Syndicated Tom Kent to "evenings" on WODS

I was listening again tonight on the way home for a short time. I like the music selection but Tom got to me pretty quickly. The way too long conversation with the guy whom he asked to fire off his rifle/shotgun and who had the bad cellphone was enough for me. I couldn't take it anymore. Last night, it was the way too long conversation with Kara who turns 24 in two weeks.

If he cuts the conversations in half and gets on with it, maybe I could put up with him more.

It happened again on yesterday's show (Tuesday) as well. The song Baby Come Back skipped twice and another song skipped as well.

You need to contact WODS and make them aware of this problem. It is the delivery method from their end, not from Tom Kent's that is causing the skipping.

Ummm...why should we have to contact WODS?

I'm not sure what market you listen to Tom Kent in, but Boston is a major market.

We should expect that the station is already aware, and will take the necessary steps.

(Or do you listeners are the only ones who are aware that a CD is skipping and no one is home at WODS?)

Personally, I think the show sounds very "medium-market".

It sounds syndicated....with the ID breaks, etc.

Is this the best a major market CBS O&O could do for evenings?

(Or could "luckygreen" BE Tom Kent checking reaction in Boston....with 4 posts....?)

I realize Boston is a major market Lou. And yes, you would think the station is aware and taking necessary steps to fix the problem. However, if listeners are still complaining about skipping, then obviously the station hasn't taken the necessary steps yet. If the station I listen to was repeatedly having technical issues, I would prob. call them for starters and ask...what's up? The market I listen to Tom in is rated nowhere near to Boston, but the quality of the show on the station I listen to is great...I have never heard any skipping. I believe WODS listeners are very lucky to have such a great talent on the air! As for your "medium-market" comment, that is simply your opinion. Tom is being played in many major markets now and the response has been positively amazing. We are all entitled to our opinions, but I do hope you will continue to listen to the show and give it a chance. Oh, and the last time I checked, I was not Tom Kent, but just a sweet Ga Girl that loves radio.

it just goes to show that some "old school radio guys" like myself understand its the little things that count.

The usual reason for going syndicated rather than live is cost cutting, saving money.

The show may cost WODS very little, maybe nothing. Some syndicated shows are completely sponsored by national ads carried on them.

CBS Radio Boston/WODS eliminated a full-time air talent salary from their budget by running this show (and another by going jockless overnights).

So it's all about making radio by spending the least amount of money possible?

It's not about winning?

Of course it's my opinion. Thats what a radio BB like this is for...opinions.

What market are you in? Maybe in a small market Tom sounds OK. That's what syndication is for, to help smaller stations sound better.

But in the environment of a larger market...it sounds small time to open breaks with automated ID's.

"Oldies one-oh-three-point-three.....(pause).....annnnnnd that was (insert artist)..."

Is there a list of the stations he is on? How would you know that "the response has been positively amazing"?

No, maybe I'm spoiled, but I don't have any need to listen to a generic syndicated show from out of town for music. There are too many other choices.

As for just being a Ga girl....your just decided to check out the Boston board and your first 5 posts are about Tom Kent on Oldies? No other board, no other topic?

????

I think the show is o.k.. I think they try hard to make it sound like he is in "the area" (so to speak) but then when you hear a phone call and the person sounds like someone from the midwest you realize it's fake and they just "gave it away".

Busted!

Explain to me this guy's talent.Thank goodness for presets. He's unlistenable. And now I find out he's not from Boston, but syndicated. This station's on crack. No Thursday night Countdown, first Callahan who was great, then J.J who did a wonderful job. This was the only time when they expanded their virgin-like tight playlist. Now no American Top 40.GM Jay Beau Jones. You're doing almost as well as Jason Varitek does at the plate this year.AKA,why don't you move on before you totally ruin this station.

I've never seen one man ruin a radio station like JayBeau with all of this syndicated garbage.

How do you know it's all his idea? Maybe station management above him, maybe even CBS national corporate, wants to cut down payroll at some of their stations, and ordered him to replace some locally hosted slots with low-cost syndicated programming.

I don't know Jay Beau or anyone personally involved there, but I've seen many situations where PD's have had to follow orders from above them, even if they were the last things they would have wanted to do on their own.

...and just like that, "luckygreen" dissappears, never to be heard from again.

;-)

According to the Wikipedia entry on Kent: "The new Tom Kent Radio Network now reports more than 100 new affiliates since its launch on March 16 including CBS (O&O) WOMC in Detroit, Michigan, Lincoln Financial (O&O) WMXJ in Miami, Florida. CBS (O&O) KLUV in Dallas, Clear Channel (O&O) KLOU in St. Louis, CBS (O&O) WODS in Boston, and CBS O&Os KOOL in Phoenix, and ...KLTH in Portland."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Kent

There is no affiliate list on Kent's site as far as I know. Sounds like CBS corporate put him on ODS since they seem to be doing it at several other CBS O&Os.
