Super Bowl Halftime & Apple TV

Our Fox affiliate in PHX had a morning show poll of the six most enjoyable 'things' of The Stupor Bowl. Rihanna was dead last with a rating of 6%. The top item was rated 45% (I forgot just what it was).
Arizona MAGAts probably thought Rihanna was a Mexican and wondered why she wasn't whisked off the stage and placed on a bus back to Nogales.

Enjoyable things other than the game itself, which was one of the most dramatic, highlight-filled Super Bowls ever? I find it hard to believe that even people like you, who are fed up with the hype and glitz surrounding the game, wouldn't rate the game itself highly. Of course, you refused to watch it, which is your right, but still ...

The show was a spectacular production from a technical standpoint. And whether a bunch of rednecks and way-over-the-hill fogeys understand or not, performers like Rhianna are hugely popular. But then again, anything that has a remotely ethnic tinge of any kind sets them off, like clockwork.

So I was watching the Rihanna performance during the Super Bowl halftime show. And she was dressed in a big flowing gown. But at one point, she drew attention to her stomach, and it appeared that she was pregnant. So I immediately did a search, and there was nothing about her being pregnant that I could find on the web. So now, I see I wasn't the only one, and that her rep has confirmed that she is in fact pregnant with her second child.

I have to say I watched that performance very closely, and I still wonder how much was real, and how much was special effects. I'm sure we'll all know soon enough.
I watched five seconds because of the way I set up my recordings. Took me a while to realize that garbage that some people describe as music was not a commercial.

And yet, as the Fox Sports announcers pointed out, the grass and the turf caused problems for the players. And time was taken after the halftime show to pick up any residual residue from the grass. Yet players continued to lose their footing.
The field was bad before the game even started.

I thought that Chris Stapleton did an excellent job with his country-tinged version of the Star-Spangled Banner. And I thought that Sheryl Lee Ralph's rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was beautiful also.

I didn't get the theme of the halftime show. Maybe this was because I had some chores to do during halftime, and I didn't see all of it. I understood why the stages were suspended in the air, so that the grass on the field wasn't harmed. But I didn't get why the dancers were dressed like storm troopers, or why Rihanna wore what looked like a jumpsuit for airborne rangers. I guess this had to do with being on the stage in mid air. Just my opinion. - D.

I heard on one of my local country stations today that Dierks Bentley, a country star in his own right and a big fan of Stapleton, has suggested making Chris the halftime performer ASAP. Of course, we all know that rhythmic will rule for the foreseeable future with Jay-Z's Roc Nation pulling the strings, but the local DJ made a good point, remarking that Stapleton doesn't put on a flashy show and would just look silly with dancers backing him up. The anthem would seem to be the glass ceiling for non-rhythmic performers at the Super Bowl.

Fox Promotes their Tubi app during the Super Bowl.

Also the Super Bowl halftime segment was seen by 123.5 Million viewers according to the current data.

While Fox Sports and Nielsen have yet to release their data for viewing during the big game, newly released data from AdImpact is providing a moment-by-moment analysis of viewing trends at key points in the game.

Their data suggests that Super Bowl LVII viewing peaked at 124 million near the end of the second quarter and that viewing levels ranged from 98.8 million at kickoff to 113.4 million at the end of the game. About 123.5 million people watched Rihanna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show.

“An extraordinary marquee event to complete the 2023 NFL season, Super Bowl LVII between the KC Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, and its Rhianna halftime entertainment show on Fox Network was truly an advertisers’ success,” said Rick McGuire, director of sales at AdImpact. “Viewership was 20% higher than last year’s Super Bowl, reaching over 123M viewers at the peak of halftime. Advertisers who participated in this year’s big game experienced consistent higher ratings as the two teams battled down to the final field goal of the game. The combination of a close game and a younger-skewed halftime show, made for the perfect combination to keep viewers interested right to the final seconds.”

I can't speak for the AZ MAGAtwits because I'm definitely not one of them. Besides, I grew up in AZ and the 'Mexican' (Spanish speaking) portion of our states' population was just another culture - and, has turned out to be a very popular one (think music and food for starters). My dad was a salesman on the road a lot visiting the mines in SoAZ. My grandfather lived in Silver City NM most of his life so I got a massive love of 'Mexican' food from them (except fish).

I watched Stupor Bowls early on (mid to late 60's) and found that most of the games really sucked. Although I like football a lot this particular event fell way short of the sports entertainment that was NASCAR and hockey in those days. Now it is positioned more towards the entire audience (including females who apparently found their niche in parties, fireworks and commercials) and who also prefer singers, dancers, and Las Vegas type entertainment than what used to be a genuine championship football game - and I bailed. I still watch a ton of NCAA games but have almost totally excluded the NFL product.

I did hear the same opinion from others as to the excitement of the game so I did watch some highlights. Didn't see anything of note except the referees non-call of what should have been a pick-six for the Chiefs. The only excitement I could fathom would have been those 'fans' whose great pleasure is placing a bet on the game.

The Super Bowl TV ratings are out and to no one's surprise, this was one of the most-watched games ever:

The face off between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, a nail biter in which the latter team emerged victorious after a game defining play late in the fourth quarter, averaged 113 million viewers across Fox’s television and digital properties, according to early data from Nielsen.

That makes Super Bowl LVII the third most-watched television program of all-time. And it represents the best audience for the big game in six years, topping 2022’s showdown, which averaged 112.3 million viewers on NBC.

Over 113 million people watched, and it was a competitive game that either team could have won.
