Talk is, Free-FM's over & out at WFNY

We need an outlet for new rock music here in the city and, as much as people say FM radio is dead when it comes to rock, we're still the biggest market and have influence over the entire country. I hope it's not too 90's and 80's based.

Does it?

Sorry, I had to ask. :)

Wonder what will happen on the 923freefm.com website after 5pm rolls around? Set your PC's clock to a little after 5:00pm and then go to the website.

;D

Noneed to do that. Simply look at the code on teh page:

TargetDate = "05/24/2007 5:00 PM UTC-0400";
BackColor = "black";
ForeColor = "white";
CountActive = true;
CountStepper = -1;
LeadingZero = true;
DisplayFormat = "%%H%%:%%M%%:%%S%% ";
FinishMessage = "Now What?";

That's the message you get "What Now?"

I was being silly when I posted this on another thread, but the more I think about it......At 5pm today, CBS Radio announces the launch of the all new K-ROCK Network......coming to you live from Cleveland :p

I think the reason the Atlanta rock station is called Project 9-6-1 reflect the stations attitude towards being a radio PROJECT that is always evolving, building, adjusting the music, personalities, the promotions, the lifestyle promotions...etc. ALL THAT stuff that a young-ish rock audience is wanting in Atlanta.

AND BTW major ratings increase since the flip 6 months ago doing a lifestyle rock station with jocks that get out with the people. 96rock played Fleetwood Mac/Elton John/Boston/Doobies. That s*#t sucks if you're under 30. Actually it just sucks.

If the new K-ROCK wants to connect and superserve the young male rock music fans (of which there are a lot) they need to bring in some new radio voices for a new New York audience and look out for those lifestyle events to get involved with exactly like PROJECT/ATLANTA and other hugely successfull stations (KROQ/LA).

Sorry Dash Riprock, but RIP 96rock. Nice run, but its time for a new generation of rock fans to get theirs.

K-ROCK and others will show rock that rocks is back!

I think flipping to newer rock is a great move for CBS, despite all the talk that NYC is not a rock town. A station focusing on current and 90s rock with some 80s alternative thrown in should work, as rock is replacing hip-hop as the genre of choice for most younger people. There's a big rock scene in New York, and cable stations like Fuse, which are heavily rock-based, are very successful with younger demos. Most of the old K-Rock listeners didn't really migrate to any other radio station after it flipped, and most of them will likely return now. It may not be the largest audience (it's not going to get the 9-5 listener), but it will get a good young demo which advertisers desire. Also, I hear that rock stations have seen increased success in markets where the PPM device has been put into use. PPM is coming to New York soon, so this could also be a great proactive move on the part of CBS. If they keep O&A in the morning or even afternoons, along with music, that will also keep a lot of the (relatively few) Free FM listeners. O&A have done music on their show before, in their early days on WNEW.

As far as Jack, they will probably focus more on more "mainstream" acts from the 70s, 80s and 90s, reaching a different audience from the resurrected K-Rock.

The beauty of wireless is it allows me to work and still get messages even while working. Taking a break to respond on this and other boards is a relief from a stressful day.

WFNY

All the time, money, resources, effort and marketing- all to end up back where you started.

Brilliant.

It's actually quite interesting. Radio has few places to go. It's something that we think is always just there but with the way the world has changed and the new habits of the upcoming generations, you might see radio become like an AM dial- no one has a reason to listen. I think no one is looking forward as much as looking back (human nature/how our brain works). The record industry is gone and now something completely different than anyone expected has replaced it and it can not be long before radio finds itself wondering what happened to listeners as we get older and a new generation comes to be. I don't know what the answer is, but I do think it will be something that no one really has grasped yet.

K-rocks Hd-2 has been off since I got a sangean HD radio a month ago is it on now? unfortunately I am stuck in VA Beach for a family wedding.

Could it be that they'll move their K-Rock 2 Active Rock HD Format up to the main frequency? The station has jocks, it is already programmed, and could be implemented by flipping a switch. My guess is that they're wasn't a lot of time to flip the format, so this would be the easiest solution!
