Supertalk Needs an Identity

The Beck Headline News boards look great---I'm talking obout the blurry "cup of angry" boards that look like they were designed as part of a jr high art project.

If Supertalk wants to see the light of a 2 share, they need to play some music.
"Play some funky music white boy" Opps I forgot they got a non compete with Radio One.
Guess no funky music, for that matter no music. If they brought back Mix they could cut into
Q102's party a little, but that's too close to Warm. so we won't want refresh 96-5 with some numbers,
leave it talkin and hope for a 1.2 instead. Why don't we call it Free Fm and get the same results as
CBS did. Cumulus can do Country well when they want to, maybe they can go back to Country,
since there deal was with Entercom. Doubt it thou. Sounds like the mighty 96 will be talkin'
with a 1 share for a while. Good luck going against the Clear Co machine.

I understand there are smiles at the 895 today, much to the unhapiness of our friend midwestxfiles.

Here's a riddle for him:  What's 92,000?  (WFTK's October cume, up 74%...WCKY fell 35% to 55,200)

Here's another:  What's 4.3, Persons 25-54?  (Furman's - uh I mean the Train Wreck's - afternoon number for October), which was ahead of all 3 CC Talk Stations.  Furman was 7th, WLW was 14th at 3.2 and Homer was 15th with a 2.0.

And another?  What's 2.0 Persons 25-54?  (WFTK's October)
Yet another:  What's 0.7 Persons 25-54?  (WCKY's October)
By the way, WKRC had a 2.8.  WLW had a 5.7, down from an 8.4.

There's so much more, like WFTK's 301% increase in AM drive to #19, while WCKY dropped 81% to #27.

What about the midday 25-54 cume of 28,600 for WFTK versus 31,800 for WKRC?  Oh, WCKY's was 11,500 down 46%.  WLW still rules with a 81,800.

While I love sticking it to my friend midwestxfiles, I would warn those at the 895 to hold your gloating until more numbers arrive a month from now.  It's only a trend as they say, and judging by the past it could be fleeting.

Sounds like the 2 Angry Guys are helping the station a lot. Getting people listening in the morning often keeps them the rest of the day. Poor Alan Cutler. Listeners are dropping from his show like crazy.

With the other threads complaining about no one being at home (working at the stations) on Thanksgiving, I must ask:

Why can't these companies pay for a board operator on holidays, if they have such enormous amounts of money to pay for these stations in the first place?

Well my friend, the answer is simple... Large "radio" entities are not in the business of radio station operations, or programming. They are about maximizing revenue, and "reach for their advertisers". They overpay for the stations in the first place, so the money for operations is gone before they even get going. The FCC mandate of "Serving the public interest" is shrewdly bypassed for profit, leaving the listener scratching his head for answers to your question and others, while searching for an entertaining alternative to this practice. The good news is, radio will return to some shade of its former self....forced into creating compelling content, and tighter program operations by ipod, XM/Sirius, and the internet, as these alternatives continue to eat into terrestrial listenership, and revenues.

I thought their identity was talk. Sports all day is tedious. The hosts are obligated to cover the same 'breaking' topics all day long and few of them are talented enough to find a fresh perspective.

Their new ID is construction radio. Instead of Beck they are running background sounds from a building site. Hammers, trucks backing up, cranes, concrete pouring...

The Alcoholic Angry Guy signed off this morning by saying "The Angry Guys will be back." The 'educated' angry guy signed off by saying that he was starting his Christmas vacation and hinting that he would be back next year.

Glenn Beck has joined the Teamsters and is running a jackhammer.

My questioning of "identity" was more aimed at are they a sports talk, political talk, or financial talk. There is no set theme to the programming.

I still wish they would carry NFL football games on Sunday, if not Westwood One, the Jones Network games.

What is the deal with that? Anybody?

the Westwood one NFL Games are owned by WCKY. Plus to mention even if Supertalk had the WW1 or Jones Network Games they could only air the ones that arent concurrent with the Bengal Games on WCKY/WLW/WOFX. Aka if the Bengals had a 1pm game, Supertalk cant air an NFL Game on its airwaves. Just like over on TV with Fox and CBS and the Bengals are at Home. Say the bengals are playing the colts on WKRC at 1pm and it Was FOX's NFL Doubleheader Weekend on WXIX. WXIX could only air the 4:15 game and would have to air local programing at 1pm due to Bengals having exclusive market rights while at Home at 1pm. just the same in radio except that its both home and away. thus WFTK cant air anything simultaniously while the bengals are on over at Clear channel

So it appears that Cumulus's FM talk experiment has failed in another market. They have been unable to replicate what they have done in Nashville.

They've been advertising for sales jobs on the website by playing up the sports programming, and I can't believe they brought the Peeved Professor and the Raging Retiree back just to carry them for three months.

So I guess they're gonna go all-jock sniff. Too bad. I was enjoying Dennis Miller at night. Oh well.

Cumulus just added ESPN Radio, 93.9 The Ticket, to the Louisville airwaves today. Louisville now has 3 sports stations and we don't even have a pro franchise!

It looks like my prediction of sportstalk could be true. Does Cincinnati need 3 sports stations? Wow!!
prior to the AMFM/Clear channel Merger Cincinnati had 3 Sports Station, 1160 WBOB, 1230 WUBE Bob2 and then 1360 Homer. And Indy will Soon have 3 sports station XL 950, ESPN 1070 the Fan and 1260 WNDE. Its not like Markets have 3 sports stations these days

Scotch, you and midwest were reallyyy quiet when those numbers came out. Suddenly you're pumping your chest. Get real. WCKY got killed by WFTK in October and WLW took a kick in the shins in the afternoon. This was purely an idiotic move by a small-minded corporate entity.

I think there's another station in your cluster that's going to have to worry now.
