The signal from K269GS seems to be stronger, but is still fighting KNTE. I was hearing snatches of Tejano music in KNTE dead spots as far as 290 and the Beltway. Some sort of antenna pattern change?
That's odd. A couple of days ago KNTE sounded like it was blanketing the entire market. I caught their RDS around Spring during the middle of the day.

Somebody must've raised power at Puro Tejano, maybe their transmitter has a "power raise button".
I think if anyone has a power raise button it would be liberman it sounds like every time the Astros play KNTE seems to sound stronger. J/S
Now that you mention it, the two times KNTE sounded pretty good around the greater Houston area was during an Astros game. Good observation.
Earlier today, the 101.7 frequency sounded awful. The translator and KNTE were fighting and putting on a splattering mess over each other. Maybe the translator should try and find a new channel. It's easier to overpower LPFMs than it is a full power station.

The recent tropo conditions have been enhancing KNTE (and other stations) during the evening when the Astros are playing.

The engineer's a huge Astros fan then, probably.
Online at fcc.org it says Primary station 97.9 THE BOX so it might be on a sub channel.
During my evening commute I was getting spotty reception of K269GT, fighting with KNTE and K269GS. The Vietnamese programming is the same as K254BZ 98.7, which also has KBXX HD2 as its origination.
However, close to my home in Cy-Fair I am hearing La Nueva on 101.7. Where would this be coming from? Don’t think it is KVGK-LP, as that would have provided a good signal along part of my commute. Only other thing might be a new translator in Brenham (K269GU) but that is supposed to rebroadcast KWHI, and is probably too far, anyway. KQEU, if it ever got on the air, is supposed to be in Chinese. Any ideas?
Is “old people music” the Tejano station? Odd to think of a 90’s musical phenomenon as being ancient...
The music has an "80s" sound with the heavy use of synthesizers. I can't imagine that being very appealing to young Hispanics. I'm going to go on a limb here and say that a lot of the remaining Tejanos are on their way into retirement age.
Weird to think that it's been over 16 years since KQQK went off the air. But even before it's death, it's popularity had worn off thanks to the shiny new "Estereo Latino" that had upgraded from 93.3 to 102.9. No viable Tejano station has been on the air in Houston to indoctrinate new young listeners. Univision's KRTX-AM and the leased KGBC station were/will never be viable replacements for what KQQK once was. Placing a music format on an AM station is a great recipe for failure (especially if the AM station is a rimshot like KQUE and KGBC).
Tejano and conjunto music goes back, in its current form, to the 50's and 60's. It started to fade in the late 90's, with the Selena phenomenon being a "last hurrah" rather than the start of something.
Having lived most of my life in various places in Texas, I’m aware of that...but I don’t recall hearing the term “Tejano” prior to the late 1980’s, even from Hispanic friends and colleagues. In a way it would seem to be an invented term, much like “Hispanic” was a creation of early 1970’s demographers. And I don’t think Puro Tejano 101.7 is playing music from the 50’s and 60’s, but if someone is more familiar with the genre, please correct me...
It is KBXX-HD2. The HD2 is about 45 seconds behind K269GT.
This is sort of like "when did Top 40 become CHR?". Conjunto music started being called Tejano sometime in the 70's, and by 1980 the term had become broadly used so that the first Tejano Music Awards show became a reality.
There is a long history, going back to the music of the Mexican Revolution and the gradual differentiation between the norteña sound of NE México and the Texas sound of Conjunto Tejano, so putting dates more precise than decades on the evolution of the style is difficult and subject to opinion.
I don't believe any of the translators in Houston are being fed by the HD signal, they are being fed directly. When maintenance was going on at Senior Road last weekend, and many of the HD carriers were off, every single translator was on air.
