afternoon drive based in DALLAS, coming in from KSJO/SAN JOSE.

CLEAR CHANNEL Regional VP/GM & DALLAS Market Mgr. J.D. FREEMAN told ALL ACCESS, "CLEAR CHANNEL has had terrific success with this format in BAKERSFIELD, SAN JOSE, and LAS VEGAS where the format is currently #1 25-54. And, we've had comparable success in MONTEREY, SANTA BARBARA, and SANTA MARIA, CA. This is a significant commitment to serve the Hispanic community in DALLAS-FT. WORTH. I'm extremely excited about the future of the station."

Leaving the station are morning man EDDIE COYLE, and air personalities STACEY JAMES, and RACHEL EVERSON.

That's just what we need in D/FW - another freaking hispanic station.

You're dang right that sounded racist.

At this rate, in five years English-language stations (particularly music) in DFW will be relegated to FM fringe signals or, worse yet, just the AM band. Thank goodness for satellite radio... at least you can still hear English-language programming there.

This is why I dont listen to "terrestrial" radio myself. If im called a bigot because I think they're should be more choice than "ranchera" and "Romantica",then label me one (and we all know dave eduardo will). Wheres the asian and black communities in this argurment, as their not being properly represented as well??

It is a reflection of the rapidly growing Hispanic population in the DFW area and the growing popularity of many of the stations that service that population.

7-11 stores check their inventory nearly every night to see what their customers want. If the customers aren't buying an item, or a similar item sells better, the store changes.

Radio is no different because, first and foremost, it is a business.

And remember, early on, many on this board, predicted that Sunny would not survive.

Sadly for many of its employees, that prediction has proved accurate.

Why is that racist?

Any more so than me saying all we need is another freakin' country station? Does that mean I was bigoted against whites when I said that?

97.1 becomes another dead spot on the dial that English speaking listeners will avoid. Nobody that speaks English as a primary language will get very excited about another foreign language station. That's not racist its just fact. Any more than a rock fan will be excited about a country station. Just not interested, don't care, don't even care that I don't care. My 97.1 preset goes to KLAK or KNIN - both of which come in really well now that I did the narrow ceramic filter trick in my car radio.

This is NOT just another Hispanic station. It is very successful in other markets and has the potential to shake the ratings up in DFW. Too many people on these boards look at radio from a personal taste perspective instead of looking at the big picture.

Good point, however my preset is now changed. Sunny did have some decent music. The Mix needs the flip to something. Funny.but when AM was seeing it's listeners migrate to the FM band in the 70's,the AM band was gaining more and more spanish stations as well as an increase in religous ones. Now FM is slowly but surely losing listners to satellite, and the internet. History repeating? I am sure the resident sage will say no.

Just an observation, but there might be more than one "resident sage" on the board. Then again, they could all be curmudgeons.

La Musica De Navidad En Estereo Este Decembro En La Presciosa 97.1!

(pardon any spelling and grammar errors; I did not take Spanish in school--I took three years of French!)

This may also be an ecomonic move on Clear Channel's part.

I'm not sure how much of "Sunny's" (KEGL-97.1) broadcast day featured live announcers, but being in a major market, it's possible it had live announcing for between 14 and 19 hours a day on weekdays and additional hours on weekends.

By contrast, with the switch to La Presciosa, KEGL will only be live and local for about eight hours a day on weekdays (and maybe no local/live programming on weekends).

There will be fewer hours of local programming on KEGL with likely, a corresponding reduction in expenses since there will be fewer on-air people.

After all, the major reason for the rapid growth of the "Jack" format (and it's clones) is that the "Jack"-type format has no live announcers, which eliminates a major percentage of a radio station's payroll.

And Christian stations are bad because?:

> more
> spanish stations as well as an increase in religous ones.

With KLTY tying for number one in that female demographic, you would think Clear channel would make more money trying to tap into that audience. It seems that the big radio companies would rather try any format other than contemporary Christian - no matter how bizarre (can we say "casa") - in spite of the fact they could make money with CCM.

The absence of the large companies in the format condemns it to churches and religious organizations who will continue to do it badly. Done right, I think somebody playing CCM could give KLTY some serious competition.

But - let's continue to ignore the ratings, and come up with more and more niche Hispanic and country formats until the audience is so diluted they all get less ratings and go out of business, and the disenfranchished listeners are ALL listening to rock, CCM, AC, and other abandoned formats on satellite.
