SE Electronics will allow you up to 7 days to test-drive their mics...they have a nice variety of tube mics and condensers...all pretty affordable too. I tried out one of their mics, loved it, but didn't have the cash to back up my lust at the time. Still considering ordering it later this year ( last minute tax write-off! ), but you can contact them, tell them what you want to try, and they'll put a hold on the funds on your credit card and ship it to you...

I've seen ads in EQ and other mags for B&H Music in Manhattan (9th ave at 34th st). They appear to have a nice room with a host of mics and mic pre's in a semi-soundproof room where you can test-drive a host of mics...from cheap to not-even-close-to-affordable...

Check 'em out. J&R Music World down in lower Manhattan sells tons of gear too, but I don't know what their mic-test situation is like...

Hope that helps...
