Ted Mckay

Was sad to learn of the passing of Ted Mckay on Dec. 22. I enjoyed listening to his show when I was a teen in 1967,68. His commercials for meir Ovadia's Upper Krust restaurant could make you hungry by his describing the available sandwiches, I also recall hi commercials for Klein on Vine used cars. I consider Mr. McKay to have been one of the legends of Cincinnati radio, and there are not many left. We need to enjoy the likes of Gary Burbank, Jim LaBarbara, Jim Scott, and others while they are still around, for I fear based on the current state of radio, the "personality" aspect of radio will not be with us much longer.

Well said JCR. McKay, JFPO, Rich King, Jockey Joe, Dusty, Steve Kirk. These guys were the LEGENDS. Local radio, Cincinnati in particular, had many great ones. The three you mention are the end of the line of local "personality" radio. After they move on, all that's left are board-ops reading :10 drops off index cards, from some far off city. Kinda like the Cincinnati Bell telephone operators in China.
In heaven today, they can "swing and sway with Ted McKay".

I recall listening to Ted's "Party Line" show with the annoying beep every 10 seconds or so. Here's a good article and photo of Ted:

The late 50's and 60's were WKRC's heyday with big guns Stan Matlock, Ted McKay, and Waite Hoyt's "Burger Beer Baseball Network". They had to pull some pretty good numbers in that era from "towers atop Hotel Alms".

Fess up. Where are you really from?

I agree with you. Don't see much in the way of any personality-building these days. No future legends to speak of.

On another note fess, your post would indicate that you have some history with this market. I'm a bit surprised since earlier you indicated you have come from Chicago and seem pretty put off by Cincinnati radio. But if you have been here before then you know Cincinnati radio is what it is. This is not market number 3 Chicago-quality radio any more than Kokomo is Cincinnati-quality radio.

But I have to say that while FM here is about as sterile as everywhere else, this is a darn good AM market and always has been, especially when compared to other similar markets like Columbus and especially Cleveland. We have a fairly reasonable selection of talk formats and tons of live, local programming which many even larger sized markets are starving for.

FM has become pretty inconsequential to me though as I listen to satellite radio for my music fix.

Hey Keys2. Sorry if I gave the impression of being from Chicago. I'm a long-time local. You hit the mark on "sterile" FM. I jump from AM to the CDs in the car. Cincy has always been a unique AM market, particularly in the 60's & 70's when WKRC,WLW, WSAI and WCKY went after each other in programming, news and sports. It's too bad consolidation took away the competition. The product quality has suffered. CC shoots its wad for WLW, at the expense of all its other AMs. Pre-taped (and often outdated) sports updates, Talk hosts who can't pronounce Bengals (i.e. Piecoro/BINGALS), and WLW news people reading straight out of the Enquirer. Pathetic!

FESS GOT A TUMMY ACHE

Fess got a tummy ache. Poor baby. He will not be posting today. Poor putty-tat.

i moved to cincy nearly 3 years ago from the Chicago market, and i've had a hard time adjusting. primarily an AM listener, i was really put off by the no-competition landscape here. in Chicago, when someone jumps ship for another station, it's a HUGE deal. and watching the tides change up there was always fascinating. in the 90s, you couldn't touch WLS. now they're worse than what WGN was at their lowest. don't get me wrong, Cincy has several great AM hosts. Bill Cunningham is a gem, and makes it difficult at times to keep Rush on. i also really like McConnel, Pic, and that fill-in "Sterling". but all of the morning shows here are terrible. Jim Scott basically reads PR announcements. Jerry & Craig are what several Chicago hosts used to mock (i thought they were a joke for several days when i first listened). and the 2 Angries...don't get me started. Why a man-boy-voiced know-nothing like Richard Skinner has any other job besides Til-A-Whirl operator at the county fair is beyond me. and Lance over at WSAI is textbook ADD Radio. and Burbank is a special kind of radio. "special" in the Easter Seals kind of way. I guess it's a "refined" taste. Anyway, I think some good old fashioned competition would solve a lot of the bland stuff, and only amplify the good. Thank Apple for Podcasts so I can now listen to Chicago radio while driving!

Re: Fess up. Where are you really from?

One thing you'll notice about radio in this area, is that it rarely changes. their is also a lot of duplication of AC and country formats making FM radio useless. If it wasn't for local programming on WLW, I would never need to turn my radio on. I find myself listening less and less to the radio as it is now days.

Re: Fess up. Where are you really from?

I'm glad we at least have WLW; CC could have dumped most of the local and moved Beck,Rush, and Savage there a long time ago. I don't know when McConnell, Cunningham, Burbank and Fuhrman's contacts expire, but I shudder to think that maybe they'll end up non-renewed.
______________

Re: Fess up. Where are you really from?

Unless they want to retire I think it would be foolish for CC not to renew them for syndicated talk. That's what 55KRC is for. CC has to many AM signals to program talk on and for 700 not to be local what would they do with 55KRC, Sports? 1360 would have to flip to something and I doubt it would be oldies. 1530 is being wasted in my opinion. Maybe it will go spanish someday..Who knows.

Re: Fess up. Where are you really from?

Wouldn't doubt that one of the four AMs will eventually go Spanish. Burbank probably will retire within the next few years. McConnell is undoubtedly doing the national weekend show in part to keep his options open, shouls national be the only way to go at some point.
______________
