Temu Ads

Ads in general on this board are way out of control now. I’ve noticed a change today. Seeing multiple ads and pop-ups all over the place. I understand you all have to make money, but this is ridiculous now. Ads take up more screen space than content.
Some of the ads cover up functional sections of the site, including Mark Messages Read and the Reply box, in Firefox on Android. I don't have a problem with ads, so long as they don't disturb my use of a site. If/when they do, I activate an ad blocker.

For those ordering from Temu, what’s been your experience?

I order stuff from them a few times a year. It's worth waiting for them to ship from overseas to pay so relatively little.

I spent five days in the hospital after surgery last month, and I brought both my phone and my tablet with me, which also meant that I brought the charger I bought from Temu as well. It has a conventional USB plug on one end (which then plugs into an AC adapter with a USB output) and the other end has three different charger plugs, two of which fit the aforementioned devices. The nursing staff was very impressed by it and I am probably lucky no one made off with it during my stay.

I also bought a foldable solar panel array for a friend's birthday last year which connects to his laptop via USB and lets him charge whenever he can find sunlight. He was delighted at the choice of gifts.

I would suggest that when you experience that, you PM Lance about it. I'm sure he doesn't want that happening.

I’m sure he’s aware of everything happening here.

By the way, I’ve never even heard of Temu. So I’ve definitely never been to their website. But when I clicked on this thread, all kinds of Temu ads came up. With all due respect to everyone who works hard on this board, this place has become an ad ghetto.

I don't think anyone can predict what any particular ad pop-up is going to do for everyone on a site.

I know what they do on my Windows-based PC running Firefox. I do not know what would be different if I used Chrome or Edge. I do know that there is a slight difference on my Android-based tablet running Firefox, and a huge difference in how those ads display on my Android smartphone with Firefox. But again, I don't know how Chrome would display those ads on my Android devices.

And I have no idea whatsoever how they would display on an iPhone or a Mac.

So while I am sure he knows about his own devices -- just as I do about mine -- he may not be aware of the issues Keith mentioned, because Keith may have a combination of devices/OS/applications that contributes to the problem ... and that is why I made my suggestion.

Why I have a ad-blocker and pop-up block engaged most of the time. I turned them off for a moment and heard the processor fly into high speed and 2 alerts from the PC's virus proggy. Back on it went. Temu is a fraud as they self-installed on my mobile and was like pulling teeth to remove it.

I think the new peeps in charge upped them a lot. What is needed here is like a donation level to avoid the ads - would be a nice way to support the site without 2,543,990.4 ads and plop-ups.

^^^^^^ Why I generally don't use shopping apps on my phone.

My orders at Temu are placed from my PC via their website and I have had zero "self-installations". I think this is evidence that phones have become so ubiquitous for all things online that it becomes easy to sneak an app onto same.

Not happening here.

This issue is only with my Samsung phone, on which I run Firefox. I also have Google Chrome installed on it, and it isn't quite as bad. I have other reasons to despise Chrome, though, and will not use it unless absolutely necessary (some telehealth software mandates it).

It's not an issue with Firefox on any of my Linux desktop machines, but I have AdBlock software installed on all of them. I don't own any Windows or MacOS boxes anymore.

I‘m not going to spend money on an ad blocker, especially one for every device I use. If something has too many intrusive ads blocking the content, then I’m gone.

Nothing has changed with the ads. I haven't been able to get into the templating system that controls that yet due to a server bug that hasn't been resolved yet.

I have been using Duck Duck Go on my phone to get on the Internet. It's not perfect but it seems to stop a lot pop-ups and cookies. The search function of course has paid placement and the results are similar to Bing. When I switched from Chrome there was an immediate reduction in ads. Duck Duck Go is free.

AdBlock Plus is free and you can use it on mobile, laptop, etc.
Same with uBlock Origin. I've seen blockers out there that charge, but always go with the freebies since they get the job done. I don't view sites on a mobile since I just have a flip phone (Maybe 11 on the planet).

Think after the server bug is squished, the ads can be tweaked. I do miss the days of the old-school static gif ads.

I have a problem with something called "Google vignette" It's not always something where I can click on the X in the upper right corner. And when I reload it doesn't tell me what I was going to, unlike when I can click on the X. So if I forgot where I was trying to go, then I don't go there.

According to the help section for Google AdSense customers (the businesses placing the ads), Google Vignettes are "full-screen ads that appear between page loads and can be skipped by users at any time."

It further says that "Vignettes are displayed when the user leaves a page or comes back to it, rather than when they arrive on one, so the user doesn’t have to wait for them to load." That may explain why it doesn't reload when you try that.

To be honest, I never heard of this before now. I'm guessing my ad blocker also blocks this "feature" along with the rest of AdSense. I can find no help page to tell users how to prevent it. Typical.

Google is all about monetisation. When I had a forum up eons ago I had Adsense, but at the time I only had 2 simple banner ads on top and bottom of my board - nothing else. Got like $25 a month. Now you barely get a buck 3.98 or so. Now some forums are really bad on the ads, even a lot worse then you see here. Sadly the internet ad market crashed and burned long ago.

About a year ago another board I used to be on put a warning that users would be banned if ad-blockers were detected. This was an automotive board. The strict stance on ad-blockers drove users away and the place started getting stagnated. They ended up selling the thing of a company that snaps up forums, Vertical Scope or something.

One suggestion for here is maybe try like a "Pub Room" or something where those who donate like $50 or more a year get access to. Got a feeling many here would join that to keep this place running and help reduce the ads too.

I don't pay but another site I go to lets premium users discuss politics.
