Taking time out on HD

I am trying to figure out how Radioman did so well with HD in downtown Dallas. I have several reports that NO HD can be received more that 10 to 12 miles from Cedar Hill.

Pretty simple really. I checked into the hotel, then pulled the Receptor HD out of the box, connected the single wire antenna (not a dipole) and turned it on. The room was on the 2nd floor.

For mobile reception, I used the JVC HD car stereo. It also worked very well.

I wish there was a way I could disable the HD part in my Sangean HDT-1 I like the tuner, its nice and solid, but I dont like the fact of HD droping in and out all the time.

I am wondering if some of the problems were from people in the flight path to the airport? Frequent planes flying overhead produce havoc with the analog signal - I can only wonder how badly it affects HD. It looks like I'm going to have to bit the bullet and get one of the HD clunkers - then I'll make some careful measurements and find out what is going on. Like it or not, the FCC has stuck us with this system, for it to be a success it is going to take some understanding of the problems and solutions to them. Unfortunately, for many people, that will probably mean antenna tinkering.

Manufacturers might want to look into fractal antenna technology. It is almost 90% as efficient as the full sized version, and they might be able to squeeze a substantial antenna inside cabinets of table radios. Unfortunately - fractals don't work with AM loops, so the manufacturers might want to go back to oversized ferrite bars and / or large loops on the inside of one side of the case.

Was that you posting about second adjacents? Not many of the move-ins have HD, so theoretically the HD sidebands should be in tact. So I don't think that is the issue.
