Tell me about 1690 AM

Or is that not the number?

Anyway it's waaaayyy down the dial. They seem to play a strange, varied, sometimes eclectic but entertaining mix of music. But how can you pay the bills playing two commercials an hour?

1690 AM, the best variety of today's, yesterday's, the other day's and the 17th century's music. Call in when you hear the sound of the birds and win $1.69.

It is all over the musical map. I 've heard Artie Shaw, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra and Chuck Berry all in the same 1/2 hour! It's a really nice change of pace. While a great format, it's only for aficionados. The general public wouldn't get it. Still, I am glad it exists.

The guy who owns 1690 WLMB owns 1160 WCFO.

Sounds like I should introduce myself to Mr. Weber.

Am I correct in thinking their station is in Avondale Estates? And their tower near where the Softball CC used to be?

City of license is Avondale Estates. The tower is somewhere in the Cheshire Bridge radio tower gulch off of I-85 (not sure which one it is or with whom they might share a tower).

Question for the board: Does anyone have a map as to who all is in that area? 920, 790, 970, and 1190 are also all in that area as well but none appear to share a tower with WMLB. There's one multitower array which I assume is 790's.

The tower array and studio in Avondale Estates (actually Scottdale) across from the old Softball CC off of N. Decatur is WATB, 1420. If you're a radio geek you might remember them as WAVO (for AVOndale Estates). Studio was also formerly home to WAVO's FM side, WAVQ, at 94.9.

You're correct. The WMLB/1690 tower is across the street from the others. It's on the same side of Cheshire Bridge as the original WPBA-TV tower on Bismarck Road.

Before building its Cheshire Bridge tower, 1690 diplexed from one of the WATB sticks.

If I remember correctly, as you travel on Cheshire Bridge from I-85 the 4 tower field on your left just after Southern Nights is 790, The next tower (set further back is 970, the next tower (taller and closer to Cheshire Bridge) is 920 and then on the right is the 1690 tower. The even taller tower on the right, closer to I-85, is WPBA's aux tower.

Thanks for the info. No, I'm no radio geek. I am geeky about other things. I just remember laying in bed at night back when I was a kid in the late 60's with my little... (no that's not where I'm going with this) AM radio and picking up radio stations across the country. Now...in my early 50's I'm still laying in bed at night with my little...wife next to me... but still with an AM radio trying to find a "clear channel" on which we can pick up George Noori since our local "clear channel" doesn't pick him up ITP in DeKalb County . So scanning down the dial one night I find 1690.

Incidentally, I pick up WHAS in Kentucky (for Coast To Coast with GN) better than I pick up GST (go figure) ITP.

About the only thing on AM in the wee hours is George Noori and ESPN Sports.

And the things I like fade in and out...

Ralph Crazack on KMOX
Steve and Johnny on WGN
News people like WBBM and their counterpart in NYc.

Shoot... even the evangelist preachers from Del Rio, Texas are gone!

What's this world coming to?

Is the 790 array the same as they used when it was QXI? and is that cool old...(now weed ridden) art deco building still the xmtr building? Did the studio ever originate there?

Does Zesto still exist?

and does the Claremont Lounge still have snakes on the floor?

Jeff Laurence..former host
Sat Night All Request Dance Party
WSB-FM (mid 90's)

Are you sure those are towers? I thought they were really tall poles. (Inside joke for those who know what happens on Cheshire Bridge Rd.)

Blondie still has her unique way of bending beer cans at the Claremont. Manueal's is still extant, too... great place to find the 790 mavens after hours.
