Tennessean: The PPMs Are Coming! The PPMs Are Coming!

One other point is that the meter requires a minimum of 5 minutes of audio in a quarter hour to register. So the brief fly-by at a stop light shouldn't register. Unless it's a long light.

Does this also kill the three-minute song? After all, we must find a way to stop premature button-pushing on the car presets...

No but what I hear is that stations have dropped the liner or sweeper between the songs, so it's six minutes of uninterrupted music.

I predict we'll see a (don't laugh) bump up for WPLN FM. Their more high brow audience doesn't have time to fill out diaries and we often see the public stations, far calmer and more mature than say, Phil Valentine's rants, attract a large and loyal audience...

The public radio stations in some of the PPM-metered markets (Washington and Philadelphia, to name a couple) are doing so well with PPM, it's not even funny. (So I am not laughing. ;D )

By the way, last time I was in Nashville, the cab driver in the taxi I was in had the local public radio station on. So I suppose instances like that will be picked up by a PPM meter. But what if you bring your own Walkman with you and choose your own station to combat what's playing in the cab? Will two stations get credit in the PPM?

Of course you know SONIC pipes in there own SONIC network with Jocks and all and hi's and how are you's to stores and such.. I know Wal-Mart does that and tries to pump the loyalty of the overnight stockers and end-cap workers by saying shout outs to store numbers and employees..

Wally-World Radio
Radio Tar-zjay
Super Sonic Hit Blaster Radio
Kro-zjay Everyday Radio
etc...etc...

I was at a Shoney's there years ago and I believe Jack-FM was playing over the registers...

If you are listening to a stream or your HD Zune (doesn anyone actually have one of these) with headphones Arbitron can provide a special piece that attaches to allow for it to be metered. In the case of the cab ride if you were wearing the pimped out headphones only that would get credit. Internet streams will only get credit (applied to parent signal) if the simulcast is 100% of what is going out over the air.

In a PPM world is has changed from Time Spent Listening to more a Time Exposed. The truth is we are exposed, without awareness, all day long to media and we don't register that we are. This takes all that in. While it may not be showing that I 'heard' anything it is still showing how much exposure that the brand has.

That's why a lot of stations, if not most, are encoding their internet streams as well. I know WPLN has that running, my station is one of probably only a few in the market that doesn't.

Unofficial PPM - - - I 106 is blasting daily at neighborhood pool this summer. Seems to be the station of choice this summer?

Nock

Not really a form of judging ratings, but have you checked the facebook fan pages? WRVW (19,106) and Magic 98.5 (7,784) are pulling some incredible numbers. The party is decent at 2,920; i106 (840) and RQQ (393), not so much. 94.7 (3,865) is beating both the Wolf (1,875) and KDF (2,949). A lot of that really depends on the demographic really, but worth checking out if nothing better to do.

Oh yeah, Mix is at 4,239.

The WRVW is from having all of Clear Channel staff and there families rooting for that station. That's why they have 14,000 +.

It's so easy to skew Facebook (or any Internet) numbers, it's silly. That's why, when thousands signed on to the Save Live 100.5 fan page in Birmingham earlier this year, Citadel ignored the numbers and flipped the station to talk anyway. The Arbs are all that matters.

Getting allowed into Romers FB page is a little easier than a nite in Alcatraz, but overall probably more painful.
