TALK RADIO SHOW HOSTS RIVALRIES

Which talk radio show hosts have rivalries, and/or do not like one another? For example, I know that many conservative and some moderate hosts have fiercly criticized liberal Air America hosts like Al Franken vs. Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. I also read that Joy Browne has criticized Dr. Laura. And some conservative hosts are not too supportive of Mike Savage. Any others?

And what about those hosts who continually praise other hosts, like Sean Hannity does with Rush and Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham, and of course Dr. Laura? Any others?

Rivalries were a lot more fun when more stations were local and more lineups were mixed, meaning you could have a "Battle of the Talk Show Hosts" and pack a venue (and even charge admission). These days, the "rival" might not even have clearance in your area, meaning you're limited to one side of the feud unless you hunt for the other online.

Dr. Bill Wattenburg attacking Karel at the KGO All Stars Debate in Fall 2005, the KGO debate that ended all future KGO debates !

(That was when Dr. Bill played a tape recorder of Karel, etc.)

I do not know if the Bill and Karel rivalry continues today or not. However, Ray Talliaferro has attacked Dr. Bill on his program. KGO management doesn't seem to do anything. I wouldn't either, since it's good for ratings.
Maybe it was due to Dr. Bill's jealousy of Karel's ratings, I don't know. That's what starts a lot of these rivalries, like Lars Larson (KXL) vs. Randi Rhodes (KPOJ) in Portland, OR.

I remember how Larry King would often get his nose out of joint when some caller would mention Rush.

King seemed threatened. He didn't have to. The two shows were completely different.

Tom Snyder often mentioned Rush. Once, when a caller brought up a possible Rush TV show, Tom said, "If he had a show, I think we'd hear about it." Implying the Big Mouth would be all over it 24/7. Nailed it.

...for that matter, Tom Snyder would take shots at Larry King for years. Then again, King tried to pick fights with anybody who was on opposite him (consider the cranking on Chicago Ed Schwartz in the Sun-Times when Schwartz moved to WGN and King replaced him on WIND)...

...and, of course, there's the situation regarding any Hot Talk host worth a damn -- Danny Bonaduce vs. Mancow Muller, Tom Leykis vs. Steve Dahl, Tom Leykis vs. Brian Whitman, Tom Leykis vs. Jonathon Brandmeier, Tom Leykis vs. Laura Schlessinger, Howard Stern vs. Tom Leykis, Howard Stern vs. Mancow Muller, Howard Stern vs. Don Imus, Howard Stern vs. Opie & Anthony, Adam Carolla vs. Danny Bonaduce...

Aren't those hot-talk rivalries pretty much what pro wrestlers call a "work"? Aren't they mostly fake?

Few are legit. A lot of them are just fraudulent. Jocks will hate other jocks so they look like a good boy in front of their bosses, even if they were friends with the other jock before.

When you hear hosts rail against one another on-air, it's a safe bet that it's for show. If you genuinely don't like someone, why would you want to give them the publicity... ;D

Because when they do genuinely dislike someone, they skate around mentioning their name. Even in-station rivalries experience this. For a while on KFI, John Kobylt of "John and Ken" was referring to their lead-out John Ziegler as "Voldemort."

Why would anyone bash someone else "for show?" Is the target going to simply understand and accept it? I'd be pretty annoyed if someone did that to me.

It's all "for show" on the radio.
Hopefully the host being bashed knows that, too.....

I have seen this in a few more ways than one.

Ed Schultz vs. cross-town Hannity fill in Scott Hennen (Owner GM. of WZFG - sresently silent with studios being built)

but the "Armpit of Radio" Fargo, ND now has it going 3 ways

Double Ewe Dee 'eh Why AM vs Hennen and Ed Schultz fully knowing that Hennen will bury DAY in the first book. As for Schultz.. and DAY... No Contest.

I sure hope WDAY changes alot of things before Hennen gets his studios done.

Is it REALLY? We know how that stuff trickles down to the listeners, and how seriously they take it. Radio attracts a strange type of egomaniac.

I think the torch is carried by the listeners more than the hosts. The big syndicated hosts try to stay above the fray for the most part. But get a passionate 'dittohead' and they will go postal if you try to tell them Hannity is better than Rush. Same can be said for any host's biggest fans (their P1's).

Anyone remember Larry King's last week on his national radio show?

He seemed real upset that most of his callers disagreed with him. I think radio was getting "too right wing."

On one of his last daytime shows, I think he got fed up and said he wasn't going to take any more calls. He faded down one caller and started playing music, and mumbled over the song.

One caller, I recall, called him and told him he thought King was leaving because of Rush. Boy, did Larry get mad about that call.

Actually its amusing to hear Savage attack everyone else. He is pretty creative about most of them. Connecting Mark Levin with Groucho Marx was brilliant. Haha.

And I think the PhD is in Nutritional Science or Biochemistry or something insane like that.

He is responsible for the formula for Rockstar energy drink [among others].

Half the time I think Savage's ranting is just schtick and the other half I think he's actually crazy -- the hallmark of someone doing it just right.

I think that it's at least for real with Erich Muller when it comes to Bob & Tom; he can't stand those two.
