Talk Radio: The Big Gap On Sirius

Although there's a gtreat variety of music channels on Sirius, I am extremely diasppointed in the quality of its talk prograsmming. Of course there's Stern, and Alex Bennett as well as Lynn Samuels are quite good. But most of the other talk shows on Sirius are awful, or at best out of place.: Thom Hartman, Michael Reagan, Hannity repeats, Stephanie Miller, etc. These are just terrestrial shows that in my opinion don't belong on Sirius when there's plenty of talent out there for Sirius to hire as Sirius talk show hosts. Weekenders on KFI in Los Angeles and KGO in San Francisco would be a good place to start.

It's unfortunate that Sirius has been "lazy" in the talk radio department...with more people than ever getting their music from the internet. good talk radio is still very much appreciated by listeners and should be more than just an afterthought to the music.

Unfortunatley when they spent 500 million on Stern it dosnt leave much of a budget for other talent. Its called putting all your eggs in one basket.

I hear you. What's XM's excuse?

Sirius talk overall is lame... Raw Dog shows like Breuer and Wise Guys are unlistenable to me as is most of the Sirius "Stars" channel with exception of Jay Thomas.

Blaming it on Stern's contract is goofy. Sirius Talk was bad long before they signed Stern. And in fact Stern singlehandedly puts Sirius talk ahead of XM for me.

I'm glad that Sirius Left has some of the "national" shows that are not available in many parts of the country. I liked Lynn Samuels on WABC years ago when she was on weekdays, and Alex Bennett can be interesting, but on a channel designated for "liberal talk" these two shows are more rambling thoughts on miscellaneous topics rather than political/social talk. I appreciate having Bill Press, Thom Hartman & Ed Schultz (he was recently taken off a station in my area for a non-political "advice" show) for a "balance" to the Patriot and Fox Talk. Bennett & Samuels would be better on 102 where they can talk about American Idol, Lynn's travels getting around in New York City, Alex's medical stories, and such topics they talk about.

I respect your opinion and it just goes to show how different tastes can and should be served by satellite radio. The reason I mentioned Samuels and Bennett is because they are actually Sirius hosts, who in my opinion offer a great alternative to standard party-line terrestrial talk shows. In my neck of the woods, music radio lacks variety, and is watered-down, over-researched and over-consulted. Sirius provides a great alternative with all flavors of rock, pop, jazz, country, dance, etc. My point is I think it is at least as important to offer a similar alternative to the standard party-line talk shows heard on AM radio throughout the country. Outside of Stern, Bennett ans Samuels I just don't see muc of ane effort being made by Sirius to deliver quality "unique" talk radio, which, unlike music, is seldom downloaded from the internet.

Whoa, you have to be joking. Where are the cameras? Is asthon kutcher about to tell me i've been punk'd. AM radio is horrible and staticy at best. Satellite radio rules, XM has great talk you silly goose.

What is needed...

I think Lionel would be a good addition to Sirius Left. I would love a Lynn Samuels or and Alex Bennett rerun during the night as opposed to Thom. He can be interesting at times but is mainly soporific. General talk adds: Phil Hendrie would be nice, he was nationwide at one point. Leykis? He can be funny; CBS property, ditto Penn Jillette (Showtime is CBS as well, which was an easy tap for them).

~sorta related~

I like Vin Scelsa (?) if you would consider him 50% talk, he's I voice I like from K-Rock and NEW NYC, but Disorder should dump World Cafe-it puts me to sleep. I live near XPN and I don't listen to that show. Chris-T from WFMU, who does some stuff on the 'Trucker Channel', could carry a talk show on Sirius. Check out his podcast archives @ WFMU.org. Actually, I would love WFMU on Sirius.

Oh, andf they should bring back Rotten Radio, with Johnny Rotten/Lydon of the Sex Pistols. He was a great host on eYada.

Has anyone heard Sirius NFL Radio? The hosts are top notch and cover the league like a blanket with insightful, hard hitting analysis. The hosts also treat their callers with respect. Channel 124 is worth listening to if you want your football fix.

Now there is a playboy station, you have to go on the sirius website and opt-in for it but its free unlike when it was a premium channel on xm.

As a football nut I find 124 to be a mixed bag, so glad Dan Reeves got a job with Houston, major bore on the morning show. Shannon Sharpe is unlistenable. If you tried to construct a voice not made for radio you could start with him. Really like Chris Carter, Tim Ryan, Pat Kirwan.

Playboy channel is a cool alternative for filling some time. The morning thing with Cort and Kevin, evenings with Christie? Canyon and the other girl is funny.
One evening they were arguing about whether the 50% cut the Bunny Ranch takes from the girls working there is too much. One girl kept saying the Bunny Ranch owner would have to take some dicks with her before she'd give him that much.

Scott Ferrel on 101 is interesting.

The cupboard aint bare but look when the morning show on your exclusive talk channel is a Little Richard Simmons replay you got problems.

I would love to see some additional talent added to Sirius in all of the talk departments. I, for one, am glad that Hannity, O'Reilly, and some of the other terrestrial shows are also on satellite. One of the reasons I got satellite radio was so I would be able to get those shows anywhere regardless of whether they were carried locally. I was disappointed to see Air America go away when it did, because in my area of the country there is no AAR affiliate. In the political/news talk arena, I think Sirius could be better, but I don't think the lack of quality programming is nearly as bad as it is in the sports/talk arena. I don't mind listening to Dan Patrick, but the sports by-line channel is absolutely awful and thats being kind. I like the NFL channel, but I believe Sirius would be wise to try to either get Fox Sports, or The Sporting News network to at least offer an alternative to ESPN.Just my thoughts.

I agree, sports is the one area that Sirius falls way short. Other than that, I think it is a much better product than XM, at least from when I had my XM.
