Tara's a goner!

All Access is reporting that Tara Servatius' contract is not being renewed at WBT.  Might they be bringing Pete Kaliner back to handle PM Drive?  I wouldn't be surprised.  Kaliner, in my mind, was a rising talk radio star who treated most callers respectfully, could talk more than just politics and was, generally, entertaining. Let's see where this goes...

My predictions:
--They'll bring Vince Coakley in full-time...he has done a pretty good job filling in for John Hancock
--Bring back Kaliner...but unlikely after they cut him a few months ago
--Go syndicated...but there's not that many choices out there
--Go all-news from 3-6...other stations are doing it across the country and it's certainly less costly than hiring a new talk host

Here's a question...why hasn't 1660 made a play for Kaliner?

Yea!! How soon is she gone? She was more sensationalistic than Fox News. My choice would be Pete Kaliner, but Vince Coakley isn't a bad choice either. I was really surprised at how good Coakley was during fill-in.

According to the Charlotte Observer, she was called into the office after her show yesterday and told she would not be returning to the mic. So, Thursday was apparently it for her. I have to ask this question, however. Why do some personalities get to say goodbye and some don't? Kaliner had what a month or so to say goodbye? Surely Greater Media knew they were going to cut her loose prior to yesterday.

No great loss, but I'm sure WBT will find another far right wing hate-talker. I wouldn't be surprised at Vince Coakley--he was so obviously a right winger during his time at WSOC-TV.

Mark Washburn in the Observer suggests that Vince Coakley might fit as her replacement having filled in a few times since leaving his TV job.  Well, maybe Wayne Powers who also has done a bit of fill-in work for them lately is a candidate.  Then again, maybe they'll move Hancock (uh, uh...uh) back to drivetime where he was before being let go years ago.  HIre one of the above or another no-cost syndicated show for 6-9 PM and they've got it covered. My vote for afternoons?  I'm hoping Kaliner returns.  No surprise, huh?

Servatius is a good investigative reporter but a lousy broadcaster with an annoying voice, although she was improving in the last few months. Kaliner is also a really good reporter. On the air, he was pleasant and well-informed, but pretty boring. Jeff Katz was just too rude and obnoxious. Vince Coakley? Awful choice. Like listening to your front lawn grow and another annoying voice. TV news anchors are at their best reading teleprompters, not doing live talk radio and Coakley is an obvious example. Wayne Powers? I didn't like him so much when he first was filling in a few years ago, but he's really come into his own over time. I've heard him do some pretty compelling interviews and handle the red meat political stuff with just as much ease as he does the general interest topics. He's informed and comfortable with local and national issues. Plus he's entertaining and knows how to have a conversation instead of talking AT his callers and guests. I really appreciate that and find myself sticking with him longer than I do other WBT hosts, so he'd be my first choice, but I have no idea if he's available or even interested in a full-time gig so who knows. For sure, the worst choice would be another syndicated show. The whole live and local thing that WBT has always bragged about and made them unique in the market is being lost and if they keep it up I'll bet a lot of listeners will be leaving too. Maybe they just need to find out the hard way. We can get those syndicated shows anywhere.

I hate to say this (but I will). It doesn't matter what they do, WBT will never be as good as it used to be. Those days are gone!

I stopped listening to Tara long ago. She had three very annoying habits (to me, at least):

1. She would say something that amused herself and giggle like a little school girl.
2. She would run sentences together, to the point that she would not finish the first before beginning the next.
3. She repeated the 'call in' phone number FAR more than any other host on WBT. I bet she said it an average of at least every two to three minutes for the full three hours.

After a few weeks of these, I found somehting else to listen to from 3 to 6, like Sean Hannity on WBCN AM 1660.

I think she's a very good writer, columnist and investigative reporter...blows on the radio.

I agree completely with this. I believe she would be a fantastic talk show PRODUCER, but not host.

Tara was great at beating a dead horse and the giggling could drive anyone crazy.

I wish her well, just don't put her back on the air!

I would love to have Hancock back in the 3 - 6 slot, I would be able to listen to him live every day instead of getting the podcasts, and then put Pete back on from 6- 9. But what do I know?

I agree with Brian, Pamela Furr would do well on WBT. She has had broadcast experience on WVNN in Huntsville (used to listen to her, afternoons) and more recently on Rush Radio. If I recall she has also filled in at times on 'BT and does a great job!

OMG. PAM FURR IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST! I LISTENED TO HER FILLING IN THIS MORNING FOR KEITH LARSEN AND LISTENED FOR A SHORT WHILE, BUT THATS ALL I COULD TAKE. UGH!
I FORGOT JUST HOW AWFUL SHE IS. I HEARD SHE GOT UNCEREMONIOUSLY CANNED IN ALA AND THEN GOT QUICKLY CANNED AGAIN ON RUSH RADIO AND THIS TIME BROUGHT DOWN A POPULAR BROADCAST VETERAN WITH HER! NO THANKS.
